gozips19
Someone put a lid on the baskets so far. Also no Harney but not i pad as far as I can tell. Deyi gets the start at point. Nik has already put up two three's and was way short on both.
akronzips71
They could not even get it to go in during the shootaround practice. I KNEW it was going to be a problem.
gozips19
couple of things so far. they have no answer for Zeke down low Gilliam has lost his confidence the refs are a bit touchy as kd has been hit with a t and 3 fouls about 40ft away from the ball on both teams Walsh is playing well. Both him and Zeke are keeping Akron in this game. the depth should ware this team out unless A&T stays hot from outside. a hot team from deep can do wonders for your legs. akronzips71
That was some play by Tree. He is going to terrorize the MAC for four years. With some more experience there won't be an answer for him in this conference.
Quickzips
I have no idea how we scored 40 in that half with the way the lids were on the basket for most of that half. Zeke's been hitting his FT's and playing tough defense, but he looks kind of tenative again on the offensive end. Diggs has had a big half in the role of facilitator. Walsh has found his shot, and continues to put in some impressive performances on the boards for a guard. Zips have given up WAY too many wide open 3's off of inbound plays. When I say wide open I mean WIIIIIIIDDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEE open. KD is not going to be happy about that. Just doesn' seem like the effort has been there for most of the game so far. Not sure if we are feeling the affects of 4 games in 7 days or if we are just taking this team too lightly.

Tree already has 7 boards in about 11 mins Zeke picked up 2 dumb fouls. is on the bench now.
gozips19
what an ugly hard fought blowout!?! we'll hear this a lot over the next year and a half. Akron just had the better bigs and wore A&T down. Nice win
akzipper
Akron REALLY needs to cut down on turnovers and giving the other teams open 3's. We could have beat A&T and YSU by 40 points had we covered the perimeter. On a side note. It's really disappointing seeing Can't, Ohio, and Buffalo have such better records. We are the best team in the MAC, but because we didn't stack our schedule with cupcakes we're stuck in the middle.
akronzips71
We have to play better against good teams. Beating these guys is nothing but a warmup.

I saw that Abreu didn't play...did he already have his knee surgery? Nice win for the Zips! We play the other team from Greensboro, North Carolina tomorrow (UNC Greensboro) at the Greensboro Coliseum (where the ACC tournament is played) on ESPN3. After that it's VCU-Akron time! Dave in Green
Akron REALLY needs to cut down on turnovers ..... Check the box score: 19 assists to 9 turnovers -- better than a 2:1 assist-to turnover-ratio. And all accomplished without a true point guard. Pretty darned impressive. The Zips were definitely thin with Rico and Harney sitting, and Egner also at the end of the bench for some reason and not getting any PT. So they were down to an 8-player rotation. NCA&T, on the other hand, rotated players in and out continuously, with 10 players getting more than 16 minutes. So this was one game where the Zips did not have a depth advantage. Yet they still wore down their opponents. NCA&T players were all over the Zips, and tempers got a little heated at times. The refs were pretty liberal with their whistles, so we had to sit through 50 free throws. This is the kind of game and refs where Zeke has been prone to getting into foul trouble. But he played under control, only got 3 fouls and continued his run of good stats -- 20 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks. With the Seb snagging 11 rebounds and Tree 9, the Big Three combined for 28 boards. Walsh had a great game, scoring 15 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block and 1 assist in 34 minutes. Q played under control and dished out 7 assists against just 1 turnover. They still have a lot of work to do. And now the schedule starts getting tough. Dave in Green
Abreu had his knee surgery yesterday. He was walking around with only the slightest of limps. Odds are against him playing against VCU. It all depends on whether his knee heals quicker than average. My best guess is that he will at least try to put in a brief appearance on the floor to try to inspire his teammates.
Districtballer
Sorry saw that Abreu had his surgery yesterday and will try to make a go of it for our game. Happy to see we'll get to test ourselves against your full squad. You guys have certainly beat your opponents convincingly and it should be a very tough game for us especially with Abreu back and having had his surgery. Will be interesting to see how we stack up to the talent and athleticism up in Akron.
Hilltopper
I saw that Abreu didn't play...did he already have his knee surgery? Abreu looked pretty good walking around for a guy who had knee surgery yesterday. During the post game show KD said he didn't expect Rico back for the VCU game. I hope he's wrong. Akron REALLY needs to cut down on turnovers We did a much better job on turnovers tonite, only committing 9 and forcing 19. Quincy only had one turnover and 7 assists for his best performance at the point to date.

Based on what you said, with 10 days to recover and his current condition, KD is probably just sand-bagging. I expect Abreu will be on the floor or at least get in the game to see how he feels. It seems like from what I read that he's determined to play in the VCU game. I hope he gets his wish. He seems like a very good point guard and it will be great prep for our conference season to go against a guy of his caliber.

The only thing I can figure is that KD felt we might need him to beat YSU? I doubt that, but what else could it be? Anyway, we are a different team without Alex. With Alex, we can be awfully good. Without Alex, meh. Frankly, w/o AA we can be just awful. Even if AA is good to go for VCU, he's not going to be his usual self. Which is disappointing for everyone. I think you're selling your squad a little short. Without AA you just beat NC A&T by 27 points and only had 9 turnovers. Your squad is much better than you think. I expect that it also had something to do with Alex's mom being in town the last week or two. As for Egner, French stated on air that he was all kinds of sick. Tried to take warmups but just couldn't go. This team has only played at full strength in two out of 12 contests. Quite frankly, we've been spoiled the last few years in terms of not being hit with the injuries/suspensions too badly (save for Brett McKnight). Seems as if some of that is coming back to bite us this year. Let's hope everyone can get healthy and on the straight and narrow soon. johnnyzip84
Not much to add other than what's been already said. But I'm wondering what was up with Egner tonight. He sat on the edge of the bench the whole night (as already mentioned) and worse yet, didn't participate in any huddles during timeouts. The irony is that he was featured on the scorecard handout tonight. Edit: Thanks Qz for the explanation!
Quickzips
One of the more interesting statistical tid-bits from tonight: Tree - FT% for the season: .412 - FT's tonight: 2/2 Nik - FT% for the season: .542 - FT's tonight: 4/4 Zeke - FT% for the season: .659 - FT's tonight 10/13 Walsh - FT% for the season: .765 - FT's tonight 1/2 Chauncey - FT% for the season: 1.000 - FT's tonight 0/2 Diggs - FT% for the season: .903 - FT's tonight 0/1 Our three best FT shooters combined to go 1/5 from the line (3/7 if you add in Nitro who has struggled this year, but is historically a much better FT shooter), while 3 of our worst FT shooters combined to go 16/18.
