Interesting first post considering the tOSU firefights that have gone on here recently, as well as over the years. Anyway, welcome to ZN.O. I think you're about to get a rehash of the same points made here on this subject that have been made many, many, many, many, many times over the years.

Akron September opponent's coach in hot water?
Dave in Green replied to Dr Z's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
Maybe, maybe not. Are we going to suspend every player coming out of college this season for five games who might have some relationship with a drug dealer? 80% of the rookies wouldn't be on the field for the first five games. The NFL/NCAA agreement is that the NFL will match any NCAA punishment for a player who leaves the NCAA for the NFL to escape NCAA punishment. It only affects players found guilty of violating rules, not players only suspected of violating rules. Kind of fits in with the American system of jurisprudence that one is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, don't you think? -
2012 WG commit Reggie McAdams
Dave in Green replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball Recruiting
Looks like they're finally catching up. When I searched just a few days ago, I couldn't find a rating for McAdams on any of the services. I believe an 89 would tie him with Chauncey Gilliam for second-highest-rated player on the team, as Gilliam also had an 89 in 2008 Zeke is obviously the highest-rated Zips player with a 92 in 2009. Brian Walsh was rated at 88 back when he graduated HS in 2008, Nick Harney was an 87 in 2010, Q was only a 40, and Tree wasn't even rated. This is very promising. -
Another good reason why some top HS basketball talent might consider coming to UA. How many college players get a chance to go up against LeBron for a week?

Moore seems intensely dedicated to doing whatever he needs to do to have a chance at playing in the pros. Playing a pure pro style offense in college is probably in his best interests.

Thanks for that YouTube connection. It was nice to be able to rerun the video a few times to take in all the details. Obviously I slightly misremembered the details, as I thought the free throw shot in the JAR was right at the end.

I was watching the WKYC-TV (Channel 3) news at 11 last night when a commercial came on. I started to mentally tune it out, as I do most TV commercials. Then I suddenly realized it was KD talking about his Dad's health problem, and how Summa saved his life. It was a GREAT ad! KD comes across so naturally that it almost doesn't seem like an ad, but more of a news feature. He speaks from the heart about how much each comversation with his dad means to him after he was so close to death. The ad ends with KD's dad nailing a free throw and KD snagging the ball. Summa is making excellent use of their connection with UA.

Keeping Threads On Topic
Dave in Green replied to Dave in Green's topic in Board Comments, Suggestions & Technical Support
The tOSU holy wars are only partially related to keeping threads on topic. While it's true that some of these battles begin as a result of off-topic expressions of dislike for tOSU in threads not directly related to tOSU, this happens less often than with Can't. No one complains about anti-Can't OT remarks, but a few object to anti-tOSU OT remarks. Because Zips fans are so divided in their opinions of tOSU, it can be a divisive issue on a Zips fan forum. Some of the remarks can become personal and mean-spirited. But, really, the extended tOSU holy wars are largely waged by a small number of posters. There is already a remedy available for those who wish not to have to wade through this stuff on ZN.O. It's called the Ignore feature. It can be found under My Controls, Options, Manage Ignored Users. If there are a few posters on ZN.O whose remarks on tOSU or any other subject you wish to no longer see, just add their screen names in the Manage Ignored Users field and, for you, they will magically cease to exist. -
Keeping Threads On Topic
Dave in Green replied to Dave in Green's topic in Board Comments, Suggestions & Technical Support
Thanks for the input. I'm not sure if we'll be able to get everyone onboard for this. But I'm thinking that this is what I'm going to start doing from now on if I have an off-topic comment in a thread that's drifting off topic. Maybe we'll get something good started. Still open to input from others if there's a better way to make ZN.O a better place for more people. -
That is one impressive interview. Gotta love his attitude. I'm liking Mr. Moore more and more. I'm also liking this: Dennis Thames 40: 4.4 secs

Many people visit ZN.O only to get news and factual information. They aren't interested in our opinions about how ZN.O is run, who says what about whom, etc. It's unfair to them to be forced to have to wade through off-topic discussion to get the news they came looking for. On the other hand, many people obviously have strong feelings about things that go beyond just the news. Otherwise, so many threads wouldn't go so far off topic with so many people contributing so many off-topic posts. I'd like to suggest a solution that would benefit both those only interested in news and factual information as well as those who have something to say beyond that: When you're reading through a football, basketball or other thread and see something you want to comment on that doesn't directly pertain to that post's topic, post your response in another thread -- either a new or existing one -- and post a link to your response in the original thread with a comment such as: I have a comment that's off-topic to this thread that I've posted here: (link to your other post). In other words, what I did in "The Lone Ranger rides for Akron" thread to give people the option to come read this thread. That way, the original conversation can go on uninterrupted, and anyone interested in comments beyond the immediate subject can follow the link. Maybe someone can think of a better way to do this. I'd be interested in everyone's input. I really believe that something like this would be a big plus for all ZN.O members and visitors.

