Maybe George can help me out? I would like to know as well. This is the last chance to watch practice before the UCF game. I believe they are closing practice to fans on the 20th. Dr Z
Unidentified sources are telling me that it's 9:30 am. I don't have proof of that though.
NewZipsFan
From what I've heard -- if you get there by 9-9:30 you will be safe. Also - understand this is a "situational" scrimmage. The coaches will put the squads in certain game situations for a number of plays.. (i.e. offense backed up at their own two yard line... offense in the red-zone, etc..) to work on those situations. It won't be a "spring game" like format... But there will be plenty to see for sure.

I want to see the players who are competing for a spot on the 2-deep. I want to compare and contrast talent and skill levels. Thousands of people show up daily to watch the Cleveland Browns run basic drills in t-shirts during pre-season. A situational scrimmage like this will be infinitely more watchable. AKSportsFan
I was asked to leave.... Thanks Guy in the long sleeve gray Akron shirt standing next to Mr. Keener that came and told me I wasn't allowed in and then proceeded to let about 50 other in. No worries I went to the south gate and walked right in.

The 2 guys I was with are board guys too. After the scrimmage, we went to Europe Gyro for a quick lunch and a couple beers. We would have liked to met you. What did you think of the scrimmage? AKSportsFan
I was trying to keep low key after getting turned away... As far as the scrimmage. I think the offense just wasn't clicking. Very hit or miss. I felt like they couldn't string consecutive plays together for an effective grind it out type drives. Although they would break open big plays every now and then. Our Redzone offense is very weak. Its hard to tell if its our defense rockin' or our offense is just sloppy... Dalton threw a couple passes up in the corners that never had any chance. The 100 yard pick six ball should have never ever been thrown and it hit the corner in the chest. The receiver had the hardest time getting off the line. We have big play ability but at the same time our defense cannot give those up to our opponents or it will be a long season.. I kinda felt like they weren't playing inspired. We will see in less than a couple weeks!

zestycoyote
In a couple weeks, we will see against UCF that Fox has at 25 in their preseason rankings. That #25 ranking is a big over-ranking. They're still good enough to beat Akron, but whoever made that pick hasn't been reading about UCF in the news over the past few months. K92
My take on today's scrimmage: Offense The running game looked good. It appears that the Zips have some depth at RB. Chisholm looked leaner and ran hard. I saw nice runs out of Quentin Hines & Conor Hundley. Hakeem Lawrence looked extremely shifty and speedy. That was the positive. The passing game was not impressive as neither quarterbacks nor receivers shone brightly. Many open receivers were thrown uncatchable balls. There were also more than a couple passes dropped. I think Marquelo Suel looked good on a couple of plays and Keith Sconiers looks to be pretty steady. There were definitely some nice pass plays, but overall it appears that this aspect of the offense is still under construction. Red zone offense was ineffective. I really liked the pace. Very quick with no time wasted. The defense was definitely put under some stress keeping up with the rapid fire offense. Defense Kurt Mangum appears to have taken the role of vocal leader of the defense. He looked good. As did Justin March, who had a couple of slobberknocker hits. Overall, the linebacker play looked solid. Defensive line was solid overall, I thought. Albert Presley looked to get upfield quick. Helluva burst. Too quick on a couple of occasions and was whistled offsides. Caponi and Grice looked stout in the middle. The secondary has to be the most improved unit from last year. Everyone seemed to be on the same page as there were no blown coverage breakdowns. I watched Avis Cormack quite a bit. He was stuck to his man like glue. He got right in the wide receiver's hip pocket and stayed there. Very impressive. On the goal line, the D just plain got nasty. Lots of pads were a poppin'. Other than getting ripped on a few long runs, the defense looked good. They seem to have a bit of an attitude, which I like. Of course, all these impressions were gathered from watching the Zips playing the Zips. Who knows how they will stack up against real competition, but I came away from the scrimmage with the feeling that things are going in the right direction and this group of guys is going to competitive before the end of the year. LET'S GO ZIPS!

No worries I went to the south gate and walked right in. I'm very surprised that you were asked to leave. Was any reason given? (Is there some reason that you, personally, aren't allowed at practices??). I'm also very curious who this person was... Your description of grey long sleeve Akron shirt just didn't give me enough info
AKSportsFan
Keener had a #92 Zips Jersey on. I was wearing a blue Akron Shirt Avaitor sunglasses and blue Zips hat. (I'm 22 if that helps) ...The guy that told me to leave asked if I had family on the team and I told him "no" He then said I'm gonna have to ask you to leave because this was a closed practice. He watched Gate#2 the entire scrimmage. For a while I stood at the gate on the northside to watch until I saw a number of people successfully make it past "the gatekeeper" I walked down to the southside and found that gate to be open so I walked in... I wasnt taking notes or giving any reason to be suspicious. Im just a senior thats paid a handsome amount for the piece of paper I get in December....just wanted to check out the team. Disapointed.
