Biggest Win In School History?

Amazing!!! That's all I can call the Lady Zippers victory over the Houston Cougars, one of the premier teams in women's college basketball, and a favorite to win the Conference USA title this season. Whoohoo! And not one word about it on the Zips Nation??? What's up with you people?Thinking back, I think most of us experts :D would agree that the biggest previous victory was the win over Indiana (and victory in their tournament) back about 1999 -- the season Cheryl Bowles and Co. stumbled into the Women's NIT. So, I am convinced Sunday was one of the two biggest wins in the history of Akron women's hoops. So how many of you were there to witness it? I stated in my last post (See BB Recruiting) that the Lady Zips were two years away from being MAC title contenders. I may have been off by two years, because Houston is as good as any team Akron will face the remainder of the season -- including Bowling Green! If Coach Kest's charges (who clearly learned from their trip to Hawaii and humbling defeat by Nebraska) play the rest of the way the way they did on Sunday, they can beat anyone and everyone on the schedule!Go Lady Zips. :champs: ??

Not to diminish the win, but Houston is not that good. They are 4-7 with an RPI of 186. The Zips are 5-5 with an RPI of 117. Coach Krest has done an amazing job and does deserve more fan support. I think the Zips will be competitive within the conference this season. I don't know if we have caught up to a sweet sixteen team like BG yet, but I think it is possible for the Zips to see .500 this year.

"Not to diminish the win, but Houston is not that good." Also: "Coach Krest has done an amazing job and does deserve more fan support." (by Zips fan) Zips fan makes a realistic comment. It has always pained me that the University of Akron women's program has been in the doldrums for I don't know how long. My three daughters all played high school basketball and my eldest walked on successfully at (may I say it?) Can't State. Notwithstanding our daughter's connection to Can't, my wife and I (both with multiple degrees from Akron), follow the Akron women - even attend their games from time-to-time.The future is looking brighter and brighter for the Lady Zips!

We did not all miss the game. I slogged through at least fifty miles (seemed like a hundred) to get to the game. Had to shop up in Macedonia for some MP3 players onsale at InkStop (Z.I.P. a new local chain based in Cleveland). I did attend the game. My thoughts will disappoint you. I thought Houston was a terrible BB team. Learned after the game that they beat Texas Tech (10-1) on the road.Wonder how that happened. I sure never saw it. Houston was one of few teams that managed to turn the ball over more than the Lady Zips. They were BAD.Houston relied on a sweathog sized gal in the post. Cobilyn Hill just bullied her way through out the game. Sad part was that she camped in the paint and not once wascalled for a three second violation. I yelled at the refs through out the second half about it. Soon Sarah Tokodi's clan picked up the lament. All to no avail. On one Houstonpossession I counted to "thousand and seven" when the Zips were whistled for a foul. Hill then made both ends of a one and one.Truth be told, the Lady Zips picked it up the last fifteen minutes of the game and took the game. Had the Ladies played like that for forty minutes they would have run theCougars out of the JAR.While Sarah won MAC East Player of the Week for her performance I was more impressed with Keyla Snowden's play. Keyla changed the game by lacing trey after treyincluding a couple from beyond LeBron's range. Those shots forced Houston to stop doubling Sarah. Which allowed Sarah to attack the basket. The Ladies are a far better team than last year. They do not need old what's her name who was the proto-typical selfish soul.If the new signees just match (reported to be even better than Jodi's current signees) the current players, the Lady Zips will own the MAC in two years. Three greatfreshman (Snowden, Murphy and Sedlack) have come in and complimented the two outstanding sophomores Tokodi and Riana Miller. These five have lit a fire in thesouls of Ashley Beal and Laura Stevenson. Great improvement in their play to compliment the "kids". I am most favorably impressed.I know its winter break, but, but, but, not a single AK-Rowdie in the end zones. Sure would have loved a game long chant of "lose some weight" for buffalo sized Hill.

:lol::lol::lol: I'm sure Mr. Kotter wouldn't appreciate this statement.Weren't we all talking about 70s shows on the Batman/Dwight Smith pot scandal thread? I actually wouldn't mind if this board made fun of the 70s for a couple of weeks.

Hey people. Hope I am not the only one watching the "mediocre" Houston women winning on national TV on ESPN this afternoon against a very good Tulane team. Houston is indeed a very good -- not a great, but -- a very good team which really plays well at the end of games (recently coming back from a 22-point deficit for the largest comeback in WCBB history). The Lady Cougars were down by 6 at halftime on their home court today, but came back strong to win going away by 10. As I said, this team is is good as any in the MAC, at least in terms of athleticism, and has three players who could be First-Team all-MAC in Twiggy McIntyre, Ty Jackson (double double inc 11 assists today) and the other guard, Obaze -- the sister of former La Tech guard Amber Obaze, possibly the fastest female guard I've ever seen.I have concerns about a young Akron team's ability to come out every night and fight the way they must to be MAC contenders this year, but on a given night, they are indeed capable of beating anyone. Look out BeeGee. :D Z.I.P.

I believe that Akron women's basketball will become a quite entertaining and productive NCAA sport.Jody Kest in just her second year has the team headed in the right direction. When coach Kest arrived there was a grand total of one division one caliber player. It takes time and good sales to get division one level recruits. A minimum of four to five years to field a division one type team. Thus far, coach Kest has recruitednothing but division one players. The current freshmen are mid-major talent. You need to watch them play to appreciate the improvements. It has been reported that next year's incoming class is her best yet. Coach Kest is now able to get taller players that previously shunned the Zips.Proof is measured not only in wins, but also reducution in turnovers, better rebounding, better shooting percentages, more assists, closer scores in loses, betterOOC competition, etc., etc.Give coach Kest and her staff a chance and your support.

Yeah, you're right pal. There's no real market for women's basketball in this country. Just ask Pat Summitt.
For 99.9% of the country, the only way a womens BBall game would outdraw a hai lai match in person or on television is if the cheerleaders were naked and giving away beer in the stands.

I vote that Zipmeister be hired immediately as head of Marketing.

Bring Pat Summitt to Akron and the JAR would be full. Unfortunately, she ain't comin'.The last couple decades of Zips women's basketball have been fraught with single-digit wins at year's end. 3-23 women's basketball teams draw flies.I have never been to a Zips women's basketball game. There have been infinitely better things to do with my time than travel down to the JAR to watch bad women's basketball. I couldn't watch Coleman Crawford's teams, so I certainly couldn't watch the Lisa Fitch & Kelley Kennedy-led cannon fodder. If the Zips women's team plays some championship-caliber ball, I'll show up and check them out. With all due respect to Coach Kest's present, improving squad, the day the Lady Zips compete for a championship still appears to be a ways off. Not quite as far off as the aforementioned naked cheerleaders, but a ways off none-the-less.

You should have just stopped right there. And who's Pat Summitt?
I know you are just kidding, but Pat Summitt is the John Wooden of women's college basketball. I generally don't like women's sports, but I do like to use the word "winner" to describe one. Pat Summitt is a WINNER if there ever was one.
