Is it as simple as this...

If Michigan State beats Hawaii, the Zips go to Hawai'i? Is that a 100% guaranteed statement? If I stay up to watch the Hawai'i game...MSU wins...and we don't go to Hawai'i, I'll "Go Marshall" (similar to "Going Postal," but instead you beat up things like innocent fast food drive thru machines or OSU football players).

Now that the Notre Dame players have voted in favor of going to the Insight Bowl, there are exactly 56 teams that both have agreed to play and are eligible to play in one of the 28 bowl games.

There are no eligible teams that can lose their eligibility by losing their game this weekend.

There are 2 teams that could qualify for a bowl game by winning this weekend -- Hawaii and Tulane.

The odds against Tulane are steep. Louisville has a great team with a great record. It would be a huge upset if Tulane won, but it's always possible.

The odds against Hawaii are less steep. They're 6-1 at home, and Michigan State is a terribly inconsistent team, capable of winning big against good teams and stinking up the place against mediocre teams. I personally rate the odds on this at 50-50.

If Hawaii wins, they will without question be in their hometown Hawaii Bowl. Then it would become a matter of whether any of the other bowls that haven't already announced team selections would pick Akron over any of the other teams available.

If Tulane wins, their huge upset of Louisville would probably make them a more attractive bowl team than Akron.

In the unlikely event that both Hawaii and Tulane win, Akron's chances of going to a bowl would be extremely low.

I'm afraid "guest" above gave a bit more info than needed to answer the Captain's question. The answer is just this: If either Tulane OR Hawai'i wins, Akron is almost certainly out of luck.

The only possible exception is that Tulane cannot play in the Hawai'i Bowl, as they would be playing a fellow CUSA member in UAB (committed), but there are few other options left. But UL will beat them anyway, so it's really up to Mich St.

The one thing I would say weighing in Akron's favor on Saturday night is that Hawai'i has been just as inconsistent this year as Michigan State. Their one home loss this year was to provisional Div 1-A Florida Atlantic. So it depends not only which Michigan State team shows up, but also which Hawai'i team. The local papers and radio are playing up the quote from MSU Coach Smith on MSU's website saying that he wishes he could be out recruiting now, rather than playing Hawai'i in a meaningless game. Let's hope and pray that his players are more focused on the game than the coach.

I'll be in the stands with the Spartan hopeful (having traded in my tix in the home section), telling them to "just win one game for the Zippers". George Zipp I believe was the originator of that statement at Notre Dame. Go Spartans! :rolltide: Yikes.

Tulane is going to get crushed.

I don't have cable, but being in Michigan kinda close to Lansing I don't think I'll have a problem getting the game.

Guest ***GUEST_Z.I.P.

Our anonymous "Guest" asks which parts of his answer might have been left out.

Answer: all those which fail to answer the Captain's Q: "If Michigan State beats Hawaii, the Zips go to Hawai'i? Is that a 100% guaranteed statement?

Correct answer of course, is simply "No. Both UH and TU must lose."

Then Zipsrifle asks what sort of kimchee I'm takin' from the "locals". Well, after nearly 20 years on this rock, I am now unofficially one of the locals mineself. And the "Yikes" reference I used is representative of my deep-seated ambivalence about this game, seeing as I am both an Akron grad AND now a UH grad student. I guess you could say I have all the bases covered. I win no matter what the result. However, If Hawai'i loses, the game draws 15k or less and is in jeopardy of not returning -- it can't exist without the home team appearing in it, as it has the first three years. Besides this, the local press hasn't picked up on the fact that the school that left them in the lurch at the last moment a year ago could be coming to play instead of their Bows (or Warriors that is) in front of Santa and a small gang.

That said, I understand the value to the University and City of Akron of a bowl for the Zips. It puts the program on the map nationally. And it sure helps grease the skids for that new stadium they're talking about. Maybe 30,000 seats WON'T be out of range if enough excitement can be created for the future.

So, Go Zips, er Spartans, I guess.

Of course, the simple answer is sufficient only if all the facts are known by everyone. For instance, at the time I posted my message, there was a question on this forum of whether Notre Dame players would vote not to attend a bowl. That question had not been answered on this forum when I posted my message, and the simple answer was not adequate without factoring in the Notre Dame players' decision.

Since not everyone reading a message thread will be familiar with all the background, it can be helpful to include pertinent facts. Different people will find different parts of such a message helpful depending on their level of background knowledge.

Yeah, what's with the harshness?

The guest gives a detailed answer and gets ripped for it.

The more info the better, says I.

Well, in our defense, when we lose, everyone comes over here to tell us we suck. When we win, everyone comes over here to tell us that the other team REALLY sucked or that we just got lucky. The planets align and we are all excited about a bowl game, we get $#!t about it. So, we usually are defending ourselves when "Guests" show up.

No need to be defensive with this guest. I'm on your side. May even register and hang around. I'm becoming a big fan of MAC football (great championship game last night!) and have lots of family in Akron. Now that the Zips have a quality coach making good calls, things are going to get better and Zips fans won't have so much to be defensive about. ;)

Thank you Dave for signing up, and in. Now we can tell you from all those idiots like the Marshall ambulance chasers. How does someone with that lack of good sense get thru law school anyway? I'm sure Marshall doesn't give law degrees, what cereal box did his come in?
