More excited about Zips baseball than I have been in many years. I was a student when they won the MAc back in 1996 and never thought I'd still be waiting for them to do it again 19 years later. I don't know if it will happen this year but at least I feel like it is no longer a foregone conclusion that they won't even make the conference tourney.

Beating a team from the south two out of three to open the season is a very good sign in college baseball for a team from the north.

Zips take 2 of 3 in Charlotte. Now 4-2 on the season. Next up the Zips continue their tour of the Carolinas with a 3-game series at UNC Greensboro next weekend, and follow that with a 3-game tournament at Coastal Carolina where they get to take a shot at Michigan and Michigan State.

The UNCG series will provide a better challenge than the previous two opponents. I know Akron's pitching is up to the job. Just need to work a little on run support. Lots of baserunners being left stranded so far this season.

Akron is not a power hitting team. They hit a lot of singles and therefore leave a lot of runners on base. The pitching, as you said, is certainly above average.

I'm excited about finally being able to be excited about Akron Baseball!

Now we need to get more people out to the games. I know it sounds like the basketball thread but the baseball team really deserves better. And a much better field, but that's a different topic.

They do deserve much more fan support. It just seems that students in the northern US just don't connect with baseball teams like they do football or basketball. Some of that may be because there are fewer home games due to the weather but still there should be more promoting of the baseball team in and around campus.

I agree but it's probably tough to do too much promoting with the small budget the athletic department has to work with.

Say you did promote baseball successfully. How does it help when there's only room for about 25 people to watch the home games?

Exactly, get a legitimate college baseball stadium/field and then maybe people would come.

How much larger is the average attendance when the Zips play at Canal Park?

I agree there needs to be more seating, although I love being reclined on the hillside on those far too rare 65 degree sunny days.

UNC Greenboro cancelled their series vs Akron because they can't handle temperatures below 50 degrees.

That area in North Carolina got about 7 inches of snow today.

And has a lot of baseball been played there since November? :)

One could argue that, until the end of last season, baseball hadn't really been played here for more than a decade. :tomato:

It's currently above melting point in Greensboro, and they have an entire day to clear the field before the series was to begin. It's supposed to be partly sunny there this weekend, too. In all, it's a weak excuse.

Clear the field? This isn't tennis, you can't just squeegee the water off.

Attendance is lower when they play at Canal Park.

Zips are now 5-4 but interestingly each and every one of the four losses is by a single run. Does this translate to the team just being more competitive this year? Does it mean there is a problem at the back end of the bullpen?
