Good news for GP1. In tonights press conference coach Bowden made the following statement while going over our new QB (Woodson) recruit's tape. "We are going to let the QB run for some first downs this year" I'll be happy to ask coach next time I see him what changed his mind from last season when he told us that he doesn't like his QB running because he would be at the bottom of a pile and he needs to lineup and get the next play called. I would guess that it stems from another quote of his, "we need to find a way to win in the Mac." I would bet Zac Dysert's game at the Info last year might have swayed coach some. But for the fans that would like to see the QB tuck the ball and take off, we might be in for something different this year. It was just one small comment, but it caught my attention. Anyone else catch it?

PS I see Zac's name in some top 100 NFL draft pick lists this year. Best talent I saw at Info last season.

Im not going to look too much into that comment. I dont think TB wants anything more than what Kyle Pohl showed last year against Toledo. That being a QB with the ability to get a first down when the defense drops 8. I dont think he is changing his philosophy up and wanting a Jordan Lynch or Clayton Moore.

I recall that he followed up that statement by saying that we had a lot of passing attempts last year, but not enough completions, and that we might have to run the ball more in order to win football games.

I believe having the threat of the run keeps the defense honest is all he meant. with all the OL signees, it will be harder to dominate us rushing 3 or 4 as well

This is good news. It shows that TB is willing to make changes based upon what he observes in lieu of being an ideologue. Ideologues are narrow minded fools and we don't need one as coach of our team.

I figured you would like that. I like you, appreciate adaptation. I promise the next time I get a chance to speak with coach, I'll follow up for some clarification and repost in this thread. George, if you would like to use this as one of your mailbag questions feel free (start at the top of this post for clarification).

Not really sure why this would be a revelation or why some might question the statement. I believe the term that some of us used on this site last year was to have the QB run 'effectively'. Doesn't have to be a Lynch. He was an old wingback formation RB who could throw effectively. Even in the NFL now the QB is needed to become at least a threat to p/u a first down with his feet. Charley Frye wasn't a real good passer but he could scramble enough in college to keep defenses 'honest'. We saw last year that defenses have adapted to the rythmn passing game. TB is to be applauded for being wiling to adjust.

At the early season ticket event before the hoops game tonight, Coach Bowden took a few questions after giving us his thoughts on the 2013 season. Zips Win! asked whether the QB job was KP16's heading into spring ball. Coach said Pohl is #1 although there is always competition at every position. He said Kyle has an "NFL arm" and can run a 4.6 forty. He mentioned how the staff had reviewed the 2012 seasons of the other 5 or 6 teams that run the "Texas Tech" offense and how most of them ran for over 200 yards per game. He plans for Pohl to help with that figure for the Zips in 2013. But he still wants a thrower who can run when needed as opposed to a runner who can throw when needed.

On a side note, DW13 is working with the staff in some capacity, helping out with the QBs. I think he'll help out quite a bit.

Just to add on to this point, he also noted that of the teams that were running this offense and rushing for over 200 yards, the difference that we didn't have was a mobile quarterback. Texas A&M, Baylor, WVU all had mobile qb's.

Even though Geno is the fastest QB in this year's draft, I dont think his 151yds rushing on the season is comparable to Florence's (568) or Manziel's (1410).

Bowden obviously knows the difference since he has hit on it. Pohl will be able to pick up the slack in the area where Williams lacked.
