Terry pluto says our new coach should be Paul Winters.

So the NCAA indeed holds Tressel's college future in its hands. You can be sure they will squeeze him tightly for a while before letting go. That won't happen in 2012. In fact, Akron officials and Tressel have both said so.

But the Zips desperately need an impact hire to revive their football program. They have perhaps the Mid-American Conference's premier facilities, and the league's worst team. It's not just the 2-22 record in the last two seasons, or the 5-31 mark since moving into beautiful InfoCiscion Stadium in 2009. The Zips have been awful since 2005, the year they were the surprise winners of the MAC and had a 7-6 overall record.

But in his last four seasons, Winters is 31-13. It's remarkable and a testimony to his ability to find players who others have missed and to do more with less.

He obviously knows Akron and knows the MAC, but was never there when the campus looks as it does today with the new stadium and other buildings. He is exactly the type of coach the Zips need to energize the fan base, and he's a guy with recruiting roots in the area. He also is a man with head-coaching experience, something the Zips have ignored with their last few coaches.

As soon as Winters' season at Wayne State is over, he deserves more than an interview -- he should be the top candidate for the job.

Good idea. Let Cleveland media determine what the Zips need.

They did such a grand job with Charlie Frye.

By all means, Paul Winters has earned a shot at being a candidate.

I would love to hear his vision of Akron football future.

Me, I am greedy. I want Akron football and the rest of the sports

to make the jump to a much better conference.

It is difficult to accept the idea that Terry Pluto gives a damn about Akron.

After all, he bailed.

+1.

He's a big reason a generation of Akronites don't take the Zips seriously. His melancholy, backhanded-complimentary slant when he'd write about UA was a disgrace.

However, having said that, I think Paul Winters would be a very good candidate.

He said the same thing before the JD hiring. He said the same thing before the Rob hiring. Shocking he would pick the "little engine that could"!?!?

He could care less about Akron football when he wrote for the AKRON Beacon Journal. He wrote 5 times as many articles about Mount Union.

I could care less what he says. Even if Paul is the correct man for the job, Terry can go take a long walk off a...

The only reason he's even mentioning anything about our coaching search is that he wants to be able to write more stories and turn another generation of local sports fans into apathetic fools who believe that we're a D-II school competing with Ursuline College and John Carrol. And it's easier for him to do that if he doesn't have to learn anything about a new coach, since he has old stories from the Lee Owens days that he can just fall back on if Winters becomes our coach.

He doesn't -- but he's so much better than we are at diagnosing what's wrong with Akron: That it wants to escape Cleveland's shadow.
