Okay, first off all don't tell me to get with the program on something I would venture to guess 97-99 % of the country don't know or care about. Why don't you check the ratings on last year's "College Cup" or whatever the hell it's called. That should speak volumes to you. Secondly, why are you calling people asses for being exactly like just about every other American and not paying attention to soccer?? This is America, we love football, get over it. Soccer will always be a B or C level sport. I'm not saying this to bash our soccer players, because like I said before I know they've worked hard and I'm proud of them. Any success by any school team is good for the school. The only point I was making is that myself (and I'm sure the Zips athletic department) would much rather have that kind of success in a major sport (football or men's basketball, and even college baseball is more visible). If this athletic program is ever going to take off we've got to achieve national rankings in one of those sports (preferably football, though a berth in March Madness would be awesome).

Exactly.

Congrats to the team, I know they work hard. This doesn't mean that much to me personally as a fan, considering it is SOCCER (do they even show the NCAA's on tv??), but I'm happy for any UA team that does well. If we could only have that kind of success in football, basketball, or baseball!!!

The carnage unfold?? The game was tied when the mass exodus began and took place at the end of the 3rd quarter/beginning of the fourth So basically.... As evidenced by the Marshall game, Zips fans will leave when the team is down big. As evidenced by the NIU game, Zips fans will leave when the Zips are blowing their opponent out. And as evidenced by the CMU game, Zips fans will leave when the game is DEAD even. So I don't think you can say Zips fans are like all other fans in sports. It's not even close. The Zips have some of the WORST fans in sports.

Excellent post ITZ, again. If you ever find out who I am, I'd be glad to buy you a beer at the end zone beer garden (is it really a garden if there are no plants growing in the area?). I thought I was the only one to have Getsy's back. Let's hope those injuries aren't too bad. I definately might take you up on that!!

Let's please not start calling this a rebuilding year again based off one game. I guarantee you they aren't calling it that down in Oxford based off one game. We are still very much in the hunt for the MAC East. BG is NOT THAT GOOD.

From those of us who have attended games at the RB with only a couple thousand fans on hand, Zone, I think I can represent...........and tell you that..............no, the players would not like to look up and see a virtually empty stadium. You made good points until the last statement Z-P. Trust me on this: The players would rather play in front of an empty stadium for an entire game than to have 10K fans show up only to watch them all file out before the 4th quarter. Nothing is more disheartening to a player than to see 75% of the stadium get up and leave in the middle of a game. The members of the team aren't the only Zips that have been packing it in during the 4th quarter this year. I don't care what you say, it's got to have an effect on the psyche of a bunch of teenagers and twenty somethings to see all their "fans" quit on them.

Getsy severely sprained his thumb in the 2nd quarter. Biggs had a minor concussion in the 4th.

Here's what I posted in the other thread: Some of you talk about the Zips making you sick, well let me be honest, most of you make me sick. Last week you're asking how we can keep the next Urban Meyer, JD Brookhart in town, and this week you're talking about what a douche bag he is. Last week, you're saying Luke Getsy is the second coming of Joe Namath, and now he sucks. Folks, in real life, sometimes things don't go as planned. These things happen in college football. It was ONE game. ONE. This is still the same team that played with Purdue, same team that dominated MTSU (who beat Vandy Saturday) and the same team that beat NIU. College kids are moody, they aren't professionals, and inevitably some weeks they are going to show up with the wrong attitude. This is in no way an indictment of the coach unless it happens on a consistent basis, which it certainly has not. And let me tell you guys something about Luke Getsy Saturday night. From the 2nd quarter on he was playing with a severely sprained thumb on his throwing hand. Now if I were the coach in that situation, I would go to our capable backup John Ferguson, but I respect the decision that was made to leave Getsy in. Just thought some of you that are gutting Getsy on here should know that. How after three straight games of +300 yards some of you could say the things you have about him is beyond me. Honestly, I believe the Zips would rather play in empty stadiums than for 10K fairweather fans and students that leave a close game at the end of the third quarter because the social event is pretty much over and it's time to party. THAT's what made me sick, not the play of the Zips.

I disagree. I've been to a lot of college football games where they shoot fireworks. And see its for minor league baseball, the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have all done fireworks recently at games I've been at. It just adds to the excitement and is something good for the kids who might otherwise be bored with a game they don't really understand.
-
The cannon's one of my favorite things at the game. Most major schools have something like that, it adds to the atmosphere. I'd be very disappointed if they did away with this. They should also consider firing fireworks everytime the Zips score a touchdown.

