Former Zip Player/Coaches On The Move

Three updates on former UofA coaches and players moving around the coaching ranks.First, former QB Mike Johnson is now with the the Ravens as WR coach. Formerly with the Falcons as QB coach. Future Zips head coach some day? Probably not due to lack of college experience.Second, Gerald Carr is now the offensive coordinator at University of Buffalo. He was a former QB coach at UA and coached Mike Johnson. Doesn't even list his time a Akron in his UB biography. Probably too long ago now. Interestingly enough, his wife was the dance team coordinator for the Cavs while they live here in Akron and the Cavs played in Richfield.Lastly, Hal Hunter is now assistant offensive line coach with the San Diego Chargers. Former UA line coach and was last at Univ. of North Carolina as OL coach. He was the best coach on staff when I was in school. I don't understand why he never made it any higher than offensive coordinator at Indiana. It's amazing what a racket that coaching profession is. These guys have been all over the place the past 20 years. I can't think of a single good reason to get into that profession. I guess if it is the one single thing you are good at, you do it.Oh well, back to building my ark. How about this rain?

An assistant AD and a bball coach was his first priority.  Locking up KD and JD was the second followed by the stadium.  Number two better be underway if Mack knows what's good for him.
There is an article on Mack in the new alumni magazine. He speaks about the new stadium.I keep meaning to scan it and show it to you guys (who don't get the alumni magazine)I don't think it is offered online anywhere?

great, we'll worry about a new stadium that will be empty after a year if we don't have a winning program. agreed, we need a new stadium, but first things first. it's easier to spend a few thousand dollars more for a quality coach compared to millions for a stadium. not taking care of JD would send out a bad message to any potential new coaches of how cheap akron is. how the hell can Can't state pay more to it's head coach than we do?

I SO agree with this line of thinking-- both KD and JD need-- and deserve-- to be paid in the top tier of MAC coaches. They should have a base that is pegged to the 80th percentile of MAC coaches with incentives that take them to the top and beyond. PLUS a seniority bonus of some sort-- a huge bonus for staying for 5 or 7 years. After the crew of horrible coaches UA has experienced, they need to lock up these good ones NOW period end of story before anything else. Figure out how much the teams lose in revenue by starting over with new coaches, how much we pay in consultants, how much a new coaching contract will cost-- figure all that in and it is incredibly cheaper to retain known success than gamble on fresh meat.GET THESE CONTRACTS DONE! THEY WANT TO STAY-- DONT GIVE THEM REASONS TO LEAVE!!

Three Questions:1.) Does anyone seriously think that tying up JD with a respectable contract isn't at the top of MR's priority list?2.) Do you think that he's spoken to JD at all regarding the status of his justifiably enhanced contract?3.) Do you really think that...if Stoops leaves Oklahoma and Oklahoma calls JD...that there's any chance in hell he stays in Akron? In summation I say: 1.) Mack knows JD deserves compensation for his proven efforts.2.) JD will get the compensation. 3.) Regardless of what the compensation is...and it will be very fair with respect to MAC coach's salaries...if a large BCS school wants his services any time soon, they will dwarf whatever Akron could offer. This is no different than any other school, by the way. If the Miami Dolphins want Nick Saban...LSU needs to begin looking for another coach. If the NY Knicks need a new coach...the Detriot Pistons begin looking for a new coach.Zips football is in a position where...if JD exits...which we all hope isn't for some time...we'll be able to roll on with an excellent replacement. That, is something I personally don't feel like we need to worry about for a couple years...but if we do next year...I guess that means we had another kick-ass season. I can deal with that. Some people on this board still think Dennis Helsel is still at the wheel. There's no going back. Dennis is gone.
