Z-P Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 C'mon guys..............at least on this board it should never happen.UA, Akron, THE University of Akron, the Zipdom, but not Akron U! Quote
sgm405 Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 1. It's really not that big of a deal.2. For all of the OSU haters in here, I'm not sure why they'd want to copy and emphasize the "The" before the name. Quote
Zip Watcher Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 C'mon guys..............at least on this board it should never happen.UA, Akron, THE University of Akron, the Zipdom, but not Akron U! What he said. Quote
Kangaroo Craig Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 C'mon guys..............at least on this board it should never happen.UA, Akron, THE University of Akron, the Zipdom, but not Akron U! That's always been a pet peeve of mine too! Quote
zippyrifle32 Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 well it's better than what my grandma is always telling people...university of ohio at akron. then i correct her and she says university of akron ohio...lol i correct her politely again and let it slide caues she is in her mid-80's and losing it a bit. Zip Watcher Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Come to think of it .. I'm surprised Z-P isn't ticked it isn't still called Buchtel College like when he was our age. Quote
RowdyZip Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Akron U bugs the hell out of me...but I grew up in Painesville and hadn't heard of UA till High School (late 90s) and UA was UA at that point (though the bowling balls in Gardner still said 'AU'). As far as I can tell, folks that have grown up with the University and knowing of it, some are still slow at switching over from Akron U. University of Akron just sounds so much better... Quote
sgm405 Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I have never really seen the big deal. I don't believe that people really look at Akron any differently between Akron U. and the University of Akron, although I do say The University of Akron. But please God tell me that nobody actually emphasizes the "The" in The University of Akron. For all the hatred that is spewed here towards Ohio State, it'd be pretty lame and hypocritical to straight up copy them. Quote
Buckzip Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 The U is what sucks, not that we don't say The University of Akron.Nobody else uses U.It's Michigan, not Michigan U. Texas. Not Texas U. Miami, not Miami U, Cincinnati, not Cincinnati U, etc. Why do people say Akron U? It's just Akron. Quote
RowdyZip Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 screwin around on myspace...some of the football players list that they play football for THE Universtity of Akron, yes with the THE capitalized. Also, I like U of A, not as much as The University of Akron, but U of A is ite with me. Quote

sgm405 Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I hear it mostly as Ohio I never ever hear Ohio. Mostly OU, sometimes Ohio University...never Ohio though. Quote
Z.I.P. Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I think if you grew up in Akron or Summit County, "Akron U," is the way locals say it. I tell people I meet who aren't from Akron I am a University of Akron (or "Akron") alumnus, but when talking to my family or friends from the area, "Akron U." is the preferred term. It's all in where you're from. And I still say "Green High", not the High School of Green. Quote
ZipAlumn Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 Come to think of it .. I'm surprised Z-P isn't ticked it isn't still called Buchtel College like when he was our age.Hey ... Hey ... Hey, let's not have any sarcastic comment about age on this site. Not only do I probably have underwear older and with more experience than you, but when I first started at THE UNIVERSITY OF AKRON it was a city college and was called Akron University. Remember the older you get your short term memory gets a little shaky so if I sometimes slip and Akron U. comes out, please forgive. Even in my day some things were the same Quote
Z-P Posted August 15, 2006 Author Report Posted August 15, 2006 My "Old" buddy ZW just tweeked at thought..............What do you guys think the average age is for the board regulars? I'll bet we've got a pretty extreme range................I'll start it off and confess that I'm probably in the top side 95th percentile at 58.Anyone top that Quote
GoZips88 Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I turn 41 tomorrow (class of '88) and it's always been the 'U of A' or 'The University of Akron' for me. Akron U sounds like Podunk U to me and I get a good ribbing at work and everywhere else I happen to be when I step up and 'correct' someone . 'THE ...' is pretty arrogant and is deserving of the school down south. I about lose my lunch everytime I hear someone say 'THE Ohio State University.' Quote
Zipmeister Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I think Z.I.P. may be onto something here. When talking to folks from my home town, Akron, I refer to the school as Akron U. When talking to outsiders its Akron University or the University of Akron. Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I like the pretentious:"The University at Akron" Quote
Balki Bartokomous Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I had some idiot refer to the U of A as "Akron college". needless to say i wrapped a folding chair around his face. anyone else get "Akron college" thats ever worse than Akron U. Quote
mrelegazna Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 The U is what sucks, not that we don't say The University of Akron.Nobody else uses U.It's Michigan, not Michigan U. Texas. Not Texas U. Miami, not Miami U, Cincinnati, not Cincinnati U, etc. Why do people say Akron U? It's just Akron. Z.I.P beat me to it. I don't think anyone outside the Akron area ever says "Akron U." It's a local term to distinguish from Akron, the city, proper. Quote
zipsman18 Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 i do believe all state universities in ohio begin with THE, The Ohio State University, The University of Akron, The University of Toledo, etc... Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 i do believe all state universities in ohio begin with THE, The Ohio State University, The University of Akron, The University of Toledo, etc...The Can't State University? :screwks:Oh yeah... Welcome to the Zipsnation, zipsman18! Quote
Zipmeister Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 The folks at Cleveland State University say don't let the facts get in the way of your beliefs zipsman18. Quote
