Where's Akron U?

Akron U bugs the hell out of me...but I grew up in Painesville and hadn't heard of UA till High School (late 90s) and UA was UA at that point (though the bowling balls in Gardner still said 'AU'). As far as I can tell, folks that have grown up with the University and knowing of it, some are still slow at switching over from Akron U. University of Akron just sounds so much better...

I have never really seen the big deal. I don't believe that people really look at Akron any differently between Akron U. and the University of Akron, although I do say The University of Akron. But please God tell me that nobody actually emphasizes the "The" in The University of Akron. For all the hatred that is spewed here towards Ohio State, it'd be pretty lame and hypocritical to straight up copy them.

I think if you grew up in Akron or Summit County, "Akron U," is the way locals say it. I tell people I meet who aren't from Akron I am a University of Akron (or "Akron") alumnus, but when talking to my family or friends from the area, "Akron U." is the preferred term. It's all in where you're from. And I still say "Green High", not the High School of Green. :P

Come to think of it .. I'm surprised Z-P isn't ticked it isn't still called Buchtel College like when he was our age.
Hey ... Hey ... Hey, let's not have any sarcastic comment about age on this site. Not only do I probably have underwear older and with more experience than you, but when I first started at THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON it was a city college and was called Akron University. Remember the older you get your short term memory gets a little shaky so if I sometimes slip and Akron U. comes out, please forgive. Even in my day some things were the same :screwks::screwks:

My "Old" buddy ZW just tweeked at thought..............What do you guys think the average age is for the board regulars? I'll bet we've got a pretty extreme range................I'll start it off and confess that I'm probably in the top side 95th percentile at 58.Anyone top that ;)

I turn 41 tomorrow (class of '88) and it's always been the 'U of A' or 'The University of Akron' for me. Akron U sounds like Podunk U to me and I get a good ribbing at work and everywhere else I happen to be when I step up and 'correct' someone :nono:. 'THE ...' is pretty arrogant and is deserving of the school down south. I about lose my lunch everytime I hear someone say 'THE Ohio State University.' :puke:

The U is what sucks, not that we don't say The University of Akron.Nobody else uses U.It's Michigan, not Michigan U. Texas. Not Texas U. Miami, not Miami U, Cincinnati, not Cincinnati U, etc. Why do people say Akron U? It's just Akron.
Z.I.P beat me to it. I don't think anyone outside the Akron area ever says "Akron U." It's a local term to distinguish from Akron, the city, proper.
