skip-zip
Listen and read how often any current advertising says The University of Akron along with Ohio's Polytechnic University and you'll get the picture that this is not something of little importance. It's nearly become a part of the University's name. That's a big deal. It's not just a meaningless word. I'll definitely call it "a mountain". a-zip
IMHO - I think everyone is getting too wrapped up around the "Polytechnic" identity or definition. I believe the move is to become Ohio Tech because it sounds bigger and will attract more students outside of NEO. I do believe there is a perception that the biggest schools in most state and that are more recognized nationally are ; University of "name of state""name of state" State"name of state" University"name of state" TechAkron is not sexy. Sorry….

skip-zip
I have to mention this. Has anyone seen the front page of the Beacon today? We had an enrollment drop of 2.7% this semester. Apparently that was "missed" by the University in the midst of bragging about their freshman enrollment figures and trying to associate it with their new "rebranding".If the freshman numbers were reported as being so good, and overall enrollment dropped significantly, isn't it a pretty safe conclusion that quite a few students in the upper classes left the University between May and August?Again, this is all far from completely playing itself out. But, that's pretty disturbing.

It was already submitted as evidence in the court of ZN.O!
Dave in Green
Thanks for sharing the negative part of the story. Here's the other part:... UA attributed the overall decline to higher admission standards and a larger than usual class that graduated last school year. ...... The school also said retention at the main campus — the number of returning freshmen — was 74.2 percent, up slightly from 73.9 percent last year and 66.4 percent two years ago. ... skip-zip
Hey Dave,The story IS negative, and should be. It's a significant drop in enrollment. If you read the article, the people at Ken+ tried to paint the same silver lining on their drop as well, but .5% drop vs. 2.7% drop is quite a difference. Actually, I only pointed to the article because you copied the University's "rosy" data earlier in this thread, which completely ignored anything that may not have looked good in enrollment data. So, please don't accuse me of only mentioning the bad parts of the story. I'm merely making you aware of the rest of what they didn't want to tell everyone
Dave in Green
Skip, the story had a balance of negatives and positives. You said... If the freshman numbers were reported as being so good, and overall enrollment dropped significantly, isn't it a pretty safe conclusion that quite a few students in the upper classes left the University between May and August? ... without noting what was clearly stated in the story that a larger than usual class graduated last school year. I understand and accept that the news is not all good or all bad. As long as others on this forum are doing such a great job of calling out the bad, I'll continue to focus more on the good to try to create a little balance here. If the balance on this forum shifts from bad to good, I'll spend more time calling out the bad. Focusing on what Dr Z just posted, it seems clear from UA's current official position that while changing the U's name was one of many considerations, they are now committed to retaining The University of Akron name with the tagline of Ohio's Polytechnic University. UAZipster0305
Check the link and read the sign:http://www.uakron.edu/im/news/school-of-law-expands-curriculum-to-asiaMaybe this is why UA has a branding issue...even in official signage and public releases by the University, its name remains ambiguous and inconsistent.Hey, there's my foot, I think I'll shoot it.
