OU beat Buffalo last night (and pretty handily). The only path for the Zips to win the East now is they must beat BGSU at home and OU must lose at CMU. Both are possible. Then the Zips must beat the Bobkittens at OU. That's a tall order from the way things are looking now.

In addition they would need Miami to also lose one of their 3 remaining games (highly possible). At this point I'm more focused on just beating BGSU to get to bowl eligibility. Not making a bowl game would be a huge step back for this program.

I'll definitely be a CMU fan for the rest of the regular season.  Out of the 3 teams who could end Miami's chances, they are the one that seems most likely, and they play tonight.  That will hopefully get that scenario out of the way.   Then we just need them to win at home against OU on the 15th.

If CMU plans to get back to playing some good football this year, now is the time.  :P

Oh, one more thing.  I can't believe we are even talking about Miami  !!!

EMU and Miami are two teams that have vastly improved. They both seem to be where the Zips were in 2013.

EMU has wins over 6-2 Wyoming and 7-3 Ohio. They've already eclipsed the 2013 Zips and honestly if they were to play on a neutral field, I'd have to say they'd be favored over Akron given the way Akron has been playing.

I know that, but I still can't believe that we're talking about them having a chance to win the title.  That's not just an improvement, that's a pretty big one considering where they've been.

I agree with the second part.  They also have a loss to Miami, which we beat handedly.  They also got blown out by a not-very-good Missouri team.  I think we fare better against Missouri than we did against Wisconsin...Don't win the game, but fare far better.

And in Chris Creighton's career, he's progressing far slower than the Zips did.  They went 2-10, 1-11 in his first two years.  This year, his third year, they have taken the step to being 5-4.  The 2013 Zips, 2016 EMU I think is a relatively fair comparison.

They also played both Toledo and particularly WMU far more competitively than we did. Sure they lost to what looks to be an improved Miami team (a team that is currently sitting ahead of Akron in the MAC East standings...), but at least they didn't lose to a 2-7 Buffalo (who is worse) by 3 TDs and allow them set a school rushing record in the process. At the end of the day they have 2 wins against quality teams, meanwhile, Akron's best win is against 5-4 Ball State. That 2013 Akron team beat a bunch of nobodies.

List of 2013 teams we beat

JMU - FCS

Miami - 0-12 Worst team in FBS

Kent State - 4-8 Terrible

UMass - 1-11 2nd worst in FBS

Toledo - 7-5 Decent

My comment was purely on the basis that I feel EMU has already surpassed that 2013 Akron team and is currently better than the 2016 Zips. I haven't seen enough of Creighton to assess how good of a coach he is or isn't.

Whaaaaaatt?!  Miami beat CMU 37-17 last night

Wow.  CMU had so much going on earlier this year.  I had hoped that their loss to Kent was a fluke.  Apparently, they are in a free fall.

If Miami runs the table to end the season, and costs us that chance to play OU for the title, it would be a pretty bizarre scenario.  Especially after we already beat them and hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Good thing Akron played Miami early or there would be another L in that column. No MAC East again. Just hang on to go 6-6 and whatever leftover bowl. Lotta work to do before August 2017.

I'm still holding out the Zips get the monkey off their shoulder and beat both BGSU and Ohio.  May not be a bowl, but get the monkey off the shoulder for both teams now and go into 2017 looking to take it all.

So as it stands now, Akron needs a little help from both Miami and Ohio in order to get to Detroit, both are possible.

Akron's final Opponents:  BGSU and Ohio

Ohio's final Opponents:  CMU and Akron.

Miami's final opponents:  Buffalo and Ball State.

Akron needs to win out, and hope that Ohio drops it's game against CMU.  Miami needs to drop 1/2 of their final games.  ESPN has the CMU vs Ohio game sitting like this:  (though I haven't bought these % chances at all this year, hopefully it does have merit)

The answer is yes. In year 5 we have went full circle and are once again are playing like the worst team in the entire MAC...

Worst team in the MAC goes 1-11 or 0-12.  Calm down.  Come back next year and shoot the lights out.

A blow out loss to Buffalo and a multi score loss at home to BG. We are certainly playing like the worst team in the MAC and its not even close.

We got off to a fairly decent start by our standards, but have regressed mightily, meanwhile, other MAC schools have improved as the season has went on. Given our form over the past 3 games, I have no faith we'd beat any MAC team if we were to play them today on a neutral field. That's why IMO and evidently a few others feel the same we have regressed back to playing as the worst team in the MAC.
