  1. I have a good friend in the MAC Office and the following are solid scenarios. Miami cannot win the MAC East with any combination of wins losses of remaining MAC games. BGSU is the MAC East Champ if... If BGSU beats Toledo, BGSU is the MAC East Champ - regardless of any other game. If Akron loses to Can't State and Ohio beats Miami, BGSU is the MAC East Champ. If BGSU loses to Toledo, Akron loses to Can't State and Miami Beats Ohio, BGSU is the MAC East Champ as BGSU beat Miami. The only ways that Akron can win the MAC East title are - if Ohio beats Miami, Akron beats Can't, and Toledo defeats BGSU, Akron is the MAC East Champ. If Toledo beats BGSU, Miami beats Ohio, and Akron beats Can't State there is a three-way tie for the MAC East Crown. The first tiebreaker is head to head matchups, which is all even. The second tiebreaker is record against the other MAC East schools, which is also all even. The third tiebreaker is a comparison of conference winning percentage of cross-over opponents. If NIU beats WMU, both Akron and BGSU will be tied at a cross over record of 15-9. The best crossover win total for Miami would be 14, so the RedHawks would be eliminated. Once Miami is out of the comparison, the tiebreakers revert back to the first of the list which is head to head matchups. Akron beat BGSU, so Akron is the MAC East Champ.
  2. The game is not really "on" TV, it is on ESPNu which no one except for dish folks get. Can't imagine most will opt to not come for the boob tube reason. Lots of us old time Akron folks remember the Turkey Day game. I expect about 10K for the game.
  3. What is sad is that Can't State will probably not bring a single fan to the game. They are drawing the worst crowds in the nation right now. This game should be at the start of the season. Playing at the end is a curse.
  4. I doubt they would give an interim postion to someone who is not qualified for the full time job. If the AD is not teaching classes why would he need a master's degree. I would think you would really limit your prospective applicants with that type of criteria. I would look for the person who could best do the job.
  5. I think the team is right about where I thought they would be. You can be the coulda woulda shoulda game all day and night but this is just not that good a team and has no leadership from t he player side, which is where it counts. The team should have beaten Army, Ball State and CMU but should have lost to NIU, Bowling Green and MTSU. 6-5 would be a great accomplishment.
  6. The lack of an offensive line is the reason why this offense sputters and fails to produce, especially early in games. It is amazing how many of you still thing that changing the quarterback is going to lift the offense from this obvious facts. Is Getsy Charlie Frye, Butchie Washington or Marty B for t hat matter - NO. He is actually more like one of the Zips track stars the way he has to run for his life on almost every play. Why no QB sneak? Well, when the other team has 9 men in the box and your OL has had their ass handed to them on almost every play from scrimmage during the afternoon you try to create some space and extend the play. NIU beat Akron badly up front on first down which forced passes from a short field on the next three downs. Passing from the 5 yard line is touch because the cboundary becomes like another 4 defenders for the offense. Penalites come from youth and lack of discipline up front. See all of the above per the offensive and defensive lines. The defense could not stop BSU during some crucial points in the game. Overall they did hold the BSU offense to FG and not TDs. On two of those occasions BSU should not have even gotten FG. This unit is bad up front and is beat up in the back. Add in undersized and young LB and you get the C- performance on Saturday. Akron special teams are the worst part of this team. Sullivan is in the tank and the coverage teams are the worst in the league. No speed and no aggressiveness. The person in charge of these units should not be kept on staff. After no open date the first 9 weeks of the season Akron finally gets some time off. Lets hope that some of the flatness came from just being pooped. If Akron loses either of the final two games of the season at home the 2005 slate will be considered a massive failure.
  7. jim pry is the oc not jd the ol is shitty beyond belief and any rushing yards are a result od biggs alone the defwnsw gave up four third downs of more than eight yards against a bad bsu team our kixking game is awful
  8. Public posturing. The U is still trying to buy land so they are keeping things on the down low. No reason to pop up land prices with talk until all funding is secured. From what I hear they are very close.
