Hilltopper
Todd Porter wrote an interesting piece on Campbell yesterday. Matt Campbell is sitting in a pretty good spot right now for a 32-year-old assistant football coach at the University of Toledo. The former Perry High School football standout has been on the rise since taking over as Toledo’s offensive coordinator three years ago. When head coach Tim Beckman left to take the Illinois head coaching job, Toledo athletic director Mike O’Brien named Campbell the Rockets’ interim head coach. Campbell has a real shot of removing the interim label from the title and taking over the program for the Rockets. If Toledo does not make him a head coach, there could be another school in the Mid-American Conference taking a look at him, namely Akron. However, giving Campbell the chance to earn the head coaching position probably insulates the Rockets from losing Campbell to another MAC school. If Toledo shows well on the bowl game, look for O’Brien to give Campbell a crack at being the head coach. O’Brien said the school will conduct a national search. “The prudent thing to do for the University of Toledo is to see the pool of candidates that is out there,” O’Brien said. “Any internal candidates that have interest — Matt Campbell or whomever — we will certainly look at, but we’re going to see what candidates might be out there.” And one more time for good measure; TRESSEL NOT COACHING Emails and messages started again this week when national publications tried to link Jim Tressel to the UCLA head coaching position. I have said this before and will say it again, Tressel ... will ... not ... coach ... college ... football ... next ... year. He likely will not return to major college football, and possibly coaching. Tressel has said he is at peace with where he is, and he’s comfortable passing judgment on his time at Ohio State. I think he believes there is a higher calling for him at this point, and he’s trying to figure out what that is, or how most to make an impact. Is Tressel going to grow a beard and become Football Cheating Jesus? I was excited when his name came up relative to the UA job, but still think he was not just a little dirty in his coaching stops. The lionizing of the guy makes me a wee bit nauseated.

Doug Snyder
Official Toledo names Campbell head coach. Good for him. I think he will be a great HC and this is a better situation than starting at Akron. Probability for success is much higher. Would not have been disappointed if he had ended up here. Dave in Green
I suspect that the possibility of losing Campbell to UA may have helped cut short the "national search" that Toledo announced just 2 days ago they were going to conduct. Washington Post Link I think it also is a result of Beckman's original plans to take Campbell and much of the remaining Toledo staff to Illinois. According to many reports, a number of those guys would rather stay with Campbell at UT. It could get interesting between the two.
johnnyzip84
Per football scoop, Matt signed a 5 year deal at $360,000 per (I assume for year 1?)