Fifth Day of Preseaon Men's Basketball Practice
Dave in Green replied to GoZips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Well, skepticism is not necessarily a bad thing in a world full of illusions. But there's also the concept of critical mass. It's certainly possible that an influx of higher caliber players can lead to the continuing attraction of others. It's happened at other schools, and it could be just starting at UA. Zeke may have started the process, and it may be continuing. We'll get a better idea when we see how the season goes for the current group of players, and it will continue to play out in the following years. So, yeah, you're going to get flack on this because it's still just a theory until it plays out. But there's at least a glimmer there that the process may be underway. -
Just to be clear here, you're using the old "didn't come here to sit on the bench" line in the generic sense that Moore believed he could outperform Nicely to earn the starting job, and the coaches believed he had the tools to seriously challenge Nicely for the starting job, right? You aren't saying that Moore was promised the starting job before he got here even if Nicely clearly outperformed him in practice and scrimmages, right? If the former, then I think that's pretty much what everyone thought. If the latter, then we need to discuss this further.

Wouldn't you know it. The bookies had it right: The quarterback position is still wide open, but look for Clayton Moore to emerge as the starter by opening day. sportsbooklists.com Also, I seem to recall that one of the stories about Moore coming to Akron indicated he was heavily influenced by Ron Powlus being the QB coach. Moore was said to like the fact that Powlus coached Jimmy Clausen at Notre Dame. Ianello's decision to make Moore the starter was no doubt largely based on input from Powlus.

This is a big deal for fans who want to see something different from the Zips this season. There's nothing quite like a rookie QB beating out a veteran before the first game of the season to rekindle fan interest in a losing team. Of course it's almost impossible for the rookie to live up to expectations in his first start. Moore will be immediately thrown into the fire against a big, fast tOSU defense. Lacking Nicely's experience with the Zips' offense, it could really look ugly at times. But maybe we'll also see a few bursts of goodness that will give us hope for the rest of the season. We all saw Nicely's strengths and weaknesses under game conditions. We don't yet know what Moore's are. But we think we know he's at least more mobile than Nicely. Not that you want your QB running all the time and constantly exposed to big hits. But it really does change the nature of the offense to have someone who's better able to scramble out of danger and perhaps create something out of a busted play. Exciting times.

Potential College Football Scandal
Dave in Green replied to Dave in Green's topic in Off Topic, Smack & Jokes
I reluctantly had to give up on reading the message thread that was following developments in Alabama. A bunch of Auburn trolls moved in and started posting thousands of messages, spamming it up to the point that it took an hour or more a day to read without any salient details. I'm now just waiting along with everyone else for any developments that might be important enough to make the national sports news. In any case, there are plenty of genuine, certified football scandals to follow that have broken since I started this thread, so "potential" scandals can go on the back burner. -
Lively thread on ncaabbs.com about how Toledo fans are using the Zips game to scout tOSU: Scouting OSU vs. Akron
-
And now instead of investigating, the NCAA gets investigated by an interesting new group with powerful connections: Rand joins with organization to look into NCAA
-
So if the guy thinks the Zips are the Owls, how should we take his evaluation that "the Akron program is improving rapidly as they have a very talented quarterback in Clayton Moore and lots of other talented skill players."?

SI article on our former adversary

A marriage made in heaven: Terrelle Pryor and Al Davis. Raiders take Terrelle Pryor in third round -
You got me! You and I have so much in common. It's so masochistic for someone to spend more than 6 years on a Zips forum unsuccessfully trying to beat down tOSU haters, and it's so masochistic for someone else to think they can convince that person to change their pattern of behavior to something more effective. Which one of us will be the first to come to our senses? OK, back to football. Really.

Fifth Day of Preseaon Men's Basketball Practice
Dave in Green replied to GoZips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Thanks for the confirmation, GoZips. The only odd part is that while the football scouting services are really high on McAdams, he barely registers with the basketball scouting services. Maybe they just assumed he was going to go with football and didn't bother to scout him that closely in basketball. He looks good in the online HS basketball videos. Nosing around some of the HS basketball forums, a fair number of fans thought that even with all the football interest from big name schools that he might have a better future in basketball. Dayton was where some folks thought he would wind up. If in fact he is a Dayton-level basketball talent, he should be an asset to the Zips. -

Fifth Day of Preseaon Men's Basketball Practice
Dave in Green replied to GoZips's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
I'm also curious about this. I guess you could consider it a coup that a player whose list of college choices included Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin for football instead chose UA for basketball. Or maybe GoZips meant that McAdams has way more basketball potential than any of the scouting services have figured out. I guess we'll have to keep guessing unless GoZips decides to expand on this.