  9. ITZ - I don't know what "story" to which you are referring but if you are still peddling that "Lee got let got by a note" crap it has long ago been proven untrue. I have some friends very close to that situation, one who is a HS coach now in Stark County, and he told me something very different. I think you are calling the wrong guy the snake here andthe source that gave you the story had an agenda. As for someone leaving, wish them well and move along. The next person in the chair should be able to keep the program moving in the right direction.
  10. I was on the Purdue trip and I was given a hat, juice, and muffins. I also went on the trip to Buffalo and it was a blast too.
  11. I said before the season that this team would win 4 to 5 games due to lack of on field leadership, experience, andmost of all a lack of talent. This is playing out as such. I thought Akron would be 2-4 at this point and they are ahead of my pace - could be better but also could be worse. I laugh at these posts that say Akron should be a MAC contender this season. No friggin way. Akron has no depth and no OL talent at all. This team is at least two years away from the Miami/BG level.
  12. I got one at work last week and one at home earlier this week. Sounds like you just got a bad batch of mail.
  13. Both Dials and Wood played tonight at the tipoff event. Pretty easy going scrimmage but both seemed to move well. Doubt it will be much longer for the clearnace if it has not already been given.
  14. If Akron gives up more points to Buffalo than it did to MTSU (7) I will be shocked. At least M Tn St had athletes and has beaten an SEC team, Buffalo cannot even beat OFF. Zips 42 or more Bulls 3 or less
  15. This board is a rat ship baby. Last week everyone was thinking BCS for the 2005 team and saying the QB was the second coming of Unitas. This week everyone is saying the QB sucks nad the head coach is a loser. The one thing that is certain is that no one really cares about Akron football and that was before lsat night's game as Z-P said, only 10K showed up for the contest. That's 5K less than week one. Now with a 2-2 start the majority of this board is packing it in and looking ahead to basketball season? No one fills up the hoops arena either so who really cares aboutZip athletics. Wonder what the CMU fans were saying last week after they lost to Eastern Michigan? Perhaps the Patriots fans are syaing the Billichek and Brady should be gone after falling to 2-2 today? Akron will be favored to beat Buffalo, Army, Ball State, Ohio and Can't State. BG and Miami are toss-ups. If the team comes to play for 60 minutes they should finish no worse than 7-4. In a rebuilding year that the coaches have stated was this season from the get-go you'd think that a potential 7-win season would be a good one in the eyes of a program that has only had 5 winning seasons out of the last 20. Since this program has never been to a D-1 bowl game and had no football postseason since Gerald Ford was President it is absurd to think that a team this inexperienced would be headed to a bowl game in 2005. Guess in the world of the Akron football "fan" 7-4 is not good enough.
  16. With the crowds the football team is drawing maybe the school should build a soccer stadium that the football team can play in. When soccer is drawing 25% of your football total crowd you should be very worried. Does not sound like there is much interest in Akron football from the public.
  17. One bad game and Quick Zips wants to kill the QB? That's pretty shaky. Sounds like the Zips go a case of the big head and did not come out with fire in the second half. CMU had the passion and won the game. Statistics wde this one looks like it was in the bag at halftime and this inexperienced Zips got caught thinking about the future instead of lowering the boom. Let's hope they learn from the lesson and do not repeat the mistake. Heading onto this season Brookhart warned of the lack of experience and depth on the fronts and tonight that showed through. Add in the overconfidence factor and that is a recipe for disaster. On paper this game looks like a reversal of the NIU game. Akron scored easily on it's first two drives, went up 10-0, rolled up big numbers in terms of yardage and went into the half fat and happy. When teams are not mature in how to win and how to finish this stuff happens. You can bet that they were told to lay down the hammer and that the kids just tuned it out. Doubt the coaches slept much last night as those guys take things pretty hard, as they should. This is the kind of loss that lingers so no better time on the schedule than to play Buffalo next week. Running the football successfully comes down to line play, talent in the backfield and want to. My friends at the game said the backs were getting hit by multiple CMU defenders in the backfield and at the line. When you set a school record for passing attempts due to a lack of running game that is a bad omen my friends. Hard to believe the crowd was only 10K after 15K last week. A 33% drop after a big win is odd. At this rate there will be only 1K for the Thanksgiving game. I would not give up on the team after a 2-2 start. I think it's odd how many people want to discard Getsy this week after a bad game when following last week's game you loved him. Your memories should be able to last longer than a computer re-boot. I doubt many wanted to see Charlie Frye replaced after the CMU game in 2002 or the Can't State game in 2003. It's not one player who lost, or one side of the ball, this looks like a team loss, as most of them are. Next week will be a telling sign as to where this team is.
