Captain Kangaroo Posted August 17, 2006 Report Posted August 17, 2006 The Zips Basketball Fall Classic golf outing is September 23rd. Sign-in is at 7am. I don't get it.The average Joe needs to get up at about 5:45 am on Saturday to get to Prestwick at 7am. Probably not a big deal...if you weren't planning on attending the Zips/North Texas game at 6pm that evening. Why was it scheduled the morning of a football game? By the time you're done with lunch it is 3pm. You'd need to hurry home, get cleaned up, the haul ass to the Rubber Bowl to have and shot at getting to your seat by kickoff. And, you'd be pretty freaking tired.By the time most golfers have completed 15 holes, I will be at the Rubber Bowl lot putting up the tents and firing up the grill. There are probably many others who would have participated if it were held at an alternate time. Quote
ZachTheZip Posted August 17, 2006 Report Posted August 17, 2006 Good thing I can't golf. There is no way I could be able to attend both events without falling asleep on the road somewhere. Quote

Why is there a scheduling conflict with the Zips football opener? Doesn't the Athletic Department oversee these things? So far I am not impressed with the new AD and the directions (plural as in more than one) the department are going. Quote
GP1 Posted August 17, 2006 Report Posted August 17, 2006 I don't know what the Hell is going on with everyone, but I've never seen so much bitching and complaining on a web board as I have on this one recently. Everyone is turning into a bunch of old ladies. We are going into what is going to be a great year for Akron sports and all some of you people do is cry about the most meaningless things.Anyhow, I don't like to golf so I try not to. However, I played in a scramble last weekend and tee time was 7:45. We were off the course at noon and the next outing started after that. We ate lunch, presentations were made and I was home by two o'clock.Does anyone think that four hours is plenty of time for the vast majority of people to go home, take a show, take a nap and go to a game? I do.Does anyone think that having an all Zips day might be fun for some people? I do.Is it really necessary to go home and take a shower after golfinig in the fall? I don't think it is. The air is so cool that you really don't sweat. Besides, your going to a football game and not a black tie charity ball.Does anyone think that maybe they can get more people to go to an outing on a weekend than during the week thus make more money? You're stupid if you don't think so.I hope you guys will start to be a little more open minded about what they are doing with the Athletic Department. These guys are far from perfect, and what they are doing now is not really all that different than what they have done in the past.Oh well, I'm going to try to go sell some football tickets. You guys just stay at home and think about the next thing you are going to bitch about. Keep tearing things down you nothing but a bunch of God damn crybabies.Have a nice day! Quote

