Blue & Gold
Alright, let me toss this out to The Nation & see what you guys think...After about 2 years, I'm getting the feeling that unless you're a diehard Zips fan (like myself), people generally think the "Capital 'A' w/ Kangaroo head" logo is rather dumb (the logo we have on the sides of our football helmets.) I work with jr. high & high school kids & have had quite a few of them look at that logo, being unfamiliar w/ the UA program, and ask what it is & then just reply, "Oh. That's dumb." I've literally had about 5 of them ask, "Is that a donkey head?"So... what if we would go with that extremely cool "Z" on the sides of our helmets instead of the A-Kangaroo head. The same "Z" we have centered beneath the neck of our jerseys and on the sides of the JAR floor? Would that be "cooler"? Like I said before - I'll bet we all like the A-Kangaroo head, but we're all die hard Zips fans who may be a bit blinded by our bias. I'm basing my suggestion on what I've heard from people not familiar w/ the Zips program - people we should be trying to win over! We'll be fans regardless, but maybe we should be thinking about casual observers? So, what's the nation think? Would that "Z" logo look cool on the sides of our helmets? Or no? UAZipster0305
HS kids reply to something as being "cool" shouldn't be a motivation for changing our logos. The typical high school mentality of things being cool and being concerned with poularity is not relevant in the real world. College sports is rooted in tradition, which they would have no clue about. If we continue to win and improve our stature, then any logo we put on our helmets will be regarded as "cool." mrelegazna
Trimmy sort of made the same point, but HS and JHS kids think everything is dumb. And why would our fandom play a biased role? The Z is our logo too. Wouldn't we just as biased towards that?I like the A/kangaroo head better than the Z, myself.
zippyrifle32
i like the head with the a better than the "z" too. as far as people asking if it's a donkey head i wouldn't mind seeing it changed to just the action roo. i love our mascot and think it's a heck of a lot cooler than the old fashion "a"as long as there's a roo there, i'm happy. zen
Donkey? haha We have various logos for apparel now. I don't see why the A-roohead is so bad, but then like you said, maybe we are biased.I think the letter Z is a very very good letter. It is mysterious, because it is not commonly used.Aestetically, it can be both sweeping and sensual, but it can be powerful and sharp (like blades).I also noticed that the Z in zips has some splays near the points, and it reminds me of a thunderbolt. Now, I know that thunderbolts are not in anyway associated with current themes, but I think it can add something to that powerful-sharp appeal to the letter:
TXZipFan
Go Old School with it... IMO I think the old plain "A" was really nice looking on throwback day. Imagine putting the old helmet with the new unis... BTW I heard that there will be new uni's worn this year... word is carolina panthers style. That's just what I've heard can anyone confirm this? They actually don't look much different than the ones they already wear.
GoZips88
Roo head and 'A' for me. Old school is a little ho-hum. Watch it with the lightning bolt "Z" - don't want to be too Golden Flush-like!
Quickzips
Why do we continue debating this topic. Look we are FINALLY getting the Zips some national attention and it is coming in these uniforms. Changing them now is absolutely idiotic. There is just no other way to put it. I don't mind the throwbacks for a game each year but leave the uniforms the same. Changing them every five years is only going to make it more likely that people will forget who we are and not watch us. Think about it. Some guy who just casually watched the MACC game for instance is flipping through the channels next fall and he sees those uniforms again. Now he generally would have no interest in the zips and would just flip right through but he associates those uniforms with that team that he watched a year ago and he enjoyed that game. It was exciting and it was good football. So he decides to watch that game. And thus a new zips fan begins to be born. You change that uniform and that same fan would just flip straight through and never give that game a second thought. KEEP THE UNIFORMS THE SAME! ziptrumpet87
I somewhat agree. The helmet logo is too new to be changing already and should stay. Changing the stripe on the pants (ala Carolina Panthers) wouldn't be OK though I think (especially if the A-Roo is used there also). And the colors have to stay the same! zipsbandman
If we ever go back to those Can't state colors i will

Beanie 4 Heisman
The Z looks terrible. Keep the A and the roo head. Ooo it was your beloved form assistant ad UAM that wanted to change the Uniforms. So blame him for the change. Only the white unis will be different this year. the blues will still be the same though.
KNCLZip
Long-time lurker, first time poster here......The uniforms are fine as is. It would be nice if they would leave the white AND blue jerseys alone since it seems that we go with white when we have a choice, like us being the "home" team at the Motor City Bowl and wearing white. Why change the uniforms we wear in big-time appearances like bowls or games in Columbus or Madison? Plus, my jersey is the current white variety and I'd like to stay current. We don't need to make changes every year. We're growing in profile and should keep some continuity in our appearance. The Thanksgiving throwbacks were great and it would be nice to see those once in a while, but keep the primary jersey, both home and away, the same as now! gozips19
keep it the way it is ... and the old school look has too much of a canadian football vibe to it. never mess with a streak! keep it the way it is.
Zipsrifle
I don't care what JH or HS kids think. If they don't go to Akron because the Logo looks dumb, great! If that is your criteria for picking a college then UA don't want ya. Lets start building some tradition.
zipsbandman
Really, who ever thought that the name, "ZIPS", was going to catch on or a kangaroo as a mascot. As we start making noise in college sports, people will come know and respect the Akron logo. It's our job as a fanbase to sell it.
Balki Bartokomous
Akron spent a ton of money having the new logo created. Having another one done would be stupid. As long as we don't go back to the Atlanta Braves style, cursive "A". That thing sucked.
mrelegazna
Akron spent a ton of money having the new logo created. True, and that has always bothered me (though I do like not just the logo but pretty much the entire package of logos, alternate logos, uniforms, etc). If there's one type of institution that shouldn't be outsourcing creative graphic arts stuff, it's a university. Hello, a pool of 20,000+ bright young minds eager to create! I'm absolutely positive that the students could've put something together just as good, if not better, than our current package. You could make it a contest. It would've been a GREAT pr move, and it's always good to involve students as much as possible. It's what a university is there for. As a side note, I liked the basketball throwbacks but I'm ready to go back to the regular ones now...er, next season.
Beanie 4 Heisman
That is a great idea to have students create logos. if we have decide to make a change or make an alternate logo they should have a contest type thing.
liljc
Personally, I like the helmet now. I like Zippy and the A together. I loved the retro jerseys from the Can't State (blizzard) game last year, but I prefer the new helmet logo to the old ones.
Blue & Gold
I've got a friend studying computer graphics design @ the U and he does absolutely amazing work! It would be interesting to see what the arts department would come up with! And I love the old-gold throwback b-ball uni's!!! I'm hoping we go with a gold (as opposed to white) motif next season!!! Balki Bartokomous
Akron does have a really good graphic design program. I bet some solutions that came out of there would destroy what Akron has now. Plus the university could have got it for real cheap, not thousands upon thousands. Zipmeister
With a big Z on our helmuts we could also switch the fight song to the theme from Zorro.
fear the brown roo
With a big Z on our helmuts we could also switch the fight song to the theme from Zorro. we're not going to have a dance team known as the "gay-blades" are we? zen
If there's one type of institution that shouldn't be outsourcing creative graphic arts stuff, it's a university. Hello, a pool of 20,000+ bright young minds eager to create! Seriously, this post is right on! I didn't know that we outsourced that! Even if the logo was outsourced, I'll bet a case of beer it was a student who came up with the "fear the roo" thing. Probably spelt it "Phear teh Roo" at the time too. LOL.But really, if you want marketing that appeals to student agegroups and sports fans, college students can do it better than a bunch of pencil necks at a marketing firm.