  18. For the second consecutive Saturday, Ashland's football team (3-2, 2-2 GLIAC) was leading a nationally-ranked and undefeated team in the fourth quarter. This week, on the road in Houghton, MI, AU saw a 14-10 advantage evaporate in the game’s final minutes and turn into a 17-14 victory for 15th-ranked Michigan Tech.
  19. I have been following Akron football for 9 years, and the MTSU game MAY be the first time I can remember the Zips defense leading the charge to a win. At hte point in the season the defensive unit should be ahead of the offense, but the multiple three and outs yesterday have me very excited about the future of this team, now and for the next few years. The offense is getting yards, it just needs to tighten up on the line. The big'uns can pass protect but Biggs is not seeing much daylight. I think when people champion how well the line is playing they must be comparing them to the former Zips OL and not a truly effective offensive front, such as what Toledo or Bowling Green have displayed this year. For Akron to be a dangerous offense it needs to be able to put Biggs over 100 yards in every game. That case in made by the passing game popping for 300+ only to have the lack of a ground attack yielded just 17 points. It is harded to push around a DL than it is to delay them from advancing. When thi OL matures the team will have something pretty good going.
  20. Back in Akron this weekend and picked up this morning's paper. I know that Zips fans feel bad about being on page 11, but how do you think the Akron Aeros feel after winning their league championship on Saturday, in Akron, and getting bumped to the back while the Indians, Browns and Buckeyes all get coverage on the front page. The Areos win a title and get a 1x1 inch text nugget at the top of the page, nary even a logo. The Cleveland/Columbus Beacon Journal?
  21. Was in Columbus for the Texas game last night but caught the Akron game on the ESPN 360 computer video. Have to say I was much impressed by the performance. Save a few personnel letdowns with penalities (at least 14 points given to Purdue) and one substitution miscue early in the game and this was a gutty performance. Getsy ain't Charlie but he gets the job done. Hixon is an animal and Gonzalez and Tate both played well defensively. Team speed is way, way up and the Zippers have a nice problem with two great runningbacks. Hard to remember a more well-rounded Akron performance, meaning defense and offense both coming to play consistently. Big 10 stripes did not help Akron much either, but what do you expect, the Big 12 refs in the Shoe did not help us either. Akron should fare well against MTSU and should have a shot in the MAC. Neither BG or Miami seem like worldbeaters based on their MAC openers and the MU's are already one down in the loss column to CMU. Akron is on the way up and MU is on the way down. Ohio had their fun on Friday night but Pittsburgh is just plain awful. BG is the class of the east but they got pushed at Ball State. Buffalo is bad and so is Can't State, struggling against a BAD 1-AA team is not the performance I expected from the flushes but think that they could beat Miami this week at home. 5-7 wins is in reach if the penalties and now and then letdowns get corrected.
  22. Akron has no chance at all to win at Purdue. Purdue 65 Akron 7
  23. Wide Open Offenses that could score with anyone in the country netted NO WINS against any of the big teams and NO MAC TITLES = See ya Coach Owens. Hey Zone, what was your point?
  24. Marshall wil play this fall, no prop 48.
  25. Marshall could be the star of the Zips class. Put him with Nate Robinson & Marlon Terry on the 3 of the 3-4 of the Zips defense in 2006 and you will have the finest defensive line in the MAC. Add Antwon Hight to the mix and it may be the best DL in Ohio.
