Sergeant Zip
I have to claim ingnorance here, does anyone know anything about this? Someone asked me about this and I had never heard it before.Fast Fact: While serving as an assistant at Akron for 3 seasons, Tressel also received his Masters degree from Akron. coachtressel.com

sgm405
I got the ESPN College Football Encyclopedia last year for Christmas...what a great book to have by the way.Anyways, they list the following as "distinguished alumni" from Akron:Dan Moldea, author; Jim Tressel, Ohio State football coach; George Wallace, comedian; Karen Ziemba, actress
zip37
He was G.A. then Asst cosch w/Jim Dennison-- He is the son of Lee Tressel head coach for Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, his dad won the "Small College National Championship (by writers) in the mid 1960, Lee was a FINE man/coach, they may be the only father/son combination to win national championships, Lee T was also HS coach at Massillion (sp?). Jim was QB coach at Akron (I think) he also played QB @ B-W.With ball ammunition lock and load.
Z.I.P.
Okay folks, here comes another unforgettable memory of my days (which lasted 6 years) at Akron U (and please don't correct my localism ).As a sheepish 18 y.o. freshman in 1977 I walked into my first class -- a PE course in Tennis/Volleyball in late Sept, 1977 (we were still on quarters then) in Memorial Hall. The instructor was a young second-year running backs coach named Jim Tressel. I was more interested in putting the moves on the co-eds than in learning an overhead smash. "Coach" Tressel (the mandated title) on the other hand demanded complete attention to his instruction at all times. Not quite the drill instructor, but a clear disciplinarian in class, I got to know him out of class, and we played tennis a couple times at lunchtime -- he was more athletic than me, but couldn't run down my Guillermo Vilas-inspired topspin lob. You've seen the commercial of Roddick vs Pong? to me!Another thing I recall -- Jim was a guest on the football pre-game shows on WZIP, and predicted the results of small-college games each week. I got to correct him on one occasion though, when he had to ask the reporter -- "Where is Webber State, anyway?" He thought it (Weber State in Utah) was the home of the Webber grill. :lol:I don't root for his team, but I admire their coach. Jim's a cool dude. Zip_ME87
That is a cool story. Also, know that last year, in the days leading up to the Motor City Bowl, Coach Tressel said that he was happy to see Akron going to a Bowl game and that he wanted to see them do well (not sure if he said win, being "politically correct"). He said that he had connections to The University of Akron.
Buckzip
Back when Tressel was coach at YSU, he would always say great things about Akron. Then he would usually win the games.
ZachTheZip
I wonder what he will say when we play them next year? Mabye ESPN will mention it, or mabye they feel we would be too insignificant to mention that fact? Hopefully it will be on TV, because there is no way I'm spending $100+ on a ticket, even if it is just down the road.
Buckzip
We played a couple years ago. It was mentioned on the radio, but they never asked JT about it as far as I know.
ZachTheZip
OK, I'm having trouble getting Wikipedia to let me edit the University of Akron page to show this. I have provided documentation and everything, but they just keep reverting it to older forms. If anyone can convince them to put it on the web page, please do so. MDZip
There was some mention on the basketball broadcast about Jim Tressel joining Akron in some capacity tomorrow. What in the heck is going on?
zen
There was some mention on the basketball broadcast about Jim Tressel joining Akron in some capacity tomorrow. What in the heck is going on? Well he had consulting capacity for fb coach search, but that obviously ended. I can't see tW getting the axe right now. Maybe recruiting? ZipRoo
Sweet mother, I'd send TW packing faster than Rob Ianello can say "We'll defer to start both halves of the game!"
scottditzen
Sweet mother, I'd send TW packing faster than Rob Ianello can say "We'll defer to start both halves of the game!" That's almost funny. Almost.
chricollin
Sweet mother, I'd send TW packing faster than Rob Ianello can say "We'll defer to start both halves of the game!" Watch for Tressel to head development efforts to athletics at UA. He can't be hired to coach because of the NCAA "show cause" suspension. but he could help raise money. How about a new arena? Dave in Green
Not going there... What? You're not going to the new arena that will be built with funds raised by Tressel in his first assignment as a UA VP?
