Ham
We had a Temple fan comment about having 40 or 50 red shirts over that last few years. I think that is very significant. We are bringing in HS kids and putting them up against men. Many of these kids would have been helped with a year to mature both physically and mentally. Right after a nice article about 2 area freshmen who will red shirt this year, I noticed that Cody Grice made a tackle against Temple. Was that special teams or LB? We need to get to the point where we can hold back half of our recruiting classes. I think this will particularlly help both off and def line play. You can ask any Temple fan. Five years ago they were doing exactly what we are doing, playing a lot of young guys. Why? Because they are the ones that buy the coaches system, you develop them for 3 years and you have a core of Seniors and Juniors that can play the game and then you start red shirting guys so they get the extra development year. Unfortunately we are what we are. Young and inexperienced.
ZachTheZip
A majority of the freshmen were redshirted last year, and the same is true this year.
zipdiehard
Agreed. We have to start somewhere. We are all anxious, but let's face it that rebuilding a lower tier program does not generally happen overnight. Yes, there are exceptions, but in general it takes several years. Constant turnover of coaches does not help. I would love for us to be at the point where we could redshirt numerous players.
Buckzip
Guys wear the same number offense and defense. Cody Grice probably shares a number with the defensive guy that made the tackle.

I believe our kicker for kickoffs, Kevin Ivasku, wears #36 and he did in fact make a tackle on one of the kickoffs. That's probably the confusion. My friend said, "Whoa!" when the Temple KR ran him over, but to save face I added, "Yeah, but that was the kicker."
Zipsrifle
How does RI compare to JD in terms of red shirting? It seems like RI is red shirting more talented players that would typically see the field with JD. Any thoughts??
Captain Kangaroo
How does RI compare to JD in terms of red shirting? It seems like RI is red shirting more talented players that would typically see the field with JD. Any thoughts??Nobody knows. If you are an RI fan, you are in awe of the talent we're redshirting. If you are an RI hater, the redshirts are 90lb weaklings that we can only hope develop into servicable players. But the reality is -- no one knows. My gut feeling is -- if the kids presently being redshirted were D1 ready, they'd be on the field.Owens was more of a believer in redshirting than JD. He did a good job of getting 5th year seniors on the field.
