I was browsing Wikipedia and i found something interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Tire(the http:// isn't working for me right now)"Steel TireFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaThe Steel Tire was awarded to the winner of the annual college football game between the University of Akron and Youngstown State University. The trophy comes from the main products of the two cities; Akron for its rubber and Youngstown for its steel. The series was discontinued after 1995. Why is that a surprise? Every team the Zips played during those three years beat us. If we had played Riggs-Lamaar Beauty College in 1994, we'd have lost by double digits.

Youngstown State most likely holds it since they beat us last. Looks like this rivalry has a lot of tradition. Would be fun to bring it back for a couple years. Would help attendance. Did anyone notice the phantom attendance the UA would post after each game last year. There was no way some of those games had above 14,000. Especially the last game of the year. I hope we don't get a similar home schedule for next year.

Have you seen our schedule for next year?? It looks like we only get four home games and 8 away games. All home games are against MAC teams. Indiana is too chicken to play at the RB, and Army wants to play at Browns stadium and call it a "home" game for us.

That's an awful schedule! We're not gonna average 10K next season! And I don't like the idea of a "home" game in Cleveland either! I think I'd rather have a home game at Fawcett stadium! We'd fill it up, that'd give us some good pub with Stark County, and it's 10 minutes down 77, as oppossed to an hour north in Cleveland. Screw Cleveland, for our image and identity we need a sharp distinction between Akron and Cleveland.

I think the Army game at Cleveland Stadium will be cool. B) Home schedule next year will likely include Toledo - Great crowdCMU - Bowl team last season, and a great crowdK.e.n.t - Great crowd as long as no one is stupid enough to hold it in NovemberOU - Defending East champs and a great crowdMaybe we can get Temple @ the RB somehow?OSU/Indiana/Army/UConn is a nice non-conf for the Zips. Three of those are winnable. All those school names carry some national recognition if we win. Moreso than North Texas, MTSU, Troy, etc.

Mack is holding out and working on a home game for the last slot... the UConn game etc is nothing but rumor... The Indiana game is part of the new Big Ten/MAC agreement for games when the NCAA went to 12 games. They can't back out unless the Big Ten approves...I would call Delaney and tell him Indiana can go if we get Purdue, Iowa or better to come in.For the last time, attendance reported for last season's games was TICKETS SOLD. The NCAA allows you to go with either butts in seats ot tickets sold. Corporate sponsors bought blocks of tickets to make sure we hit. As for actual butts, if the Rubber Bowel (not a typo) is 1/3rd filled, that's 10k... most games if you squeezed everyone together, you could fill 1/3rd... the other 4-5k is not that unbelievable. Also, future schedule still says @ Army for 2007. Til it says different, the game at Browns Stadium is a pipe dream. We couldn't fill the Bowel for them before, what makes you think anybody shows in Cleveland?? Maybe local bases get involved? Miltary schools etc.. but I see a game with Army in Cleveland as a disaster.Oh and NO YSU unless we can't get anybody else to come here. We were dumb enough to play 1-for-1's with them for years -- while I was in school. It was their SuperBowl.. Our coaches and players never got that -- we laid numerous eggs -- I have more faith in JD than Faust and Owens but-- We have nothing to gain by scheduling YSU... even if half of Youngstown buys tickets.....

I bet you guys would want YSU's schedule.7 Home Games4 Away Games
not really. then we'd be playing a bunch of division II teams. Oh wait, I mean D-IAA. Same difference... You have too much spare time.
Two of those YSU games will indeed be D-II opponents. Like Clarion and Slippery Rock. Glad the Penguin fans want to pay $$ to see that.

Actually here's the schedule:9/1 at Ohio State9/8 South Dakota State9/15 Stony Brook9/22 Lock Haven---ONLY DIVISION II9/22 Missouri State10/6 at Southern Illinois10/13 Southern Utah10/20 Illinois State10/27 at Northern Iowa11/3 at Indiana State11/10 Western Illinois---7 Home Games; where we have won 14 of 15; likely means another trip to the Division 1 Playoffs. With Attendance likely to rise, don't be surprised to see us averaging 17,500 to 18,000 in 2007! YSU Fans want more home games, no matter who the opponent is.

We'd never play a home game at Fawcett Stadium. That place is barely half the size of the rubber bowl, and not in too much better shape. The Browns Stadium idea is to put the game in a marquee location. But honestly, I don't support it either. Less Akron fans will attend than usual (which isn't saying much), and the days of a military academy being a fan draw was over with decades ago.If we play Army, it needs to be at the Rubber Bowl.

I say that if indiana refuses to come to akron this season ( since we are already scheduled to play them at their place within the next few years) that we drop them and pick up youngtown state. This would shut them YSU crybabies up an we wont have to hear "akron is scared to play us" and all that other BS. YSU is a very good lower division school.

I'm not saying you're scared of playing us, but you did back out on the STEEL TIRE. You and I both know it would be an instant sell to our fans. Youngstown travels very well. 7000 down to PITT, 3500 over to PSU, 1200 down to Appy St. in NC.YSU-AKRON could bring 24,000 to the Rubber Bowl!BTW: The YSU schedule is set. YSU has 7 home games. 2008 is a possibility though, but we already have OSU again. 2008 is a year I-AA teams can have 12 games.
