Brookhart said he plans to use redshirt freshman backup quarterback Carlton Jackson more. Brookhart wanted to get Jackson, 6-foot-2, 195 pounds, from Pompano Beach, Fla., more action against Toledo, but that plan didn't work out.``I'd like to get Carlton in a series a half (this week),'' Brookhart said. ``He's impatient but he's getting better about it.'':bow:

Start him, give him the whole game. Look, this season is pretty much over in terms of reaching the post season and Getsy has not shown much of that swagger that we saw in Detroit last year (if any). Lets get this kid in there and get him ready to open the show in the Horseshoe next year.

Hopefully it's for more than 1 series per half.
I agree... 1 series isn't going to do that much, but it's better than nothing.
Me too...because it would mean we're killing BG. If the game is close, I doubt CJ sees more than 2 series. Unless:1.) Luke implodes. I don't see this happening against a team that just lost to Temple by 2 TDs2.) Carlton tears up the Falcons on his first possessionI like Luke. But I'm also interested in getting a preview of our #1 QB going into next season.

hopefully we will be able to look back in a couple of years and say "our star QB's first snap in his first college game resulted in him triping over his own feet and fumbling the ball. now look at him  !"

I wouldn't plan on seeing much of CJ for the simple fact that Luke was pathetic in Toledo and CJ still didn't get a snap. 21-0 in the first quarter and 35-20 with 1:30 left in the game are good situations to see what someone else can do, even if it doesn't effect the outcome of the game. Didn't see him last week in an embarrassment, I'm not planning on seeing him for more than 2 series the whole game this week.

I agree with the general sentiment that we should start looking ahead to the future, not just with CJ but anywhere else that makes sense during the remaining games on the slate. I am usually an optimist, so I hesitate even saying what I am about to say. BUT this seems to be the best place for Zip fans to vent SO....instead of "cool hand Luke", I'm thinking that "Fluke" Getsy is perhaps more appropriate.

I'm not sure why everybody thinks it has to be one or the other. Why can't they co-exist in a game plan the way Tebow does in Florida. Is it all possible that CJ playing actually may make the pocket better for Getsy thus making him better?

I'm pumped that they're finally doing the logical thing in playing CJ, but I don't think it will effect the pocket for Luke. CJ and Luke ran their 40's like 1 tenth apart (Getsy 4.9, CJ 4.8) so I'm not too sure it will make much difference, it's all gonna be in the way he handles the pressure from the D-Line. i.e. does he try to do the trademark "Fluke" Getsy spin move, or does he step up in the pocket, take a shot in the mouth and deliver the ball. To be a good QB you've got to have moxie, CJ didn't show it last time (given it was only one play), but he'll get another opportunity to show us what he's got this Saturday.

CJ may not be that much faster in the 40. However, he is much quicker and shiftier with his feet. Troy Smith at OSU is not that fast. He is just quick and has nice moves. Not saying CJ is TS, but there is more to it than 40 time.

``He's impatient but he's getting better about it.''i love the fact that this kid thinks he should be in there! the capt. said that you need to be a leader at qb and that is a perfect sign of a leader. i also agree with the last post that cj is very quick. i remember him shake a guy out of his shoes in the spring game. also his 40 in high school lists him at 4.6 i am sure its something between that and the 4.8 he posted this year. i hope he gets a couple of series in a row and not a one here one there so he can get a flow for the game. :screwks:

Yea I think that's probably the worst way to break a kid in... cause if you send him in there he plays his series and sees some things, then you yank him by the time he gets back out there the defense will have made adjustments and he'll have to get comfortable all over again. Good Call

Glad to see so many on this list want to see the "junior varsity" play. There have been many opportunities to get valuable playing experience for our team and for whatever reason Brookhart has resisted. At least he's coming around as is the rest of ZipsNation. I don't know how much influence Coach Pry had on play calling or game plan, but after the first few scripted plays, the offense falls off drastically. I haven't been too impressed with JD's ability to adapt during a game. Is anyone in the coaching box giving advise? It's hard to see what the D is doing from the sidelines. I think we need someone who can call plays from the box and free JD to be the head coach. PS. Please hire a special teams coach!

I don't understand why you consider them the JV. I truly feel the only reason many of the upperclassmen are playing is JD is loyal to the seniors more than he should be.There are a few starters on this team that I believe there is no chance there isn't somebody better than them, but they aren't playing. I know JD wants to win, but I also feel there some promises made, and that is the problem. Either that, or JD isn't the recruiter so many of you think he is.Also, there is absolutely no reason not to play the younger guys in a blowout game. These younger guys need to get the work in to get better.

