Captain Kangaroo
That was really something to witness. 10 minutes to go in the game and Joyce starts tossing the ball around like a lawn sprinkler. Someone tell me why Peterson gets a quick 7 points and gets benched, while Dials lays brick after brick...gets toasted on D...throws balls away...and rarely sees the pine. It was nice to see Nick yuk it up after his lone 2 points of the game...as Toledo blew past him for a layup 3 seconds later.Down two at game's end, it was nice to see Dru lazily go after the inbounds pass...get it stolen...and give up two more.Yes it was a nice season. Hell...it was a great, overacheiving season by anyone's standards. But that has ZERO to do with tonight's game. This was KD's chance...the Zip basketball team's chance...to make a statement. To get 17k in Cleveland in front of a national TV audience. To meet Can't in the finals. To ensure an NIT bid, at worst. We crapped our pants. KD rode his horses too long. The team lost it's poise. We played exactly like a team that's never been to the 2nd round in Cleveland. If KD wonders why there's no sell outs at the JAR early next season, he needs to look in the mirror. He had his chance to break through in 2006. It was laid out flat as a mackeral for the taking...and we blew it. Maybe more later after I sleep on it...maybe not. I have to believe this puts Toledo past us in the NIT race. PLEASE, no one EVEN ask if we stand a chance of an NCAA bid. We're begging for an NIT.The only thing positive to come out of this game is we probably saved Joplin's job.

fear the brown roo
maybe.....one game doesn't make you but one game sure can break you. i think this one is more on the players than the coaches. i dunno, maybe he should've managed who was in the game better but it was the players who under-performed on the court, not dambrot. Bleacher Bum
I could have actually lived with myself if we would have legitimately lost to K-S-U tomorrow. This is just too hard to swallow!
exexec
I disagree to a small extent-this one is on the coach. Yesterday he died with Dials and Linhart. He must hate Peterson-I will never understand this one from a coaching standpoint. I do agree that half those people there yesterday will not be in the JAR next year. This one doesn't hurt-it is sickening.
liljc
Petersen did play well when he was in there. The guy I thought needed more minutes was Middleton. Dials was having a terrible night shooting the ball and Middleton seemed to have found his stroke. Who knows, it's too late now. Hell, I didn't wanna drive back up there again any damn way. GP1
Excellent post CK. Once again you cut through the crap and get right to the point. You just missed one major point. There is an alarming lack of athletic talent on that team. Dru is slow. Linhart is slow. Dials is slow. Do I really need to go on? Toledo had a more athletic team than Akron and won with athletic talent. Dru wasn't lazy getting to the ball, it just looks like that when a guy with more athletic talent than you beats you to the ball.If Akron could get more consistent scoring out of Middleton, he should play more. He has the speed and quickness to compete against top level players. I think KD is going to live or die with Dru, Romeo, Linhart and Dials. Would you want to risk your career with those guys? Finally, I like to talk about guys who are winners and guys who don't win. Right now, Romeo, Dru and others have completed three years at Akron and really now have nothing to show for it. If you guys remember a few years ago, Bosley and others were going to be the guys who won championships for Akron. What happened? Nothing! These guys have received a pass because they were Lebron's teammates in high school and they were kind of the local glory boys. Enough of that already. These guys need to start performing and living up to the hype. Thank you Captain Kangaroo for opening up the door for public criticism of these guys. Thank you for taking me out of the position of being the jackass again by not making me the first to point out these guys shortcomings in an angry manner.I say to Dru and Romeo, you have one more year to become winners like the soccer and football teams were this year, or you can be just another group of might have beens. Let's get to work.
KingZip
I would say that RT and DJ are more likely to become WHINERS than WINNERS. Without their Cavs buddy they have done nothing except beat bad teams. Fact is the Fighting Irish alums just blew a 12 point lead against a bad Toledo team and could not pull it together. I could give a damn about what they did in f'ing high school and if I have to sit through another game listing to Akron fans talking about the St. Vincent glory days I may just puke. What have you done in college? Not a damn thing except finish in second for two years straight, go 2-4 against Can't State and choke away the chance to play Can't State for a third time in front of a sold out arena in Cleveland. That is why people do not believe in the basketball team because everytime they get close they choke.Thank God for Brookhart and the football team because when they got close they took advantage of the chance and made something happen.Maybe JD can coach basketball too? Dambrot should get him to come give a pregame talk next year when the Zips play again.

Could this be a reason why Rydell Brooks from Buchtel is not on the Zips recruiting radar? Maybe the experiment of taking in local kids with debateable D-1 talent is over?Brookhart stopped the recruiting of any local kids that weren't BCS-level talent. I have to believe it's the same with KD.

Blue & Gold
Funny the conversation turned in this direction. I had the opportunity to see Rydell play Thursday night in the Buchtell-Hoban game at Barberton and, humbly, was not overly impressed. Neither I, nor my friend, believe he's a big D-I type of talent. He's not very confident in his outside shot and he glances down at the ball too much as he dribbles. His passes are also a little slow & inaccurate. I'm just being honest - he'd CRUSH me one-on-one, but he's probably more of a Walsh U. type player. Just by reading his stats in the BJ, I had wanted to go out of my way to see him play. But I was underwhelmed. Maybe this Lance Jeter from Pittsburgh is the real deal?

That is why people do not believe in the basketball team because everytime they get close they choke.Um, that was three years ago. Excellent response above. It is because of people like this that we don't sell out. In any sport these people try to find the negative and ignore the positive. They are the people who will ride the wave and jump on the band wagon when all is well, but they are the first to Bitch to everyoe they know when you lose a game. That keeps those who don't follow the team from trying it out.I woke up this morning and put on my Zips gear before heading out. My wife asked me why I wore that stuff when they lost yesterday. I said, "that is exactly why I am wearing it!" A true fan supports the team even when it is hard and you are pissed. A Fair Weather jumps on when it is good (and easy!), shows up 10 minutes after the start of the game, has to buy a t-shirt since he never purchased one in the past. He then is late getting back to his seat during halftime. You will also see him leave with 1:32 left on the clock regardless of whether we are winning or losing. It is funny how winning cures everything. Many of you could go back to posts you made as early as this week and you will find yourself praising these guys after big wins. I know yesterday hurt, but try to be a bit objective! We are, by KD's own words, one or two players off before being the team he wants. Wood will help a lot next year. We missed him last night. He has always maintainded that our bench is not as deep as he would like. Did KD make coaching mistakes? Sure. Did the players fail to execute the strategy he may have tried to put in place? Probably. There are so many factors to consider here that you can't blame one person.Always a Zip fan, win or lose.

All year long I witnessed DP sitting on the bench and for months I said it would come back and bite KD. Last night it did. To think that his idiotic substituting led to us blowing the first-half 13 point lead, he makes some of the same mistakes and blows a second half lead as well. He played his boys Linhart and Dials--now he has to pay the price.
zipfan 81
I dont get why he picks a select few (of course I get Joyce and Travis, they came from St V) but Dials and Linhart? Why does he stick with them? Because Dials was from Ohio State or because he recruited him before Ohio State. I just don't get it. To see DP sit after 7 points is just sickening to me, just sickening. I heard his girl talking about it and boy are they pissed and can't figure it out either! I saw this all year long and knew sooner or later this would happen.
zipsbandman
Outstanding posts by everyone.I like the point about Romeo and Dru. I think these two choked the most on Friday besides Dials. Rome was a nonfactor the last ten minutes of the game, and he bricked two straight free throws when we needed to score the most.Dru had no idea what he was doing. He tried driving to the hole but got stuffed and could not even draw a foul. On top of that, he cannot make a clutch shot to save his life.I say let's follow football's lead and get the best talent we can get. Sometimes the local guys just don't cut it.I will say that sitting Peterson makes Dambrot look really bad. This is D-1 basketball! Coaches should not be playing favorites. Now as far as next year is concerned and the athleticism problem. Granted Wood comes back, Conyers gets his stuff straigtened out, we will have a lot of athletes. This McKnight kid is going to be a real player in my opinion, and I also look forward to seeing Daryl Roberts. Add them with Romeo and Cedric. These guys are all athletes and will contribute well. We need Bardo to come out strong since we will be lacking centers, but we are deep at the guard and forward positions.I look for these new guards to challenge Joyce and Dials. Dambrot needs to play the best guy!
