GoZips
Get use to this: Of the six bowl eligibile teams in the MAC Akron would be the LAST one to get a bid to any bowl. Why? Several reasons. The Zips are an unknown quantity when it comes to sending fans to a bowl game. Bowls want huge attendance. Shamelessly the MAC front office is willing to promote Marshall over Akron simply because Marshall "travels well". Bowls want huge attendance. Akron officials never carried through on their promise to promote Charlie Frye nationally. Thus, Charlie is still largely unknown to most everyday football fans. Bowls want huge attendance. Akron officials are taking a reactive wait and see attitude. Basically, they do not even want to go to a bowl game. Akron fan base can not be counted on to travel. Bowls want huge attendance. It comes down to this. If and only if the Zips are the magic number 56 available team the Zips will go bowling. You'll see pigs fly first. The Akron officials do not want to go a bowl. Bowls want huge attendance. Have faith in JD (he may be the new HC at Pitt next year). The rest of them ... they simply work at Akron U to collect a paycheck. They don't care like you and I do. Take that to the bank.

Take that to the bank. I couldn't disagree more. The University knows how huge a bowl berth would be for the program. They want it bad. The MAC office will not promote a CUSA team for a bowl. Marshall fans won't travel to see a 6-5 Herd team play UAB in Boise, or anywhere else. Ever see one of those non-New Year's bowls? They're usually in front of empty seats. Has the "Hawai'i Bowl" ever had more than 10K? I doubt it. TV want Charlie Frye, not Stan Hill I still don't see the Zips getting a bowl bid, but if they don't it won't be because The University or the MAC front office don't want it. Big Zip
Is there anything stopping Conference USA from stumping for Marshall? With Akron having Akron luck -- it is hard for me to believe it will happen for Akron this year. But, the logical side of me thinks Akron makes as much sense (especially with Charlie Frye) as any other of the fringe teams.

Guest ***GUEST_ZIPPER
"Go Zips" could not be more full of shit. Akron made the biggest push ever for Charlie Frye this season - the kid even has his own web site. I even got a mailing piece and I am an alum who lives in Texas. (Goodyear transfer from Akron). The school pushed for the team to be on television 5 times this year, which is how I have been able to get my Zips fix. The networks just don't come asking to put you on the tube, you have to psuh for it, move games to different dates and bear expenses. I know that the AD shelled out more than 90K to get the game on ESPN2 when Akron beat Marshall. If Akron does not go to a bowl it's because they have only one win against a team with a winning record and at 6-5 they have no track record for bringing a crowd, and that is what drives bowls. Guest Money
I agree. No one in their right mind would say that Akron is not getting the most for the dollars from it's AD and his staff. Charlie Frye is one of the finalists for the Johnny Unitas Award, despite having lesser numbers than he had as a Junior and Sophomore. Akron has pumped him hard from last Spring on... As for JD going to Pitt next year you are in a mighty big state of intoxication if you think a 6-5 first year head coach who got cleaned at Penn State is going back to Pitt. Dr Z
Have faith in JD (he may be the new HC at Pitt next year) I would LOVE to know where you got this information from. Is this your opinion?

GoZips
Oh to be blessed with that naivete' we call "fan". GoZips makes it a point to be on solid ground before he pontificates. Where I obtain my information is not for you to know. All you need to know (and you can verify this) is that I am correct far, far more often than I am wrong. I don't care if Jeff Long drove to your house and told you in person "don't tell anybody, but we are going to fire Walt Harris and rehire a guy that used to be here that we let go that just stole our back-up QB that has been a head coach for 1 year in the MAC to coach our team" You are had better lay of the mushrooms dude! GoZips
Dr. Z have you need of a grammer lesson? How do you get "will be" from reading "may be"? GoZips made no claim that JD "will be" the new HC at Pitt next year. Only that you can infer that JD is certain to be one of the prime candidates if the Pitt HC job opens. Since this particular matter has been posted on the Internet in several places, mentioned on TV and radio I think if is safe for me to raise the spector that it could happen. JD did a decent enough job in a trying situation to at least warrant a look by a selection committee. No one on a selection committee is going to whine about how JD "stole" anything. Rather, one could expect they would count in his favor his rescourcefulness and ability to attract prime players.
Guest ***GUEST_GoZips
I know everything and you know nothing. I am in the know and you are not. I am the only one who is right because I have been touched by the divine spark. GoZips can speak about himself in the third person because he damn well wants too. Gerry Faust is the best coach ever, even if he brought in convicts and JUCO players who could not read or write. Get a clue.

zipper
GoZips says "Have faith in JD (he may be the new HC at Pitt next year). The rest of them ... they simply work at Akron U to collect a paycheck. They don't care like you and I do. Take that to the bank." As far as Brookhart goes, please don't try to tell us your friend LO wouldn't have jumped at the opportunity to coach in the Big East. Brookhart's name might be mentioned but at this point it appears doubtful Harris is getting fired. I think you're firing blanks on this one. You reveal too much to have any credibility - like you mention on the recruiting site that Owens is a friend of yours. I know someone on the UAM staff and the fact is they GREATLY want to go to a bowl. What's your gripe with the admin anyway? Because they fired your buddy? Maybe you just collect a paycheck at your job, but I've seen the hours these folks put in - if it was just for the paycheck my guess is they could at least find something with regular hours and the same pay. I certainly get the impression they care about the kids and the coaches. What gives with you, anyway?
GP1
Nice work zipper. UAM did an outstanding job this year. The real question is what else could they have done? Probably nothing. What they did do worked well. We had 17,000 at the final game. Normally the final game gets about 2,000. Good work UAM. As far as the coaches leaving, I really doubt that. Even if they did, how could we hold someone taking about a $500,000 a year pay increase against that person. If anyone out there says they wouldn't take the money, they are a liar. JD would be stupid not to take the money. You have to make hay while the sun is up. Remember, we have things like UAM because this is a business. zipboy
The sad thing is Pitt would probably finish 4th in the MAC and they go to a BCS game??
Zipsrifle
I wonder how many times the BCS guys are going to have to redo this thing? I think there will be some very unhappy schools (The influential ones) and Bowls when this is all said and done.