It will begin at noon. 8 of them would have been excellent candidates to play in that outing. I stand by the statement: It is stupid to have two such events on the same day. There are 365 days in the year. To hold this thing on football's opening day will cost the U some $$. It isn't crying, it is a fact. I'm glad some can make it. I'm sure it will be marginally successful. But it could have been better.BTW: The golf thing is minor. A lot of the recent crying on the board is in response to some folks doing some really stupid, major stuff (season ticket mailing mess, $500 parking debacle, etc.). From what I hear, the stupidity hasn't gone unnoticed. Quote
fear the brown roo Posted August 17, 2006 Report Posted August 17, 2006 and i've never seen so much ass kissing by one poster in favor of everything the athletic department does Quote
iheartkarriker Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 I'm not kissing anyones butt, trust me..or don't. I'll be critical when it needs. But you really can't argue with GP1 statements. Nor can most departments of athletics. He says he's selling tickets you've got to admire that.I'll say that he does have better tact than I do. Brown Roo, I don't disagree with all your thoughts, I do believe you have good insight. However, I do lean towards his thoughts on this one. I am against, the name change of the student group. What M. Newhouse did for the Ak-ROWDIES was tremendous. I don't think it is necessary. I do believe that the person in charge will realize that sweeping changes do not need to be made.I am against having the golf outing on the same day, however, you can make both functions if you really want to. Is this different from last year's alumni day, no, not really. Quote
gozips19 Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 the point is that there are 365 days in a year and that they picked the home opener shows poor planning on the athletic dept. with 3 of 4 on the road it should be easy to move the date and if the course is a problem then they need to move locations simple as that.... akron needs as many people at as many functions as possible so why complicate things? fear the brown roo Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 hey karriker, i wasn't even talking about you but it's interesting you thought i was. Quote
Z-P Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 Whoa.............Let's not get the RNC mantra of "if you're not 100% behind me, you're against me" in here.............There've been a lot of ham handed boo-boos made lately. Some we all know about, some only few are aware of but nevertheless effect us all. And yes, some good things are happening too. However, guys like CK who've paid the price with at least 20 years of dedicated loyalty to UA athletics (including financial backing) have earned the right to post criticsm if they see it's justified, and done in a professional manner.............that's all he did.Far as I know, this is the first (save ZFF's original Blue Board) and ONLY place...............tech savy fans can offer their opinion and voice their loyalty to UA.I don't see that anyone's as a crybaby..........and can see pro's and con's to hosting KD's outing on the day of the home opener. Personally, I agree with CK, a different Saturday would have been better..............but it is what it is and that is that.Let's move on and direct our energy not toward each other......... Quote
UADavid Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 hey karriker, i wasn't even talking about you but it's interesting you thought i was. He'd have to be triple jointed to get into that position. Probably could make more money as a carney on the "freak show" tour. In my opinion, it is an oversite by the department of athletics or as the regular folk say, athletic department, to schedule these events on the same day. As a now former tailgater, these two events would definately overlap causing neither of them to reach their full potential. Unless you're the type that doesn't help with the tailgate, it takes a lot of time to get everything setup to enjoy a couple of hours before needing to tear down. Oh well, I'm going to try to go sell some football tickets. You guys just stay at home and think about the next thing you are going to bitch about. Keep tearing things down you nothing but a bunch of God damn crybabies.Have a nice day!Their is absolutely no reason for this type of rant directed at CK and anyone who disagrees with the decisions made with the apparent approval of the AD. Chill out Francis!Where is the AD? Where is the state of the zips letter? Why aren't issues raised on this forum reaching their desks, and if they are, why aren't they addressing them. All those on this forum, including gp1, are loayal fans of the school and program. Where is their loyalty to us? I have defended Mack R. in the past but now think he has to step up and show us he cares. I would think that someone who has attained this level of success has the ability to be proactive and see that problems are addressed. Does he have to micromanage everything? No! But he's the captain of the ship and needs to assume control. Quote
Charles_in_Charge Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 Actually the line was LIGHTEN UP FRANCIS.This event was on the same day as a home football game last year. It's mostly a hoops letterman event, not an attempt to go crazy for fundraising. Golf Tournaments don't make money anyway, they are there for good will. Quote
Dr Z Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 Frye would take his 340 yard drives and play in the outing, but he wants to tailgate for the home opener !?!? Quote
Captain Kangaroo Posted August 18, 2006 Author Report Posted August 18, 2006 Someone from the University was nice enough to give me a call and expain some things regarding the golf outing. As Charlie stated, it is more an "reunion" event for former basketball players than for the general public, although the general public is encouraged to attend. The event is set up for 144 golfers and it is hoped to sell out. It would take an increase of about 50% from last season to do that, but even at 100 players it is a pretty fair-sized event. Because the golfers are primarily basketball guys, the confict with the football game isn't too severe...some cagers will attend, while others don't give a hoot about football. To say the least, it is a transitional period for the University athletic marketing department right now. Hunter began in June, Mack has had 5 or 6 coaches to hire since he began only 8 months ago, in addition to all his other responsibilities. The "act" these guys have had to follow is a LOT tougher to follow than the one Waddell and Thomas followed...and it is now summer, when there's no University sports to debate. The only thing to debate is the quality and timing of University literature and parking programs. Once September 2nd rolls around, all will be well and the fans can shift their focus to the games, etc. A lot of the recent clamor will settle.Personally, I scratch my head at some of the stuff that's come through the mail lately...but EVERYTHING I've heard regarding Hunter and Mack is not only positive, but stellar. These guys need a full athletic year to get their plan in place. I'm betting a lot of stuff will make sense in August 2007 that seems pretty puzzling at this time. Quote

GP1 Posted August 18, 2006 Report Posted August 18, 2006 Maybe I should apologize to some of you for supporting the program regardless of who the AD is, but there is no chance of that happening. I think I say in my original post that "these guys are far from perfect". Maybe in a fit of paranoia, some of you missed that. At the risk of getting accused of being the Athletic Department's Mike Trivisano, I'll add this. The small fan has a great chance this year to get involved with the program and spend time with people from the Athletic Departmen on a 1 on 1 basis. They are all more than willing to talk to anyone about the program during the call sessions. You all could help with the Fund Drive. It's not like this has not been publically communicated to the masses or on this board. If anyone chooses not to participate, then you are missing a good chance to get in on the ground floor of something really fun and productive. Speaking of production, I've sold 167 tickets in two days, and combined ticket sales and Z-Fund donations are $2,246. What is everyone else doing to improve things? Call nights are 6-8 PM, Tuesday thru Thursday.CK is absolutely correct when he says that everyone should let some time pass before judging the new AD. Like all things, time will tell. I honest to God can't tell a major difference between Thomas and Rhoades. How could any of us, he hasn't been here long enough to make a judgement. The only area I would disagree with CK on this is that Rhoades has big shoes to fill. By the look of the attendance numbers the past four years, we weren't making great strides anyhow. The best decisions he made were actually the two no brainer decisions of letting the former football and basketball coaches go. All of us had that figured out, and if we had it figured out then it shouldn't have been to difficult for him. Mike and Mike were nice guys and all, but posting a state of the nation letter on this board doesn't make them brilliant communicators.Have a nice weekend everyone. Quote

That's your adjective. It does make them communicators and that was the point I was making. How long does it take to fire off a message to the board? Quote
