Captain Kangaroo Posted May 9, 2006 Author Report Posted May 9, 2006 My Sekai Greer memory:We're beating Hampton something like 58-0 and Lee Owens puts Greer in to punch in a 5 yard TD to go to 65-0. Greer fumbles twice. A frustrated Lee Owens inserts starter Bobby Hendy...who had already taken off his thigh pads...to get the score up to 65-0. This is the same Lee Owens that called the onside kick when we were beating Liberty 42-14 in the 4th quarter. Lee really liked trying to humiliate the 1-AA lower echelon.Hey...its a slow board period...as good a time as any to discuss obscure Zips memories. Quote
GoZips Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 CAP'N, I recently attended Ashland's Spring football game. Lee Owen's wasn't likely trying to pound on I-AA competition so much as he just loves gadgetplays. After one side had scored the first TD Owens ordered a fake kick and ran a passplay to attempt (they failed) a two point play. This is just pure Lee Owens.Just as Owens loved gadget plays he feared turning his defense loose. Like actual Zipsgames there was no pass rush or blitzing allowed in the Ashland Spring game. Soundfamiliar?Jon Fergusson, heir appearant per coach Jim Meyer, looked out of sync most of hissnaps. Freshman Chris McCarty of Akron East HS easily outshown Fergusson. I mighthave this name slightly wrong as the game was two weeks ago.Ashland is likely to improve on their 9-2 record of last season and probably make thedivision 2 playoffs and national ranking. All in all, pretty good for a team that neverputs on a pass rush let alone a blitz. A huge influx of I-A and I-AA caliber of playersserves any division 2 school well. I look for Ashland to make the jump to I-AA if Owensremains there. One last thing. The Ashland boosters put on a darn fine pregame feed and playerintroduction. Akron could learn from this event. They had a larger crowd than pre JDattendance at Akron. I'd estimate approximately 800 people in attendance. Quote
gozips19 Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 trick plays are fine but you don't run them when you are up like that in the 4th.... as for the ashland game i really don't care what they do.. i wish fergie the best of luck but he is no longer on akron's roster for a reason...thank god JD is akron's coach! InTheZone Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 No pass rush allowed? What did the D-line do on pass plays? Just stand there?? Yes...that does remind me quite a bit of our pass rush under Lee Owens . Quote
Dan Kadar Posted May 9, 2006 Report Posted May 9, 2006 that does remind me quite a bit of our pass rush under Lee Owens . Ha! That made me choke on my drink of water. Quote

They'll never expect it!"Butchie: "But Coach, no one had covered Lavel Bailey all game. I can hit him for a first down no sweat."Lee Owens: "Butchie, never underestimate the element of surprise!"Butchie: But Coach...we run that Goddamn 3rd and 7 draw play every MF-ing game. Everyone knows it's comin'. Hell...those drunk Mf-ers in the endzone are screaming 'DON"T RUN THE DRAW PLAY' at the top of their lungs! Just let me throw it to Lavel!!"Lee Owens: "Draw play to Chris Rooney. Run it or I'll put in Gromek."Announcer: "...and a loss of 2 yards for the Zips brings up a 4th and 9." Quote

Guess the one freaking time Butchie did not listen was at Penn State. Now I know why he was pulled for Gromek in that game. Quote
