What is with you guys and hoping this is the end of Can't's success? There is nothing better than a strong rival to play every year. Not to mention are you that new to think this success is Christian's success and it wasn't started under Gary Waters. Gary Waters actually started this run with a win over the Zips in the first round of the MAC tournament in a year we beat them both times during the season. If Geno Ford gets the nod he'll be a solid coach at Can't -- he was a long rang bomber at OU and from what I remember was a fun to watch gutsy performer when he played.

Big Zip...you and I end up being on the same page on a lot of things, but I don't think I will mind if Can't becomes a weak program now. It really aids our ability to get to the big tournament, which is always the ultimate goal. But, I do sorta see your point about having a strong rival. With all of that said....I would think that the likelihood is that after 10 straight 20 win seasons, their program is now solid enough to withstand a coaching change. They've done it a few times before. In some instances, the reputation of the program means far more than who is the coach. And Can't may very well be to this point.Frankly....I'm surprised that after this string of success that Christian ended up where he did. I would have thought he would be looking much bigger than that. It's probably not a good sign that a MAC coach with a consistent record of success over a decent period of time appears to only be this vaulable on the open market. On the other hand, the Dallas - Ft. Worth area is really huge and growing, and he might be banking of future success, fan support, and a new lush arena in the future. The opportunity to create a great program in the right area is a motivation to some coaches, and this may be the case here.

What does it say about the MAC that a basketball coach from Can't moves to TCU (a Mountain West school) and nearly doubles his salary $250,000 to an expected $600,000. Does the MAC ever have the opportunity to move to that level or will we continue to be a feeder league for non-elite conferences. I think the fact that Christian moved to TCU says a lot about the MAC. When Heath left he went to Arkansas and when Waters left he went to Rutgers -- have we now moved down a rung on the conference hierarchy? Is the conference getting worse? How do we get out of the conference if that is the case?

It seems that they go through a new coach every few years because they hire good coaches. They have amways found a good replacement. This time will probably be the same.

Like most Zips fans, I hate Cant State. That being said, I congratulate Jim Christian for his tenure at our hated rival where he excelled. I wish him success at Texas Christian. May he have the courage toschedule both Akron and Cant in the near future. As a victim of the snubs the MAC has repeatedly had over the years by former MAC coaches perhaps he will reversethe tendency to ignore the MAC as so many others have when they "moved up".It is in Akron's best interest that Cant State and other MAC schools continue to be strong opponents. The success of the conference depends on solid competition, notwimpy, whiney also rans. Akron's role is to get better. We certainly have a coach capable of elevating the Zips. In fact, Keith Dambrot has done just that.Several weeks ago the Beacon Journal beat writer criticized Akron as a team that played well enough to get to the big game, but could not finish. This year's Zipsproved him wrong. While the Zips went down in flames to what was then an outstanding Can't State squad, they recovered in the NIT. Florida State on the road was a hugewin for the program. The solid performance again on the road at UMass proved that coach Dambrot was right. The Zips can compete with anybody. And, they will.

I really don't see why would you want Can't's success to end.I would love to see them ranked # 2 in the nation as long as we are the #1. We play in the MAC and we are not going anywhere in the next 10 years so let's put that topic to rest.Do you want to be like Niagara or Austin Peay? or do you want to be like Xavier and Temple? The first two regularly win their conferences and go to the dance. However, they play in crappy arenas, 3000 supporters at best and a boring season. They get their nuts kicked in the first game of the tournament. The last two (Xavier and Temple) also win their conferences and go to the dance. But they also get to enjoy the whole season. Playing in great arenas with a great fan suupport and they get to compete in the tournament. The difference between the two choices? the competiteveness of their conferences. Here is the question you need to answer: do you want the zips to improve and be the top of a good MAC conference ? or do you want the MAC to suck so that we sit on the top just because we suck less than the rest of them?

There are other coaches available also that the Leaking Urnal did not mention, Ben Braun got canned atUC Berklley, he might be in the running. With ball ammunition lock and load and of course :screwks:
Cal still owes him $1mil for next year. I doubt he would take a lesser paying job and give up the $$$.

Ben is available, however, Geno was brought in specifically to inherit the job when Christian left. Kennedy is just doing his job by saying the position was going to be a nationwide search. He already has his coach.
Elton Alexander had a very interesting reference to a potential new coach in his article about the transition at K-S-U: North Carolina assistant and ex-Fla St. HC Steve Robinson! How about bringing Robinson to NEO -- and along comes his former FSU and Tulsa ass't coach, and admitted best friend. Anyone remember Coleman Crawford? :DI think THAT would help jazz up the rivalry. Whatta ya think?

No kidding .. who cares if the conference blows goats .. better for the Zips to dominate and keep the bid to themselves. I don't really believe Can't State will fall fast, but it wouldn't break my heart if they never won another game.Do people really think that Gonzaga is up nights worrying about why the league they're in only has 1 or 2 good teams (this year being different, I know)? No .. they own the WCC bid and that's the way they like it.The Zips are working on their business .. the rest of the league is irrelevant.Go Zips!

Amen. I'll trade in the rivalry with Can't for regularly winning the conference and getting an NCAA bid. The reason: no one outside the Akron-Can't region cares...the game barely gets any media coverage from Cleveland. It has never been broadcast nationally, which is what the NCAA bid is all about...NATIONAL EXPOSURE. And besides, who wouldn't want to stomp Can't with every opportunity we have?

Absolutely. I could personally care less if Can't crawls under a rock and dies. Become dominant in the MAC, stay that way, and give a rat's about everyone else. Let the Can't death spiral commence ... :chair:
