Tom Wistrcill Resigns. Larry Williams hired.
Dave in Green replied to zippy_ua_00's topic in Other Sports
Here's a documented fact about what Larry Williams had to deal with as AD at Marquette: A Marquette assistant basketball coach who happened to be a best friend of head coach Buzz Williams was caught for an NCAA violation and repeatedly lied about it to AD Larry Williams. Fact is there was some dirt around the Marquette basketball program for Larry Williams to clean up, and those who thought he shouldn't have been so diligent in doing his job didn't appreciate him. Marquette assistant dismissed, Buzz Williams out one game Fortunately we don't have those kinds of problems at UA, so the next AD will not need to be tasked with cleaning things up. If I have any question about Larry Williams it's how he would adjust from the major financial resources he was given to work with at Marquette to what's currently available at UA. I have no doubt that George Van Horne is experienced at dealing with limited resources. -

bengalboardgg, I don't disagree at all with your assessment of George Van Horne. All of my direct experience with him and all I've heard about him from people I trust is positive. I believe he'd make a great UA AD. But you don't have to demean Williams to enhance Van Horne's status. Reading the article you linked to, Williams was hired at Marquette by Rev. Scott Pilarz for a very specific purpose: Pilarz hired Williams as AD and also appointed him a VP reporting directly to President Pilarz. Williams was told by Pilarz that one of his primary jobs was to clean up the program, and he followed the direct orders of the man who hired him and who he reported directly to. The real tension was between the directives of Pilarz executed by Larry Williams and head basketball coach Buzz Williams. The writer of the story you linked to even has high praise for Larry Williams: Also, Larry Williams was not fired by Marquette. He resigned, as documented in this story, which also offered high praise for Williams: -

This is going to heat up, so everyone should get ready to have their cool tested. Remember that the few fanatics pursuing this in bad taste do not represent the majority of concerned citizens who only want to be assured beyond a reasonable doubt that justice has been served for all parties. -

If any of the candidates are withdrawing because all the recent stories about UA have convinced them that the AD job is too tough for them to handle, then I won't miss them. I want the next AD to understand he's taking on a tough job but has the self-confidence to believe he can turn things around under difficult conditions. Give me someone looking for a big challenge, not someone looking for a comfortable position. -

Larry Williams seems like a well-respected ex-Notre Dame and NFL football player (drafted by the Browns) who did well in his brief (less than 2-year) term as AD at Marquette. His only other college AD experience was as director of athletics and recreation at the University of Portland. Marquette and the University of Portland are private Catholic schools that both disbanded their football programs more than 50 years ago. So as far as I can see he has no experience running an athletic department with a football program. But I really like his philosophy on college athletics as described in this article. -

Since you're probably including me in your "everyone" reference as evidenced by your misinterpretation of my previous post, I'll try to make it a little clearer. The point I was making was that attendance would be a more important factor to the RubberDucks organization in trying to partner with them to use Canal Park than it would be if UA was just going to continue using an on-campus facility with minimal seating and amenities like LRJ Field. Attendance would be just one of many factors and far from the most important one if using a first class facility like Canal Park was not being considered. With that said, please exclude me from your group of everyone who keeps throwing up attendance as the only factor.

Wow, hard to believe UB will allow Moss to remain on campus after a second instance of theft. You'd think he would have been on probation from the first instance. Unbelievable to think a player with a real shot at earning millions as a pro could be so stupid.

It's hard to casually dismiss well-documented, scholarly critiques. Chris Horne's investigative process confirms some things I found in my informal internet research, but is much more thorough and deeper than mine. I wonder if UA will add a rebuttal to this in their new Just The Facts section? -

Dave in Green replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
We all need to be aware that Brian Bell is a hot topic in some quarters, and as we discuss him here ZipsNation moves closer to the top of the list in a Google search. This means that people interested in the case are going to be landing here, reading what we post and perhaps even adding their own comments. Reading this thread will reveal that his name is on the Zips football roster, and it should be noted that his family was not publicly releasing information on where he was going to school to protect his privacy. With that in mind I think we need to be careful not to make silly remarks that people with questionable intentions might run with. Major news sources have published no verified evidence connecting the Bell family to what was ruled the accidental death of Kendrick Johnson. There are, however, a number of irregularities cited over the local investigation that are not necessarily related to the Bells. For example, when Kendrick's body was exhumed by his family for a second autopsy, they were horrified to discover that all of his internal organs had been removed and disposed of, and his body stuffed with newspaper. Imagine the shock to a family, friends and community of discovering something like this about a loved one. Combined with some other irregularities in the investigation it shouldn't be surprising that some are calling for a more thorough investigation by reliable authorities with total transparency. Having a federal grand jury investigate may be the best thing that could happen for the Bell family. They continue to be relentlessly hounded by those who question the results of the local investigation. Those who believe something is being hidden will likely trust the results of a federal investigation more than a local one. So if the federal investigation agrees with the local one that the Bell family is totally unconnected to the case there's a strong likelihood that those currently hounding the Bells will turn their attention elsewhere. In the meantime, it appears by virtue of his name being listed on the football roster that Brian is a member of the Zips family and deserves our support and protection from harassment. -

One of the best things about ZipsNation is that it doesn't regularly descend into political mud wrestling, which is generally polluting large swaths of the planet. People have different political views just like they have different religious views. Many get along just fine despite their differences because they show respect for each others' personal beliefs. Problems arise when some become so obsessed with their beliefs that they try to blame all the world's problems on those "others" with different beliefs. Keeping ZipsNation a politics-free zone will help avoid those problems. -
