74ZIP
i don't know what the coaching staff was trying to do with C.Jack in the 1st half Saturday but it looked real silly....with his mobility and Kennedy's love for running to the boundary, how about some triple or double option occasionally? with a big receiver like Jabbari and a blocking FB like the Tuze, run the option a few times and the D has to account for a bunch of people man on man...the QB draw stuff is too obvious and C. Jack doesn't disguise it very well...
InTheZone
It's too late in the season to start making that drastic of a change in the schematics of your offense. If they didn't think we had a good pocket passer, then they should've tailored the offense to what we have in the offseason. We've got to go with what's been hammered into place in the spring and fall camp now.
johnnyzip84
I do feel that there was one critical point in the game where the Zips could have better utilized CJ's abilities. It was on the last 3rd down opportunity for the Zips. I believe the Can't defense was showing signs of fatigue, so instead of running inside like we did, I felt that some bootleg action, with CJ getting to the edge would have probably picked up the 1st down and the Zips would likely have held onto the ball for the rest of the game. It would have been a fairly "safe" call too, with the worst thing to likely happen being CJ going out of bounds before getting the 1st. In that situation, though, I'd take my chances with his speed against a tiring opponent more often than not. I'd like to see more bootleg action with CJ in general because of the pressure it puts on the defense.
74ZIP
they aren't going to run an entirely option offense...but its really not that tough to run the option 5-10 times a game....the coaches knew Jackson was not a pocket passer...thats the mistake JD made off the top...he decided Jacquemain was his QB...he wanted a drop back passer like he had at Pitt and like he had with Getsy...he does not have the O line to protect a drop back game...yet...help them out...move the QB...you open the middle of the field eventually... We only needed a yard and I would have taken my chances with CJ's speed against the one Can't guy left on the right side of the line. skip-zip
In defense of the coaching staff, I think they have a plan for what they want to do, and the guys just aren't executing it very well right now. This brings you back to the age-old argument. Do you change your schemes from year to year to fit your talent? Or do you get your young players to adapt to a scheme that is already in place?I don't think anyone has an answer to that question. Personally, the one play I keep screaming for is where CJ runs laterally, fakes the handoff to the one slot back, hesitates for a second, and then drops back and fires the ball past the linebackers to a wide open tight end.It almost worked once to Poindexter in the first half. I'd like to see that more often. If that play becomes successful, it opens up both your ability to run the ball (linebackers won't commit to running plays quite as quickly) AND the perimeter passing game (safties have to guard the middle of the field). LosAngelesZipFan
I was thinking this same question-- CJ scored on a bootleg to the right. That's how they need to use him. They kept running an option formation but then either handing off inside or CJ would keep it with almost no apparent attempt to pitch-- doesn't make sense. They need to run the option at least a few times per game, and they need to roll him out so he has a clear running lane. Also, they have a solid receiver who can clearly throw (Jabari). They have a decent passer that can run (CJ). And they have at least one back that is a good receiver who has also shown the ability to throw (DK)-- sounds like alot of options and possibilities.Jabari just drilled that throw on the kick off-- doesn't that make you think. He's so big-- can he be used as a slot back some time, almost a TE? Just trying to think of things that might open it up a bit, mix it up. skip-zip
Maybe our coaching staff has been saving a Jabari throw for a critical situation, like we had on Saturday. But I certainly would have thought that we would have seen Jabari, with his quarterback experience, throwing the ball on end-arounds, or similar plays, several more times over the last couple of years. GP1
To answer the original question, I'd probably use him at quarterback..........
