  1. They should all drink the kool aid and die
  2. I do not remember seeing anywhere that JD signed an extension, only that they were working on an extension. Hard to believe that a deal has been struck and nothing has been released by Akron's sports news office. Must be some kink in the deal.
  3. Hiring Joyce gives Akron nothing in terms of nation recruiting ties. Dambrot's staff needs someone who has basketball roots outside of Ohio. Every assistant on the staff is from Ohio, which is a pretty narrow focus n recruiting. It would also be nice to see someone with significant D-1 experience since the staff is also made up of guys with Division II and Division III backgrounds.
  4. Huggins = Scumbag. Can't State on probation within 5 years guaranteed. The new academic rules will crush him if his own antics do not first.
  5. The NIT Field is announced at 9 pm tonight on ESPN News.
  6. Winning at the Gund this week would help build that base. With all of the football success I expect at least 10,000 season tickets next year and 3,000 basketball season tickets.
  7. The biggest problem that Akron has is getting past Dambrot's inability to manage his lineups. He loves Dru Joyce so much that he will not sit him down, even when the team is up. This team is a wreck strength wise and cannot keep up with bigger faster teams. I think today is going to be a telling sign for Akron and will end with a double-digit loss. From what I hear there are some major chemistry issues with this team off the court and that more than anything else will choke out the season prematurely.
  8. Two tough losses have this team in a spiral. Hard to figure out the rotation these days as deeper in the season the players who used to be offensive thrreats are getting fewer minutes. Dambrodt's doghouse must be getting crowded because all he seems to be doing is gearing all of the minutes around his old high school kids.Drew Joyce is not an offensive threat and is taking a whole lot of pops from way downtown. According to the radio last night one of those shots came from almost 30 feet out. Bad PG night last night and played a ton of minutes. Assists are also down from earlier in the season. Joyce is not big enough to take that kind of physical abuse and could get used bad on Saturday. Ohio has some big, physical guards who took him to task during the last game. Where is Darrel Petersen these days. I remember when he was leading the team in scoring and now he barely gets off the bench.I have a bad feeling this team is going to go in the shitter and lose out. Akron may well be headed for a first round game again after what could be the worst collapse in Akron basketball history.I hope I am wrong but this team is looking bad and sounding bad. If they fall to Ohio I think this team will not win another game all season.
  9. There was a plan to renovate the JAR a few years back but it lost steam due to the football stadium project. There is no way that the classrooms will move out of the JAR because the building is designated as a classroom building since the day it was built with state funds for that purpose.
  10. The Bubba Walther Curse claims it's first victim.
  11. Sharps was not committed to the team from what I understand - too much like Josh cribbs if you get my whiff.
  12. $5 tickets and the old Acme Zip thought process is what caused this mess with apathy about Akron U sports. No one puts any value into a ticket they get for $1 or $5 and eventually you have got to charge a real price for MAC-level college sports event. You can get into a high school or Wooster game for $5. Going down to that level makes no sense at all for the long term growth of the department. This aint Walsh or St. V, its college basketball. Akron already has some of the lowest prices around for college games. If you cut prices for tickets then the money has to be made up somewhere else or you cannot afford to pay coaches, staff, etc...Akron got more than 33K in the Bowl for the Marshall game in 2004 by giving away more than half the house. Then this past season the crowds never came back and Akron drew no more than 14K for any home game this past season when they were winning a MAC title.I know UAM and others in the department and they have tried just about everything to get out students, or anyone else with a pulse. The problem is that many of the students and fans have not experienced winning before and now they are going to have to take a leap of faith and get back in the flow with the Zips. I used to work at Akron and know that they are dealing with a slighted deck.
  13. That is like coming in third with a race against a pregnant woman.
  14. How about a thread about the lack of an inside game, the fact that Akron is about to win 20 games for the first time in more than two decades or the chance of becoming the first ever Akron team to win the MAC regular season title outright?
  15. On a positive note give Can't State credit for drawing more fans to the Sunday baskteball game than they had in Dicks Stadium all last season. Can't State - home of the nation's longest division one football losing streak - now at 10 games.
  16. So sorry but this does not really get me excited. Making the top 20 in a spot with less than 60 teams is no real accomplishment.
  17. People will come when it is convenient. The students need to show up for games, especially the midweek games.
  18. Zippy the mascot should never change. Ever.
  19. I agree with Willy - the pep band sucks to high heaven now and has for the last few years. Most of the kids look like they are on prozac. If they are getting paid they need to get fired becuase they are terrible. They should not have been moved upstairs, they should have been booted out of the arena altogether. If you cannot play some tunes that have been written in the last 20 years it may be time to go all taped music.
  20. Akron is not going to get on a FM station anytime soon. Other than WNIR there are no FM stations that carry sports in Northeast Ohio. WNIR only does Can't State basketball and has a long term contract. Akron has a long term contract with 1350 AM.
  21. Any player that tells a coach NO should get his sorry ass kicked off the team. Period, end of discussion. If the guy does not like his role as a human victory cigar maybe he should not have transferred from Geneva.I find it odd that Zip basketball fans are bitching when the team when by more than 20 points over another MAC team. If the team were as "unified" as the fan base it would be like a Hipsher coached team - a loser.Great job coaches and players, way not to have a let down as the POS bunch from Can't State and keep going strong into EMU on Saturday.
  22. Until Akron Basketball beats Can't State in the first battle of the year between the two teams the population not going to buy in and come to the games in masses. My parents live in Akron and my Dad tells me he hears about the Zip games all of the time on radio, in the paper, and on cable tv. He has had season tickets for more than 20 years but cannot get other people in the community to come to the games with him because of this that or the other excuse. I think the Akron community does not know anything about the MAC and therefore does not understand that Buffalo is a good team or that WMU has been an NCAA team in the last 3-4 years.Akron had a great bowl game turnout but could not draw more than 15,000 fans to a single football game in 2005. Will that be different next year?Winning draws fans, not a bobblehead giveaway or free hot dogs. If the Zip hoopers had done their job the other day at Can't State the house would have been about 3,000 tonight. I look for big crowds for Ohio and Can't State and really bad crowds for WMU and Bowling Green. Who the heck would schedule a game on valentine's day? Not too many wives or husbands will be at that one.
  23. It was in the game notes section of the Sunday Beacon Journal!
