    Sullinger, Bass and Hayes.

Bass went to 4 high schools and is now on his way to his 3rd college in 3 years.  That's the kind of guy you want on a team.

I thought PCCC had a lock on Sullinger with his uncle on the staff.

According to #sources I spoke with last week, Bass and Hayes were locks to be gone. Sullinger was as well, but began to reconsider during the run. Allegedly, his uncle may not be sticking around any longer for one reason or another.

  2. John Groce has coached 11 seasons of MAC basketball

He has won at least one MAC tournament game in each of those seasons (sans 2020, N/A). In the 10 MAC tournaments he has coached in, he has won 40% of them. His highest rated team at Akron was not able to participate in 2020.

    Bonkers.

No MAC teams in the NIT or CBI.  Cleveland State is headed to the CBI.

Do you old timers remember when Creighton came to the JAR in 2011?  A big Zips win, 76-67 led by Brian McKnight and Nikola Cvetinovic over the Blue Jays led by Doug McDermott who went on to the NBA.

That season, the Zips lost their final 2 regular season games, beat Miami in the quarterfinals, and beat Kent by 1 in the championship. Sounds familiar.

  4. There’s luck involved in just about every championship. 2021, Ohio had COVID at the right time and could rest up. 2022, Zips benefit from Sendy running a trash program. 2023, Kent is lucky Ali Ali gave Butler a shot. 2024, Kent lucks out with the Bass injury before one of their own morons strikes again, and Tribble, who blew FTs in his final game at the JAR, cans the last 2 to win it. Shammah Scott went a month without hitting a 3, then hits the most clutch 3 of the MAC tournament.  Make or miss game. Brian Walsh, Ronaldo Segu, Jaylin Hunter, Jalen Sullinger. IYKYK.

Rivalry aside, I think Sendy is a very good coach. If you would've told me back in December that Payton would get hurt and they'd still make the MAC Championship (and almost win), I would've called you crazy. If they can keep their core and add a little bit of talent to it, they'll be a contender again next season.

Reggie Bass getting hurt was the greatest thing to ever happen to that team. He and Emoni Bates are the biggest losers to ever play in the MAC. It ain’t even close.

Mike Davis who brought his Detroit Mercy team here a while back and "daddy balled" his kid to stardom got the heave ho today after his Titans went 1-31 on the season.

The only team they beat, IUPUI, fired their coach yesterday

  7. You can talk about Thornton and Tavari, the backup point guards, until you’re blue in the face. And I preface this by saying I love Greg Tribble with all my blue and gold heart. But he would be the first to admit that in these past two weeks, his game has not been close to his standards. Missing key free throws, playing sub-par defense, taking too many out of control shots, all far bigger issues. Again, he would be the first to admit these things.

  8. Ever since the flight to JMU, it’s looked like hammering a square peg into a round hole. Ali and Freeman can typically get their looks on command and cash in enough to get the job done. Sans Ali’s 3pt shot which has mysteriously vanished. Even with a better roster than pretty much everyone in the league, the Zips play to their opponent’s level. It’s hard to explain. They just mentally don’t seem as locked in as they were earlier in the year. Everything has gone backwards.

  9. 1,583 days ago, Greg Tribble and Ali Ali suited up for their first regular season game for Akron, against Malone. Was Freeman with the team yet? He played later that month. Anyway, Ali started and played 19 minutes, Tribble played 14 minutes and both made an impact in the box score.

Today, all 3 will play at the JAR for the last time. The last home game is always bittersweet, but this one is far and away the most I’ve ever felt that before. These 3 guys have been in my life longer than some of my close friends. I’m going to enjoy every second of tonight. Hopefully a comfortable win. These guys have done so much, and still have a lot on the table. Go Zips!

What is the parking situation at RM Fieldhouse for the MAC tourney? Does their parking garage fill up, how much does it cost, and are there other perhaps cheaper options reasonably close by? Or would using the RTA buses be a wiser option?

$20 per session in the deck I believe. I’ve never had trouble getting a spot. I’m sure there are cheaper options around, but probably none more convenient. If you can get free parking at the casino you could try that.

So if we win, do we cut down the nets?

In 2020, we cut down the nets by just clinching a share, so I would imagine so. Don’t want to get into a situation where you wait til you officially lock up the 1 seed and have an awkward empty gym party like the 2017 team. I believe @NWAkron was our reporter live on-site for that event and the vibes were atrocious.
