ZachTheZip
C-USA, the MWC, and the Sun Belt have all back-filled their losses and become weaker. I think they've all fallen behind the MAC at this point. The MAC is now sitting in 7th behind the six former BCS conferences simply by virtue of not panicking when Temple left and not adding a bunch of regional FCS schools with questionable success. It's crazy, but right now unless we somehow, some way, get an invitation to the Big East, we are best served by sticking with the MAC. C-USA is weaker than the MAC now. The Sun Belt took several steps backwards. The MWC lost everything that made them great, and the WAC is all but dead.

C-USA Sun Belt WAC Mountain West Based upon your theory, I'd rather be first instead of last. "What do you mean by first GP1?"...Well, we can be a successful, yet forgotten school in a forgotten conference; or, we can be the best team in a division consisting of teams/conferences just like us. Look at the links above. We CAN be like every school in those conferences and we CAN be better. We'll NEVER be an Alabama or LSU...It's just the way the world of college sports works and Zips fans shouldn't fool themselves into thinking we can. It's simply not in the world of reality. If we (MAC) separated from the BCS schools with what remains of the conferences above, we could have our own division and play for a national championship. We can be a regular playoff participant playing meaningful playoff games in December at the Big Dialer. Is the sign of greatness in college football how you do against the universe of those playing your sport, or is it measured by how you do against your peers/equals? I believe it is a measurement of how you do against your peers. Compared to Alabama, Mt. Union is not a great football team. Alabama would score 100 points on them and Mt. Union might not get past the 50 or even a first down. Compared to all of the DIII teams, Mt. Union is a great program. There is certainly no shame in what Mt. Union has given their fans/school over the years even though they are not at the same level as Alabama. It's all how you look at things. I have a story about Zips fans who believe we will be Alabama some day. A Zips fan dies...Well call him Lieutenant Hopping Guy. Lt. Guy gets to the pearly gates and St. Peter is waiting. The conversation goes like this: St. Peter: "Lt. Guy. You've lived a good life. You were a good son. You studied hard and worked hard all of your life. You married and had a great family. You supported your community. You deserve to walk through these gates and spend eternity in Heaven." Lt. Hopping Guy: "Thanks St. Peter. My only request is to stay on Earth for a little longer to see my Zips become as good as schools like Alabama. One day, they will have the right building process and action plans to accomplish this." St. Peter: "You believe this can really take place? The Zips will one day have a program like a Alabama?" Lt. Guy: "We're only a facilities upgrade away." St. Peter: "We have a place already for people who believe as you do. It's called Hell."

Wally B
"IF" we were to create a "AA" league for our selves, how would we aviod the encroaching FCS bloodletting that Montana's former AD forewarned about? Here's an interesting article on the conversion of FBS rules, BCS power, and the role of mid-majors (includes link to Montana story) Should the BCS schools save the WAC? Pretty insightful, certainly more intelligent than your run of the mill MACbbs expansion cr**
GP1
I'd rather live in a condemned house in a rich neighborhood than in the nicest house in the ghetto. Eventually, the rich folks get sick of looking at the condemned house and have it torn down. There is another way of looking at it. I'd rather live in the nicest house in an upper middle class neighborhood if that is what I could afford.

You don't. Montana is going from the frying pan into the fire. Anytime I read a quote from an athletic director, my bull*&^% meter goes off. The guy wants to put on his resume that he moved a team from IAA to IA...that's what I think is going on. If he can't change jobs soon, he will start trying to get facilities upgrades on his resume in order to boost his resume more. College athletics has become largely nonsense. I agree 100%. ODU and JMU have comprehensive athletics programs and solid academics. They would be natural in-state rivals and add VA to the MAC footprint. I'd also like to see UMass and Temple dropped entirely if they refuse to be full members of the MAC. The commissioner needs to let it be known that the MAC is not to be used as an intermediary or stepping stone to another conference.

The French cut an awful lot of heads off during their revolution and they've done OK since. I've strayed pretty far from the MAC in making that statement so I'll leave it at that. Now where were we? akzipper
As much as I hate to say this, Akron's not going anywhere. I used to think eventually we would get out of the terrible MAC. But it's just not going to happen...

I agree with dropping UMass as a MAC affiliate but that's sorta hypocritical of me because I like having WVU as a MAC affiliate as well. bobbyake
The non-revenue MAC sports already travel all over the nation, I can't imagine the travel costs incurred from adding ODU and JMU would be a problem. Don't understand how anyone could be against this

ZachTheZip
C-USA added Old Dominion and Charlotte today. Good move for basketball, terrible move for football. The MAC just moved ahead of them even further. Now they're where the Sun Belt was at, as a starter league for football moveups.

And with the talk of automatic qualifiers being "deleted" from the national championship/playoff/bowl formula - an undefeated and highly ranked MAC team will have just as good of a chance getting to the "dance" as a Big East/CUSA team. akzipper
I think seeing "small" schools like Old Dominion and Charlotte join C-USA is proof that UA really had no interest in moving there. Honestly from a football viewpoint it's a very head-scratching move to add a decent FCS school and another that hasn't even fielded a team yet. Not to mention UTSA?? I would hope that even with our 2 wins in 2 years, we'd be better than a nonexistent team.

Many of us have been saying this for years, but despite the investments UA has committed to athletics places like Charlotte and the Tidewater region have far younger populations that have been steadily increasing. It's got NOTHING to do with wins or losses. Hey, things could be far worse. How would you like to be an Idaho Vandal or New Mexico State Aggie fan right about now?
