Z.I.P. Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 This topic has gotten much play on the interwebs today! ESPN shows that our dadgum football coach has offered this guy -- without much chance of getting him. On the other hand, he's almost unheard of in soccer -- and hasn't even played club ball! Should Jared offer him -- or should that other dadgum coach bribe Jared to put him on a soccer scholarship? Well, we only have 9.5 of those dadgumit!http://www.topdrawersoccer.com/the91stminute/2014/09/football-or-futbol-big-time-recruit-picks-soccer/?utm_source=All&utm_campaign=general_9_15_14&utm_medium=emailhttp://espn.go.com/college-sports/football/recruiting/player/_/id/195960/drake-davis Quote
Zip_ME87 Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 Isn't there a receiver for the San Diego Chargers in the NFL who chose to play basketball in college? Yeah, Antonio Gates, I believe. There may be others with similar backgrounds, but I'm not well versed on NFL players. My point is that choosing soccer today at one level doesn't necessarily preclude football tomorrow at another level if one is a great athlete. Also, perhaps this guy is a good student, too. That could make him eligible for an academic scholarship. Soccer scholarships are limited, but other possibilities sometimes present themselves. Quote
GP1 Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 We should be getting better soccer players than him at UofA.Little to no chance of getting him for football. Everyone gets scholarship offers.Let him go to Europe for a summer (a great experience) and then come back and decide what he really wants to do. Quote
fknbuflobo Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 Weird story! Wonder where this one goes. Quote
Dr Z Posted September 16, 2014 Report Posted September 16, 2014 There may be others with similar backgrounds, but I'm not well versed on NFL players. The Julius Thomas story is an interesting one if you don't know it already. Ray Seals went from playing for the minor-league Syracuse Express of the Empire Football League to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1989. He moved to the Steelers in '94 as a free agent and played two seasons as their starting right defensive end. He was injured in '96, his third season with the Steelers, and finished with Carolina in '97.Eric Swann was bound for North Carolina State University, but was ruled academically ineligible. Rather than enrolling at NC State as a Proposition 48 student, Swann instead opted to attend Wake Technical Community College. In 1990, he left Wake Technical to join the semi-pro Bay State Titans in Lynn, Massachusetts with a $5 an hour salary. In 1991, Swann signed a five-year contract with the Phoenix Cardinals. Darren Bennett was born in Australia and kicked for the Chargers without attending your typical college route. Quote
