Game #8 Miami

I like your thinking, MDZip. I think Pohl will enjoy playing before a small but feisty contingent of friends and family, and he’ll settle in for a nice game. JC7 takes the momentum from the NIU game and has his 1st 100-yard game of 2013. The defense, finally able to face a struggling offense, shows its teeth.

I like the Zips winning big this weekend. Teams that fire their coach mid season either get a spark from it or they flame out. The flamed out last weekend. They are counting the days until the end of the season.

Akron 35

Miami 14

Never even that close. Miami scores a late TD to add some respectability to the score.

If we give up 14 points to Miami, it's because our defense played their worst game of the year, or special teams let a return go all the way. They're averaging 9.0 ppg.

Supposedly, they changed to an option offense in 2013 like Army or Navy, but are also trying out the spread. Agree with you in that I'm not too worried about our defense handling this attack and our special teams giving up points is a concern.

They will score easily late in the game against the same back-up players some people wanted to see start last week. Our starters will handle them easily.

What makes you think our defense is on par with the defenses they're been playing?

I'm optimistic for the win, but would anybody really be surprised if we lose this game?

I actually feel a little bit bad for the Sweaters. Since there isn't much discussion on the game I popped into their discussion on a new head coach. Depressingly similar to ours a couple of years ago a mix of retreads, unknowns and hoping an alumnus comes back and takes the job. Sound familiar? I am still grateful Terry Bowden ended up with the Zips.

Thanks for posting this MDZip. Interesting indeed. Goes to show how many bad coaches there are out there. It is true Miami is in around the same position we were a couple of years ago. How the two programs got so bad though are completely different stories. Miami got bad as a result of a good AD who had lost interest in the school. Akron got bad as a result of a terrible AD who had no clue what he was doing.

Miami has a long road ahead of them. It could be a suicide mission for a young coach. I look for them to hire a retread who is willing to take the job.

There is nothing wrong with a retread. Frank Solich is one, and Ohio is very well-off because of him. In many ways, Bowden is too, but I find this to be a harsh description. I'm very satisfied with the progress of this team under his leadership. Unfortunately, it is yet to yield more wins; however, I can feel them coming.

I don't like the term retread either, but not sure what other word to use.

Depends on what everyone means by retread. A coach who worked his way through smaller college football programs into bigger programs and then moved back into a smaller one is in fact retreading ground he once covered. If the implication is that he's like an old tire carcass patched up with a new tread, that kind of retread would be less flattering. Simply calling a coach experienced or veteran would be a more neutral alternative for retread.

Am I the only person who has DirecTV and hates that the MAC has this stupid deal with ESPN3? So frustrating that I'm forced to purchase an inferior product to watch football.

I'm with you. I don't have cable and my internet provider doesn't have an agreement with ESPN so I'm screwed. I've got 'em on the radio.
