This popped up on my Facebook feed today. First time I have seen it.

It isn't, students are in school for...you know, school. Akron's also still mostly commuter school. There's never been a good engagement with students on campus or the commuters; it amounts to a sign that reads "Game Today""get in free with Zipcard", I doubt any random student would know the record of the Zips because they're not engaged at all. But on a side note: Zips should do this for Football. Attend 3/6 home games and you get an entry into a drawing for free tuition. Attend all 6 you get 3 entries or something like that.

And give them credit when it's due. Beating KSU is always a good thing.

I think it's time to put away the notion that teams are running away from playing Akron. The fact is it just doesn't make sense for them to come to the JAR. Great Akron could cut them a check for 100K, which Akron unlikely breaks even on. Minnesota counters saying they make 400k off a home game. They will pay Akron the 100k and keep 300k for themselves. The reason Minnesota would accept losing money to play a road game would be exposure. Akron really isn't going to give that to them. Now if Akron was able to go on a 3-4 year run where they made it past the 1st weekend in the NCAA tourney a few times, some teams might begin to listen.

I think having the home games is a big deal even if the teams we play aren't that great. All that travel and some big losses thrown in there and some injuries just doesn't seem worth it. I know the injuries can occur at home, too. But what I gathered from Dambrot's interview last night is it just doesn't sit right with him how it plays out. Our team is flying (usually commercial) all over the country while these "bigger" schools get to buy us off and stay home and rested. And Gonzaga has their own jet to get them where they need to go.

More Ionas and less Coppin State, basically. A few games against a Nova or Arkansas in a tipoff tourney is fine if the rest of the OOC isn't so bad.

Marla wrote a nice article on Dwight awhile back. The best individual defensive performance in an Akron uniform was put in by Dwight Smith against Kent back in 2000. Because of the cold weather, many probably stayed home. I was lucky enough to see two of the best NFL defensive players in the last two decades that day, Smith vs Harrison. Who would think at the time that both would go on to score TDs and win a SBs!?!? "MACtion before there was #MACtion"™
