Porter to Portland?

Good point about the field being small, hadn't though about that, wonder if it could be a factor. That top five list is just Simon Borg's ramblings, he also thinks Bob Bradley could leave Egypt for Portland. Interesting though, Portland have said that they aren't looking to rush for a replacement and just want to hire someone by the end of the calender year. So theoretically Porter could finish up this season for us and then go there. I would prefer if he just didn't though.

I'd prefer Caleb to stick around awhile, too. He's built something very special at Akron. Zips Mens Soccer has become the only sports team I really care about. I can never thank Caleb, his staff, and our players enough for all they have done and continue to do. I'm so proud to support all of them whenever and wherever I can.

Wouldn't money be the biggest factor?

Some of you guys would know this better than me, but is there any real opportunities to obtain a high level of lifetime financial security as a college soccer coach? How much do even the best paid college coaches make?

the average MLS Coach salary in 2007 was $250,000, it's probably above $350,000 now.

Caleb Porter's base salary was $350,000 (includes his $80,000 addition for promoting UA) in 2011. He probably received a few bonuses for the 2011 season.

There is a $200,000 penalty if Porter leaves in the next three years and a $150,000 penalty if he leaves prematurely after that.

For an MLS team to have a shot at Porter, they'd have to pay more than $350,000 a year plus his $200,000 penalty.

Jurgen Klinsmann makes $2.5million a year

I am confident I could gain financial security making $350k per annum.

I don't believe the $350k includes all his benefits (Health, Car allowance, travel). If he's living within a $100,000 a year budget and investing $200,000 a year, his investments will end up making all of his money for him in the future.

MLS names him as a top 5 candidate for the job http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012...es-portland-job

I believe Porter would turn down an offer from Portland. The pitch at JELD-WEN Is 110 by 70 yards, very, very tiny and not ideal for Porter's style

Wow! Surprised to see John Spencer gone after all he's given to Portland football over the years in USL and now MLS. But the other reference on the artice was even MORE amazing!: Eric Wynalda taking a manager's job in whatever the USL is now called (Atlanta Silverbacks, a franchise that has already gone administration once). That is a real loss to Chivas USA, and those who have loved hearing him do their games on Fox West the past two years. Frankly, he's the best soccer/football broadcaster out there. Hopefully he can get his nose on the screen still, somehow.

I believe his gig with Atlanta is only temporary, he's an interim coach while they hire a permanent one, and he'll be back with fox soccer afterwards. The guy clearly has aspirations of coaching, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's back on the sideline shortly.

Thanks for sharing that data. I see that Porter makes more than the average pro soccer coach, which is rather surprising. But, since you mention one who makes 2.5 million, are there others who make significant amounts? And could Caleb have a shot at those jobs?

To some of the others....

No, I am not saying that making 300K doesn't earn you a good living. But, in the coaching profession, I think most people would agree that you'd have to make significantly more money to obtain lifetime security since it may not last for decades. So, I have to wonder whether someone like Caleb might find his current status as a highly regarded coach in his profession as being that rare window of opportunity he may have in a sport like soccer to catapult himself into a big money job.

Porter's career requires him to win another championship.

It may be that Porter's epic failure to qualify U23s to London Olympics may work in UA's favor.

He needs redemption.

But Portland is not the opportunity for him. His inevitable jump to the pros will be with a higher profile MLS franchise, one of the original 10.

Portland is currently a high profile team because of Timbers Army and the fans that pack JELD-Wen every game. Some of the original 10 are slacking

Eh, I don't know if original 10 necessarily = high profile:

Colorado

Columbus

Dallas

DC

LA

NY

New England

Sporting KC

San Jose

Tampa Bay

Out of those, some that immediately pop out to me as not being high profile and not being destinations I would want Porter to go to would be Colorado, Dallas (even though they were in the final two years ago), and probably right now New England. I would rate Seattle higher than all of them right now. I like Porter at DC but not really because that would mean Ben Olsen would have to leave. I also think Sporting could be a good fit and I'd say they are fairly high-profile.

This guy, who is apparently a sports writer based in Portland, tweeted not long ago:

Geoffrey C. Arnold ‏@geoffreyCarnold

Timbers have selected a new coach and a contract has been offered. #rctid

So I guess we'll find out soon enough whether or not it is Caleb

EDIT at 12:27AM

same guy says

Geoffrey C. Arnold ‏@geoffreyCarnold

I'm hearing that University of Akron coach Caleb Porter has been offered job. Timbers refusing to comment. #rctid

:(
