Future, Current & Former Zips Representing USA 2016

Darlington Nagbe: Even before his game-winning goal, Nagbe was the best player on the field. His crisp passing and possession-style game completely changed the dynamics of the midfield. He completed all 33 of his passes and scored a goal. Fitting in with this team, his chemistry with Christian Pulisic and Bradley was outstanding. This was his coming out party and the lesson is that Nagbe should start for this team. Rating: 9

Of course, I'm a Darlington fan and agree, but I also agree with their assessment of Christian Pulisic... 17 years old... looking good for USMNT for years to come.

..."I mean, D's D," teammate and longtime friend Zarek Valentin said, invoking Nagbe's nickname, after Timbers training wrapped up on Tuesday.

"We've seen it all the time and everybody here knows it," Valentin continued. "We're maybe a little bit biased, especially me, knowing him for so long.

"I think he should be starting for the national team."...

...Timbers coach Caleb Porter, who coached Nagbe — along with Valentin — at University of Akron, talked about the significance of the event.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime tournament for many of these players," Porter said. He also coached USMNT players DeAndre Yedlin and Perry Kitchen, so the Zips are well-represented on the national team.

Porter was asked who he likes to win the tournament. He went with Nagbe and the U.S.

"Gotta go with the U.S.," he said.

Leaving his comfort zone, Yedlin finds himself

...That it took Yedlin until now to decode that skill shouldn’t be too surprising. Schmid pointed out that Yedlin played for a dominant college team, Akron, where he rarely had to defend for long stretches. In Seattle, his speed made up for many of his mistakes. With the U.S. at the World Cup, he was played higher up the field to mitigate defensive deficiencies...

...BC:
There’s a couple of old friends from your time at the University of Akron on this national team roster in Perry Kitchen, who now plays in Scotland with Hearts, and DeAndre Yedlin, who finished last season with Sunderland in the English Premier League. What’s that been like re-connecting with them?

DN:
“That’s been fun just talking about the old Akron days. And obviously, Caleb Porter coached all three of us, so just some good stories.” ...

...BC:
Growing up in Ohio, I know you’re a Cleveland guy through and through, but would you say you’re a Cubs fan or are you more of an Indians fan? Or maybe just for the day, maybe the Cubs?

DN:
(Laughs.) “I would say I’m more of an Indians fan. I’m not too much into baseball, but I’m always going to support the hometown team.”...

Perry Kitchen insists his best is yet to come for Hearts as he laps up Copa America experience with USA

“Whether I make it on the field, it is a fantastic experience to be part of the group, training alongside some experienced players and soaking up the atmosphere of a massive tournament.”

Darlington Nagbe is ready to play in Copa America semifinals if called upon

...Jermaine Jones was issued a red card against Ecuador, while Bobby Wood and Alejandro Bedoya earned their second yellow cards in the game. All three players will all be suspended for the USA's semifinal match, unless U.S. Soccer can successfully appeal any of the cards.

The suspensions could open up a spot for Nagbe, who could fill a void in the midfield as either a starter or an important late game substitute. If Nagbe plays, it might be the toughest challenge of his career as the USA is likely to end up having to face No. 1-world ranked Argentina.

"It would be great," Nagbe said. "We've been sitting here waiting patiently, but the group has been doing well, so there hasn't been a need for changes before, but now with some suspensions, whether it's me or other guys, we're all excited."...
