Someone needs to smack Rizzo for his noon segment yesterday on why Ohio college graduates are all OSU fans even if they went to another Ohio school. A MAC grad, he's among the lemmings himself.

A guy called up from Mansfield and said, "I like OSU because it's THE Ohio State University." Rizzo's sidekick asked, "Who said it's THE?" The guy responded, "It's in their name. The state legislature wanted them to do that to make sure everyone know it's the most important university in the state." I almost drove off the road.

92.3 looked at this topic earlier this week. However, they were wondering why it is, and said it would be great if a NE Ohio team could step out of OSU's shadow. It was a pretty great discussion and the best part was that Baskin and Phelps, both Can't grads, both thought that the Zips were the likely team to be able to do so. They were ripping on the Can't administration for not taking advantage of the Elite 8 run and said that if that had been the Zips, we would have capitalized on that and become the next Gonzaga.

Using a formal "The" in the title just shows that the institution has been around a long time. It's the way they used to name things back around the turn of the 19th century, as in The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, The University of Akron, etc.

In the modern, informal world, where we go out to nice restaurants in jeans and are limited to 140 characters per tweet, the formal "The" gets lost in a big hurry except among the most pompous.

I hear portage county people say "I'm going to The Walmart", that's what I think of when I hear people say "The Ohio State."

Columbus, Portage County, same thing in my mind.

That sounds suspisciously like employment.

However, even if a few of them lied on the application that they paid someone to fill out, your description needs revision. Marlboros=zigzags and cheesey poofs.
