Please add Hofbrau Oktoberfest

Funny, I had the Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier at the Beer Market right after the big win last Saturday in Pittsburgh. I told the barmaid that she either pulled the wrong handle or they put the wrong keg in it's spot. I told her it was just HB. She poured one to compare, she was right, I was forced to drink both. I guess I'm just an ignorant american Oktoberfest beer drinker. Even though she didn't seem to mind, I feel I owe her an apology. She also stated I wasn't the first to question the color.

For anyone else that didn't know, see the below explanation just incase you go here.

"There is a huge difference between the German Oktoberfest producers and the American ones. Until scientists linked hard water to brewing techniques and figured out ways to adapt the pH in local water, dear old Munchen was not very good at making pale beers. Traditionally Munich beers are darker and maltier, so the traditional Oktoberfest as it was historically is an Amber-brown lager much like we know in the United States today. In the late 20th century, Munich brewers began to make a paler, crisper beer, possibly as a result of the heat at the festival being too much to drink a heavier, sugary beer. In America, our beers remain darker."

Good info, Dr Z! I wasn't all that enamored with the Hofbrau Oktoberfest - I much preferred the one from Hacker-Pschorr (just enough sweet, caramel aftertaste for me).

Mostly, I held an ice cube in the right side of my mouth to kill the pain. :( I didn't get to try any chili. :(

Here's to a "normal" tailgate in Athens this Saturday!

First of all let me say that when Ball State says the tailgating lots open 3 hours before the game that's what they mean. We couldn't get in until 11 A.M. When we entered, they parked us at the opposite end as the rest of our fans, so we actually had to exit the lot, go around the block and enter from the other side. Once we finally got through the initial hassle, we had a pretty darn nice tailgate. Ball State had an impressive group of people set up. The best I have ever seen at a MAC game. A lot of them must have stayed in the lot because the crowd in the stadium did not reflect the tailgating action.

I did not arrive until 4:45, but I had a pretty nice abbreviated tailgate last night. First of all, let me say that JZ84 can whip up a mean batch of poutine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poutine Delicious and much appreciated.

Although the beer list was small compared to a Saturday game, the quality could not have been any finer. We had another home brew to try, this one from the brewery "Ol Dirty Basement". Fall Jacket was an English Brown with pumpkin pie spices that was quite tasty. Awesome job brewing your first batch, Heather.

My friend Zipgrad01 hooked me up with a crowler of Willoughby's Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter. This is one of my favorite beers and it tasted and poured as if we had a keg of it right there in Lot 9. First crowler ever for me. For those unfamiliar:

As if that wasn't enough of a treat, I also got the opportunity of a lifetime to try Westvleteren 12. Yes. The beer that has occupied the very top of many best beer lists. It lived up to the hype. I have to thank our friend Shawn for being generous enough to share some with his fellow Zip fans.

This is one of the greatest things about following the Zips. The depth of friendships that we have fostered over beer, food and love of the Zips is incredible. Our small community is the most caring, sharing group of people you could ever be around and being able to look back at all the good times we've had will keep you smiling all week. Wouldn't trade my tailgating friends for anything.

Thanks to all of you.

Epic Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout
Great Lakes Christmas Ale
Nøgne Ø Special Holiday Ale
Nøgne Ø Winter Ale
Ol Dirty Basement Fall Jacket

Thirsty Dog Citra Dog
Trappist Westvleteren 12
Victoria
Willoughby Peanut Butter Cup Coffee Porter

K92 - as a good friend of mine once said, it's so much more fun to prepare food for an appreciative crowd!

Please add the following Quebec brews to the list:

Unibroue La Fin du Monde

Unibroue Don de Dieu (paired well with the poutine)

JZ brings us to 252. :gun:

Beer drinking was a bit of a struggle outside Tuesday, so we took the tailgate across the street. If you haven't checked out The Score yet, you need to. Quite a transformation in there. Everything is new and clean and painted Blue and Gold. I had a cheesesteak and fries and I thought the food was pretty darn tasty. They are poised to take a big bite out of B-Dubs basketball crowd.

Black Christmas
Clown Shoes Brown Angel
Delirium Nocturnum
Evil Twin I Love You With My Stout
Jackie O's Mandala IPA
Meantime Coffee Porter
N'Ice Chouffe
Ommegang Adoration
Prager Dunkles
Score Brew
Shiner Holiday Cheer
St. Bernardus Tripel
Yuengling Black & Tan

Sounds like good advice. Did they have N'Ice Chouffe on tap? That would be a game changer for me.
