zipstudent12
I am a student at the university, and I am doing a speech on student attendance at athletic events. I was wondering what you thought about the following questions. Do you think that student attendance is low? What do you think is the cause of low student attendance? Does student attendance effect your attendance? Please feel free to tell me any of your thoughts or feelings about this topic. Thank you for your time in advance! tbozeglav
Are you speaking in a general sense encompassing all sports or do you have a specific sport in mind? That answer could greatly change the information we provide you. Also, i know there are other students like myself on this board as well that could give you another angle on the topic. Dr Z
I don't blame any student for not going to Infocision stadium the past two years. BUT, if the game was during the day and the stadium was on campus and I was getting in free, I would probably still go. It will be hard to get students back now that football has creative such a miserable losing atmosphere. As for basketball, I think student attendance is extremely low. Most of last season, I could count them myself and never get to fifty. We need to make the JAR a hard place for opponents to hear. Old dudes in the reserve seats don't cut it, we need student support. The set up in the JAR is not conducive to a normal/big student section, so UA does nothing to change it. Students need to make it a problem.

I won't start an argument on why that is, but there's plenty of students at each basketball game. youre both right. The small, divided student sections are not conducive to a strong student contingent. Compare the JAR to the hill over at the soccer stadium. There's your answer RIGHT there. I agree there are plenty of students at the basketball games. It looks like so few because of how small the two sections are. There are countless solutions, but theyre not for this thread. Regarding this thread: If none of my friends are going to the game, as a student I find it increasingly difficult to WANT to go to the game. I support my teams, yes. Always have and always will in whatever capacity I can. However, attending the game is still a social event in the form of athletic entertainment, thus I value attending the game and supporting the team IN ADDITION to being there to hang out with my friends. If you remove the latter of the two elements, it nearly halves the personal value of attendance in my opinion. That being said, the performance on the field/court/pitch is a 3rd element to my attendance, personally. I am a huge football fanatic and follow it as closely as I can, but even I won't go to one of our football games because the ESPN scorecenter notifications on my phone are depressing enough. Conversely, I will do everything I can to be at a soccer or basketball match simply because 1) the sport is entertaining, and 2) I have a good chance at viewing a winning game for my team and taking part in the celebration that comes with it. I know this sounds like the definition for a front runner, but trust me, I am not. =========== thats my $0.02 on the whole thing. Not all students see it the same way. I consider myself a member of a minority group within the student population. Most students, to my knowledge fall into one of two groups: 1) they just couldnt be bothered one bit about athletics even if they are winning because they support "bigger and better schools", or 2) only go because the team is winning and they get to hang out with their friends without ever being bothered about the game at hand. zipstudent12
Thank you all for your replies it is extremely helpful to see it from a lot of different view points. I am asking about all sports in general not jsut the "main" sports (football, basketball, and soccer). I would really like to hear from non-student fans and see if student attendance has ever effected their attendance (ex. make you leave early/ make you not want to come at all).
