ZipRoo
After reading Marla's article today on Bowden's aggressive recruiting efforts, I'm sure every single Zips fan was, once again, scratching their head, wracking their brain, trying to figure out how Tom Wistrcill arrived at his forever-infamous decision to hire a "so-called recruiting expert" from ND as a first-time head coach. The man left UA in shambles and embarrassed the school every Saturday for two years, alienating fans, players, co-workers. I've YET to see what attracted Tommy Boy to that guy....seriously, TW, fess up and tell us: WHY did you, in your wildest dreams, believe Ianello was the "best choice" to turn around the Zips program?? The damage you and RI did will take years to undo. On the one simple point that was allegedly a "strength" of Ianello, he failed utterly and completely by ignoring the hotbed of high school talent in the surrounding five-county area. What was his justification for that? What was his vision, his "plan" ? It needs to be said once again, TW: You sabotaged your own school and football program, because average, everyday fans were BEGGING you to contact and hire Terry Bowden TWO YEARS AGO--you know, when you had Irish Tunnel Vision. Imagine where UA would be TODAY if that one intelligent move had been made back then.

Imagine where UA would be TODAY if that one intelligent move had been made back then. Listen, I was highly skeptical of the hire at the time. As I said in posts before, I felt that there was most certainly room to drop from JD, but after a 3 win season, writing was on the wall. Unfortunately, reward requires risk (unless you hit rock bottom then there is no risk, but we didn't hit rock bottom under Brookhart, we did under Ianello). But.... we have to be honest in hindsight. At the time, TW was hoping he plucked a future gem from the rough before anyone else was had the wisdom to recognize it. I remember that was the mood and perspective of a lot of fans too. We were hoping that TW had the wisdom to find a future winner whose time had come to take the reigns of a program before he was taken by someone else and proven a winner there. It seemed like a gamble, because obviously he had not proven himself as head hancho, or even really as coordinator with a master plan. But still, I think the writing between the lines was supposed to be "Hay, someone is going to give him his shot and he could be proven a winner, and at that point, we will have lost out on our shot to get him, so let's take a chance". It was a learning experience, and you can see the philosophy has changed exactly the opposite this time around
Zip_ME87
Zen, I believe you meant JD as in JD Brookhart. As far as TW's mistake in hiring RI, I think it's time to put it behind us. What good does it do to keep bringing it up on this forum? If TW makes another significant mistake (hopefully not), then all of these things could be used to move in a different direction. But, at this time, things seem to be going well for the Zips. As the old adage goes, Don't Worry...Be Happy.

I also agree with your point. Does this repeated sentiment really need a brand new thread?

Imagine where UA would be TODAY if that one intelligent move had been made back then. Ianello ignored NE Ohio because he had no familiarity with it. Sure, he touched base a little when he was with Notre Dame, but this was not his "region of expertise" and he obviously wasn't very good at going outside of his comfort zone. All you have to do is look where Ianello was recruiting and it was mostly all in areas that he recruited at his previous stops. He had no chance to succeed at Akron in the areas that he was focusing his efforts. Bowden's approach seems right on.
ZipRoo
Lzip on TW: "^^ If he has a degree in marketing, he sure doesnt apply it. I know he contacted outside marketing companies for ideas for a few games last season." Pot, meet kettle. Yeah, I've got some wicked "agenda," the same one you apparently have. Those who don't recognize and examine mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. Maybe you could brush up on those lessons at UA between your own snarky remarks. So, so sorry if my expert analysis and obvious follow-up question to Marla's excellent articles went over your head. Geesh. Tool.

Does this repeated sentiment really need a brand new thread? The Wistercil piñata has been whacked enough. By hook or by crook, we have a great new head football coach. I agree with ME87...enjoy it. If he steps on another land mine, have at him. But for now, enjoy the good stuff. Now that football optimism abounds, good stuff is officially everywhere.
