ZachTheZip
6'/2012/PG/Carmelo Betancourt via San Juan, Puerto Rico has committed to the University of Akron. Betancourt plays on the 19U National team. Was seeing interest from UCF, Georgetown, Villanova, Miami FL, Texas A&M, Utah State, Duquesne, and Virginia. A&M said that if they landed him it would be "a major coup". Story on Betancourt from May.

Zip Watcher
Seems like he's going to prep-school it this upcoming year, and join the Zips next season. I believe AA did the same. I wonder if their are any PR bigs in the stable?
ZachTheZip
Attending a prep school would take the place of a redshirt season. Details on commitment. I like the comparison to JJ Barea. I hope he lives up to or surpasses it. the prep school he will attend is possibly the College or Southern Idaho.
Captain Kangaroo
Attending a prep school would take the place of a redshirt season. He could still redshirt after the prep stint. I don't see it happening, but going to prep school doesn't cost him any eligibility. He seems to really be into Akron, unlike Dylan Ennis. I don't see Melo backing out of his commitment. Great recruit. Can't wait to see him play.

He graduated high school and will sit out a year before playing. He gets a year to develop and then plays in 2012.

What I love about that article is the quote from the coach that wants to create a pipeline of players from Puerto Rico to Akron. That would be a big help for Akron and I think AA being able to come in, play significant minutes and contribute as a freshman played a big role in that. They see that Akron can compete, make the NCAA tourney and offer immediate playing time and exposure when they may not get that at the high majors. Excellent. Quickzips
Puerto Rico is quickly gaining a reputation for putting out some pretty stout little PG's. If Akron becomes the pipeline for these guys I have absolutely no problem with that. It would be pretty nice to see the Zips become to Puerto Rican basketball what St. Mary's has been to Australian basketball. If 'Melo is legit, and Abreu continues to progress it will go a long way to entrenching that pipeline.
Zip Watcher
I wouldn't mind opening the pipeline a bit more for the second coming of Ramon Ramos also. Doesn't need to be limited to PG's does it?
zip37
He's going to the same prep school as AA. Each One Teach One, at one time the Geography Dept @ U of A had a pipeline to PR.

All I recall is that it had a pipeline FROM India! And it took a certain UA RB to complain to dept. officials that no one could understand one instructor. But that was about 1980. Z.I.P.
Alright!! Now I see where Betancourt played (at least his senior year of) high school ball -- at the legendary basketball academy/factory of Montrose Christian, under their legendary coach Stu Vetter. I would have seen Carmelo play last December (I actually may have seen him in 2009), but this was only about the third time in the past fifteen years that Vetter didn't bring a team to the I'olani Classic here. Here is a little write-up about Carmelo the Younger. My only problem with it is the line about his family "visiting America for the first time." Hello! Puerto Ricans are American citizens! Does anyone have his stats? All I could find was what seemed to say he only played in two games this season. Is that right?

While in California I follow St. Mary's Their success has a lot to do with the Australia pipeline they have developed. 3-5 players usually on the team from down under. It would be great if we developed something similar. I wish we could steal St. Mary's relationship with Australia....the Roo connection would be a good fit. Hilltopper
Hoya Talk Carmelo made his name playing for the Puerto Rico team at the 2009 FIBA-Americas U-16 tournament. He averaged 18 pts, 3 rbs, 2.7 assists and 2.2 steals. Last year, as a junior, Carmelo was the point guard for Colegio Adianez, a local high school always in the hunt for the State Championship. He was invited to represent PR in the 2010 Jordan Brand Classic (International) and was one of the starters. Following the tournament, Montrose and St. Benedict’s extended invitations to Carmelo. Looking for better competition and greater exposure, Carmelo transferred to Montrose Christian. I hear he’s giving Ty Johnson some hard workouts. U.S. scouts and college coaches compare his game to fellow Puerto Rican and Dallas Mav J.J. Barea. Carmelo looks up to Steve Nash, the Heat’s Carlos Arroyo (also from P.R.), J.J. Barea and other similar players. He’s a hard working, fearless 5'11' floor leader with very good basketball I.Q., quickness, handle, passing ability, shot and defense. One facet of his game that Wallace lacked is penetration. He’s stated that he’s looking forward to improving his all-around game. Carmelo follows in the steps of other excellent, but relatively short Puerto Rican guards who had great college careers, like NBA'ers Barea, Arroyo, Can't State's Denis Clemente, UTEP's Filiberto Rivera, and UM's All-BE Freshman/All-ACC Guillermo Díaz, who left early and was drafted by the Clippers. Top programs like Memphis, Villanova, UM, St. John’s, UVa and Georgetown are interested. I'm guessing more will get involved this season. As for how he would fit in, I’ll leave that to JT3 and staff. But, if his shot is as good as JW’s, added to all the qualities stated above and great penetration skills, then grab him as soon as possible. He's played in three major FIBA tournaments, the Tournament of the Americas twice. Averaged 18PPG in 09. He gets a lot of free throws -- 43 in five games in the 09 event. I would call him a major slasher! Also, the Montrose Christian site said that he had a 4.0 GPA. Why is he going to a prep school, again? Dave in Green
Lots of good stuff to be found about Betancourt in a Google search. Saw a comment that Betancourt is a lot like VCU's Joey Rodriguez but plays more under control and has a better outside shot, and we all saw how far Rodriguez took VCU. Saint Mary's also took a trip to the sweet 16 in 2010, largely due to the play of their Australian pipeline players. This leads to the inevitable question. Would you take a sweet 16 run from our team if the tradeoff was that we had to lose to Can't? What if it meant losing to Can't multiple times? dgnb
Carmelo is a special point guard. To correct a previous poster, he did not play in only a few games for Montrose this year. He played in all of them. In fact, he was the key cog in games against nationally ranked teams like Oak Hill and Arlington Country Day. However, what he does, doesn't always show up in the stat sheets. He rarely is concerned for his numbers and can go whole games without shooting. He was featured on the Fox College Sports tv show, Hoops Academy this year, which went behind the scenes at national champion Montrose Christian for the whole season. Check it out:www.Hoops Academy.TV
