Dr Z
It appears the direction TB is headed is for more of a mobile/scrambling style quarterback.More than "appears", he has said so in public on multiple occasions. That is why some of us have been assuming the job was Chapman's to lose. First 3 are all 6'2. Eye test don't win gamesMy eyes are trained to observe more than height, but your right, looking at somebody doesn't make them play good. I thought Patrick Nicely looked like a Div I QB!?! I thought Frye did too. Looking forward to watching Chapman actually PLAY. Hopefully he studies his craft at least half as much as Frye did. Balsy
Though I'm bummed about this, isn't this good news for our offense? It (hopefully) means that Bowden is adapting his game to our league, not continue using a system that clearly hasn't paid off. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the focus of the offense was a "up-tempo" run by a pocket-passer. DW13 and KP16 seemed to be in the pocket almost exclusively. The more successful teams in the MAC, since Bowden has been here, haven't been running that system.

In fact, the best offense Bowden has had at Akron was with an up-tempo pocket passer.

(I'm playing the Devil's advocate here) That "most successful system" was 1-11 with a quarterback that ran it the way it is supposed to be, and was 10-14 with other QBs. Clearly something's gotta give. Either we hope one of the QBs we have will be able to run it, or we adjust our system to our personnel.I think Bowden's going that route. We've experimented with having a QB who can run the system (DW 1-11). We've experimented with a QB who can't really run the system the way it's supposed to be run (10-14). It's time for a change. But that change doesn't have to be too big does it?Bowden has said time and time again, he needs play makers who can extend plays.

The 1-11 record was not due to the offense. Certainly not because of DW13. If the '14 D magically coupled with the '12 O, the Zips go 10-2 last year because they would have beaten Ohio, Ball State, Blowing Green & Can't. All the offensive problems aren't just due to the qb, either. There are plenty of others that share in the offensive woes and need to step up their game.
K92
Also. . .For what it's worth. . .I had more fun watching the 2012 Zips go 1-11 than I did watching the last 2 years of 5-7 ball.

But the Pitt upset last year has to be one of the biggest in school history, I had a pretty good time at that game. The year before, we should have beat Michigan, I had a blast at that game. Tennessee game was fun for a half of football in 2012, but the rest of the season BLEW. I almost jumped off the top of the bleachers when we lost to UMass at home! I guess when I go to a Zips game I want to see some #MACtion!Looking back on that season game by game, there is some truth to what you say. There were some moments that my head almost exploded. . . UMass, the fake FG @ Toledo & the 2nd halves of BG and Can't, but the FIU, Miami and Ohio games were good shootouts that the Zips just came up short on. They had back-to-back stinkers vs. Northern and Central that I tried to forget about but thanks to you I am reminded of.
Balsy
I had more fun watching the 2012 Zips go 1-11 than I did watching the last 2 years of 5-7 ball.I generally agree with this statement, but only because the 2010, and 2011 versions of the Zips were just that bad. DW13 and Marquelo Suel were fun to watch. The Tennessee Game remains my all-time favorite Zips game that I've attended in person, above the Michigan game. But looking back on more than just the highlights, that team was HORRIBLE. ABSOLUTELY ATROCIOUSLY HORRIBLE. Thinking on how bad that team was compared to what we have now, it's a huge improvement. If we could get a QB like DW13, who can sling the ball around and whom has a level of confidence doing so, I think we're in business.UMass at home!Oh god...the UMass game... Zero against FBS competition? Over going .500 in OOC, a win over a P5 program at their place (and playing Penn State tough as well), and being in the running for the MAC championship up until the last few weeks of the season? K92
You enjoyed watching us win one game? Yes, the offense was very entertaining. Zero against FBS competition? Yep. Over going .500 in OOC actually exactly .500, a win over a P5 program at their place (and playing Penn State tough as well) Had a good time at both Pennsylvania games, and being in the running for the MAC championship up until the last few weeks of the season? Mathematically correct, but quite a stretch here since we finished the season out 1-5. Anyway. . . didn't you see my broken rose colored glasses? UA1987
Things of note on the pre-Spring depth chart:1) MTB and Horner are not on the two deep2) Newman Williams starting at T/E3) Boxen on two deep at NT4) Guiser starting at FS5) Lane at Rover6) Ritz on two deep at right guardThe offensive tackle spots still look weak to me. Bohan appears to have picked up his weight and is now on the depth chart at right tackle. By the way, Gauthney has been moved to the OL - another sign Akron's offense needs help here as is picking up a 400 pounder from NAIA Siena Heights. We need some more players on the O-line so lets hope Bowden and Funk can work some magic and pick up one or two blue shirts that can play tackle. Defense looks pretty solid. LZIp
Hopefully MTB not being on the two deep is like the Kincade situation. Moreso not there because of other talent, rather than himself. I doubt it's that way, however.

How has Ericksen looked at Center? Is the transfer LB from WSU in camp? Other than Chapman, how are the rest of the "Super Six Transfers" performing? Thanks for the update, 87. Blue & Gold
I'm not thrilled about Newman Williams at TE. He was a pretty dominant inside linebacker.
K92
I'm not thrilled about Newman Williams at TE. He was a pretty dominant inside linebacker.I figured he would step into the spot vacated by Mizell & that's why the addition of Daryl Monroe was a real head scratcher for me. Maybe Monroe's talent was just to great to pass on and now Williams has to fit in somewhere. Dunno. I wonder if we will get another WSU LB transfer next year or if Newman will get a shot at the position.

Zipgrad01
They may need his size at TE at the moment and will step into ILB later? He is 5'11. Who on earth needs that type of size at TE??? Unless they plan on lining him up as an extra blocker because our tackles stink, I really cant understand that move. He isnt the fastest guy in the world either. I noticed his lack of foot speed last fall when I was watching him play linebacker.

UA1987
Why not Guiser at FS (6' 1" 205, 16 INT's in high school, 2nd team PA AA and he has paid his dues here as a true and redshirt Freshman)? ... I'm sure Baggett, Cheek, Morrow, and Turner are going to be in the mix (Bivins is listed as a Rover) .
zipsoutsider
Bowden had mentioned some players playing both ways, including Williams:"What are you looking for this spring? Our No. 1 priority this spring- there are a couple of them. We want to find the best 11 players on offense and defense. We have to get competition between individuals, so that the best 11 compete and show up on offense, and the best 11 on defense. And there will be some players that will go both ways. Newman Williams played offense today—H-back and tight end—and he'll play defense as well. But we have to find the best 11. We could also be doing that with Jerome Lane. We have to find places to put the best 11."