Predict Akron vs. Central Michigan score!!
InTheZone replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in Akron Zips Football
Maybe I'm just an optimist, but I see a 20K crowd for Saturday. There's been a lot written about this team lately and a couple of nice opinion columns on campus in the Buchtelite. The students are really starting to love this team, and for the first time I can remember Zips players are lovable household names around campus. Student interest is peaked, and the community likes a winner. Hopefully that translates into a big crowd. -

Guys to be totally honest we should've blown out NIU who is supposed to be one of the best teams in the MAC. I don't think some of you realize how good our Zips really are. You will after this week. Akron 49 CMU 10 -
None other than David Lee Morgan taking in the afternoon workout. Now I've been out to a lot of Zips practices in the past, but this may be the first time I've ever seen our beat writer actually watching a midweek practice. The emails must be doing some good, I think we deserve to give ourselves a pat on the back!!
-
We still won't get any respect from the media. We are playing THAT Central Michigan right??
-
The Zips were never in a prevent defense. They were in their base defense the entire fourth quarter, but when a team goes hurry up it is next to impossible for Jim Flemming to call in blitzes and coverages. Our 3-3-5 depends on blitz packages and coverage variations to work, and when you can't get those in, it makes it very hard to stop anything.
-
And the sweaters at #89....
-
If JD leaves, I think d-coordinator Jim Flemming would be a fine replacement. In his only head coaching stint he took a 1-AA team to an undefeated season, and he seems very apt at motivating his players.
-
Thanks for the comments boro. I have a feeling you guys are much better than your record shows and are about to rip off a nice little winning streak. Also, one of you guys should email CBS and let them know you guys aren't 1-AA. Sportsline article ips report: Inside slant Sep. 21, 2005 The Sports Xchange Inside slant · Notes, quotes · Strategy and personnel Even though it was against Division I-AA Middle Tennessee State, the Zips' defensive effort in their first win of the season, a 17-7 win over the Blue Raiders, has coach J.D. Brookhart feeling good about his team on that side of the ball. After yielding 49 points to Purdue in the season opener, the Zips came back with the single-touchdown effort against MTSU. "I sensed it last year," said Brookhart. "I think toward the end of last year we started to develop a certain attitude and this year, we're expanding on it." With seven starters back from last year, there was continuity in place for the Zips. Senior linebacker Jay Rohr leads the team with 23 tackles through two games, while senior nose tackle Kiki Gonzalez has been an attention-grabber for the opposition, opening up opportunities for his teammates. With the offense still trying to get itself together behind a new starter under center, getting a defensive effort like the one against Middle Tennessee State has Brookhart feeling good about the rest of the year. "The defense simply shut down the run and put a lot of pressure on the pass game," said Brookhart. "They forced a lot of three and outs and were not on the field much. To give up only seven points to a team that played Alabama tough and that has much talent on offense as they do, it shows how great our defense performed."

What I was impressed with was the number of students at the game Saturday. It looks like it's finally "in" at the U to go to football games before getting tanked on the weekends (or maybe before, from what I saw ). What I didn't like was that about half of them left early (granted we were up by 21 points going into the 4th). Now we just need more support from the community at large.
-
Alright, the coverage of one of the biggest wins in Akron's MAC history was absolutely pathetic. Guys, we really have to do something.
-
BRP, thanks for the comments, and I'll definately be following your team for the rest of the season wishing them the best. Like I told you guys after the game, MTSU is a good squad who's had some bad luck and started 0-3, much like we did last year. Especially as you guys get into your conference schedule, I can see you shooting off a streak of 4 or 5 wins and be right back in the thick of things. Arkansas St doesn't look bad this year and you never know about Troy, so North Texas could still drop two and make you guys conference champs if you win out. Good luck the rest of the season!
-
Man, am I jacked up for the game today!!! This is the most excited I can remember being before a home opener. I'm headin out, and hopefully next time I'm on here we'll be celebrating our statement victory in the MAC. GO ZIPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay guys, I haven't recieved a response to any of my emails, so here's what I suggest. Sunday morning, if the Zips game doesn't recieve front-page Sports coverage, we flood the mail box of Pantages. We do this by all of us simply writing a brief email message around seven on sunday night, blasting him for his utter stupidity and crap coverage of the biggest sports team in our city, and then after sending it to him, repeatedly forward it to him again.....over....and over...and over and over and over again. If we all do this, and resend it to him about 30-40 times, maybe he'll get the picture. Just my suggestion .