You're preaching to the choir. I've been the most vocal person on this forum calling for more playing time for our second teamers.

GP1  Posted on Oct 16 2006, 07:21 AM    Keep Luke on the field and try to win as many games as possible. I don't buy tickets to go watch the junior varsity play. All of this playing back-up players to get them ready for next season is what high school coaches do when they have a disaster on their hands. CJ can get ready for next season in the spring and fall next year.
GP1  Posted on Oct 22 2006, 09:56 AM  Would anyone like to reconsider their vote? One day, CJ is going to be a good player for us, but now is not the time.
UADavid  Posted on Oct 16 2006, 11:07 AM  Most coaches do play backups and give them real game experience while trying to win games. The coaches who don't try to win, if such a thing exists, are unemployed. Backups are one injury away from needing to play. We're not talking about protecting a red-shirt for either player. I don't advocate pulling Luke in favor of either CJ, but if the game is a blowout either way, we could and should get a look at selected backups and give them a taste of what they need to do. This would also keep the regulars from getting too complacent. The backups would be pushing them harder in practice to get more playing time. I would certainly feel better if Ohio St. is not either QB's first snap.
Captain Kangaroo  Posted on Oct 16 2006, 11:23 AM  I think the topic of replacing Luke with a Freshman QB is ludicrous. Luke is the man. Period.
w00t Posted on Oct 16 2006, 11:46 AM  What the Captain said.
RACER  Posted on Oct 16 2006, 01:18 PM  i agree with the captn. we had the same disscussion last year about replcaing luke. luckily the coaching staff did not do that.
CK also included a lot of reasons why our offense hasn't produced and I do agree with that part of his analysis. I would still advocate playing Luke, but the guys behind him need playing time that Luke hasn't earned. Again, how much of this years inability is a result of losing Coach Pry?

I still avocate playing Luke too... no offense but Luke is STILL the starter because he's the BETTER QB. We need as many wins as we can get, so we at least have "a chance" at a bowl game. I agree that CJ needs to get at least a series per half if not more. But I also think we have to give ourselves the best opportunity to win and that is Luke regardless. You have to realize that a bowl game, whatever bowl it is, helps recruiting and with $$$. I know we need to prepare for the future, but lets not do that by sacraficing the present season.

After the loss against Toledo, we are not going to make it in a bowl. In the East:Ohio (4-1) with E. Michigan, Akron and Miami leftCan't (4-1) with Buffalo, E. Michigan and loses to CMU, ends 5-3Akron wins out, ends 5-3Could happen:Ohio beats Miami and E. Michigan, loses to Akron, ends 6-2Can't beats Buffalo and E. Michigan and loses to Ball State, ends 6-2BGSU loses to Toledo and Akron, beats Miami, ends 4-4CMU loses to WMU and NIU and beats Buffalo, ends 6-2WMU beats Miami and CMU and loses to Akron, ends 6-2, or beats Akron and ends 7-1NIU wins out and ends 6-2Akron wins out and ends 5-3 or gets beat by WMU and ends 4-4Either way, there is no chance we are making it to a bowl this year. There are too many teams that have won enough games and have enough sure wins left to take the spots.Point of this whole configuration is to show that Luke has not proven that he can carry a team to anything, whether it be championship or bowl. And I know someone is going to say "what about last year?" Answer to that is, he had amazing receivers that could catch horrible passes, he had the workhorse known as Brett Biggs making huge plays, and he had a defense that had amazing endurance. If anyone recalls the Buffalo game last year, in the 1st half, the offense had possessions that were 6 seconds, 15 seconds and 45 seconds long. AGAINST BUFFALO!!!! The catch in the MAC Championship was an amazing catch by Hixon, a sliding catch. Jabari had jumping catches in the Bowl game. These guys got Luke the stats he had. Toledo was 0-4 in the MAC, and we got beat by them. Not to mention that only 7 of the points we did score actual offensive points. He has not proven that he is the best QB we have. Truth is, it's just because we haven't seen anyone else. Noone can tell me that someone else couldn't have scored 7 (or maybe more) points against Toledo. And there's going to be that one person that says "what about the Miami game with CJ?" That was one play. If Luke got judged by his bad plays, DAMN!!! Until I see someone else prove that they suck more than Luke, I have no reason to believe he is the best we have. If that he truly is the best we have, God help our team next year!

Good call on the dudette!!! :D But I wasn't saying we won't be bowl eligible, I'm just saying that either Can't or Ohio will play either CMU or WMU in the MACC. The other 2 left out of the MACC will take the other 1 or 2 spots in the bowls accepting MAC teams. Put simply, we may still be bowl eligible, but no way we are going to get a bid!
