Buckzip
Didn't we already sell out once to gain publicity by hiring a "name" coach? How did that work out? We've hired a couple of names. Faust was one and Brookhart was sort of a name at the time. Faust produced a 7-3-1 record that still stands as the best year in the D-1A era. Faust knew what to do...the University had no idea what to do and the ship sank. Brookhart won a MAC Championship.Well Said, GP1.The saddest part of this is that in all of our years in D1, our best record is 7-3-1.At many other schools, that record gets you fired. Zip Watcher
I think that was '93, wasn't it? I remember being a student at UConn then, and seeing Akron in the "Others" section of the AP poll.
Blue & Gold
I think that was '93, wasn't it? I remember being a student at UConn then, and seeing Akron in the "Others" section of the AP poll.Oooh!!! That's just before I started following Akron closely. I would have LOVED to have seen that!I began following Akron closely during the final year of the Faust era, when both they and Ohio were 0-10 (0-fer the season) and played each other the final game of the year. The Zips won -IIRC- behind a stellar performance by QB Brian Maggarell (sp?).I really became excited about Akron football when Lee Owens took over and promised to recruit the best local talent. His first year he landed Julius Lancaster (SS - McKinley), almost landed Kinta Mitchell (LB - McKinley) and landed stud high school QB Willie Spencer (Massillon), (that was super-stud Antoine Winfield's senior year). So I was really optimistic about the future of Akron football.

Buckzip...you are right....it is sad that it's the best record in a 1987-2011 time frame. But, how much would we love to have that record right now?Zipwatcher..you are only one year off......it was 1992.

g-mann17
BTW who ever threw up the picture of Leach. I believe that we could have had him if we had just waited until January of that year to hire our head coach. The irony of all this, if Ianello finds a way to win 5 games this year many of us will be excited about next year (especially since we know we are young, and those wins will come near the end of the year showcasing "vast improvement").Wins heal all wounds. I believe that we could have had him if we had just waited until January of that year to hire our head coach.I was listening to Chris Childers on Rivals Radio this morning and he made the comment that he looks for Leach to take over at FAU next year. Maybe it's not too late. He is a polarizing character, but he would create a lot of excitement and the offense would be fun to watch.I know. I'm dreaming. zen
He brings in nearly nightly coverage on the Cleveland and Columbus TV news stations and most newspapers in the state of Ohio. This part is brilliant. Particularly in Columbus, where a lot of the faithful would love to see him back on his feet. However, I don't know that we care too much about garnering supporters in Columbus. I don't see them driving up 71 on those saturdays when we have a home game and they don't. Attention from the Cleveland media? That's something different all together. Has interesting potential. He brings in national sports attention. Almost all of it negative. But I'm not so sure that negative attention is worse than no attenion. Do you think he could step in and turn them around in year one? The Lobos are a dumpster fire. If I was a fan of that program, I would be on my knees nightly praying for Leach come to town. I am guessing there is probably a pretty sizable Mormon population in NM as well, which would be another possible draw. I would love to see him back on the sidelines. Knowing the area a little, I don't know that there are a lot of Mormons in ABQ. I do know that Mike Leach would play VERY WELL there. That area of the country is a great place to watch football. Lots of local rivalries.

Leach would not come to this part of the country unless a real program wnated him. No folks not Akron. He is oriented to Florida or the Southwest. UNM. Locksley is gone. I watched his weekly radio show from a restaurant in ABQ. Nobody was interested. Kinda like....

skip-zip
can't afford tresselIn more ways than one! But, if he is allowed to coach in the NCAA again, you know that some school out there, with absolutely no regard for how they get things done, will give him a shot. I really thought it was funny yesterday when OSWho announced more player suspensions (including more time for other violations from 2 of the SAME GUYS involved in Tattoo Gate) that they convenientlly place blamed on Tressel. If anyone can damage Tressel right out of any future employment, it's those guys in his old athletic dept., who will likely slam him every chance they get in an attempt to save their own hides.
