  1. Actually there are (3) MAC Championship banners flying at Akron which have been won over the LAST THREE MONTHS. Unlike Can't State the Akron people do not have to pile all of their banners in one location to get noticed.
  2. I like baseball - another sports we took 2 of three from Can't State last year
  3. Open air 35K plush with room to expand, 60 million, 2010, Wallaroo/Joey & Brown Street all gone with new dorms built as part of project - done
  4. Antonio Gates - clever. Were you the slapdick that came up with SCREW THE ROO or FEAR THIS?67-52 ZIPS
  5. How about Rolling Acres....? They have lots of space for cheap.
  6. I tried to call at 9:15 am this morning to buy tickets and they told me they were sold out. I called my brother who lives in Can't and asked him to drop by there this morning and he was able to buy tickets. If you want tickets they still have them for sale as of 9:45 am but are only selling them to folks who actually go to the ticket office. I guess a lot of Akron fans are buying up their tickets and they are worried that phone sales are more Akron fans than Can't fans.
  7. Again, it does not seem to hurt Notre Dame, Southern Cal or Penn State fans. And again, your coach has already said it is not coming back.
  8. The AK-ROWDIES last night were pathetic, but only in their lack of enthusiasm for their team. No lasting cheers, dead quiet most of the second half. It was like pulling teeth to get everyone to cheer or spark the team into a run and kill the Bulls off by 20+. This is what you are there for not to stand there and watch and not do anything. THE STUDENT SECTION SHOULD BE LOUD ALL THE TIME! I know it's hard but a least don't look at ME strangely when I am screaming my vocal cords out try to get 200 fair-weather students to spark our offense when we ABOUT TO BLOW A TOP 100 TEAM OUT OF THE JAR. Be consistent or give up the prime seats to fans who will cheer. I actually heard a student walking out of the JAR complaining that the team only won by 14 and that is was not exciting to watch us play teams like Buffalo? How bad is that.GET IN THE GAME KIDS - YOU ARE IN COLLEGE - CUT LOOSE - HAVE SOME FUN
  9. Penn State, Southern Cal, Notre Dame do not have player names on the jerseys. I remember JD stating why he took them off and that they would not return as long as he was the coach at Akron. I like that thought.
  10. Sorry to bust your bubble but the lower tier bowls give no cash - those figures are based on value of tickets. Akron got no cash at all for playing in the bowl game this year save the funds they made from the sale of tickets.
  11. August 31 is the first playing date... with the PSU game on Saturday that would not work well. From what I here the first home game will be on September 16.
  12. Focused activity yes, sport no. This is like driving a car or sweeping (curling). But if Ballroom dancing is an olympic sport, why not shootin a gun.
  13. Who cares about this sport?Answer: No one
  14. Classic college teams do not do all one color. And, Akron has never won a game in blue pants.Any uniform combo that was used in the 20-0 loss to Army should be burned and banned for all eternity.
  15. Another great idea by our bud UAM. Cricket is long overdue.Zips To Honor Former Coaches Huggins, Webb On Jan. 26Pair to be inaugural inductees into Rhodes Arena Coaches Corner. Jan. 20, 2006AKRON, Ohio - Former University of Akron head men's basketball coaches Bob Huggins and Wyatt Webb will serve as the inaugural inductees into the Coaches Corner of Rhodes Arena in a ceremony on Thursday, January 26 as part of the Zips' game with Miami (Ohio). Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. EST and the game will be broadcast live on Ohio News Network (ONN), with the induction taking place at halftime."These are two of the most successful coaches in the history of our program," current Akron head coach Keith Dambrot said. "I'm excited that they are being honored for their accomplishments."Huggins spent five seasons on the Akron bench, posting a 97-46 record during his tenure. In 1986 the Zips made their first-ever appearance at the NCAA Tournament as a Division I program, falling 70-64 to No. 2 seed Michigan to finish the year with a 22-8 record. Huggins also directed the Zips to NIT apperances in 1987 (21-9) and 1989 (21-8). The 1988-89 season marked the last 20-win campaign for Akron. Following his time at UA Huggins was head coach at Cincinnati for 15 seasons (1989-90 to 2004-05). In that time he posted a 399-127 record, leading the Bearcats to 14-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.Webb, who passed away in October of 2003, coached the Zips from 1969-75 with a record of 126-60, making him one of just four coaches in the program's 104-year history to post 100 or more career victories. In 1972, Webb's team advanced to the NCAA College Division championship game, falling to Roanoke by an 84-72 score. His 1972 squad included All-Americans Len Paul and Wil Schwarzinger. Under Webb, the Zips were four-time participants in the NCAA College Division tournament.A pregame social will take place for the inductees in the Tommy Evans Lounge. The halftime ceremony will feature a video presentation and speeches by Huggins and a member of the Webb family. Â This is the first of two events this season to honor men's basketball greats. On Feb. 26, former players Eric McLaughlin (1986-89) and Larry Jenkins (1971-74) will have their jerseys raised into the rafters of Rhodes Arena.Â
  16. I think it would be foolish to change the uniform in which we have won the MAC Title, last year's Marshall game, and the MCB as all were the most watched events in Akron football history. Changing now would kill any momentumn that may have been built up in the look.Nothing needs to change - get some OL and DB's.BTW - that oval A logo looked like some high schools here in the state. There is a reason it was retro.
  17. You are obviously not a strong soccer fan if you do not see the advantages of Avery and Porter. Both are the chief recruiters for two of the finest soccer programs in the nation and will bring great talent to UA. Agoos was part of three NCAA titles as a player. Don't know much about the guy from Penn.Docking has not moved outside of the State of SC in his coaching career. Winning smaller D-1 leagues and getting bounced in the first round of the NCAA's is not very impressive to me. Hiring him because he is an alum is also not a priority for keeping the program strong. Recruiting is the name of the game and Docking has not recruited the midwest or players at a top 10 school level of play. Indiana, Notre Dame and Cal have all been top 10 programs either this year or in the immediate past few years. If Docking is so great, why is he still coaching in Conway, SC - not exactly the hotbed of the soccer universe?
  18. Akron's major weakness for 2006 is the kicking game in all areas. This year Sullivan was inconsistent to bad most of the year. He is gone and must be replaced as no one else save Frye and Getsy have punted or pooched for the last 4 years.Swiger is also gone and was pretty good. You could not have had a better guy take over for Zac Derr after the bad Sullivan-PK year in 2002.The kick/punt return and kick/punt coverage units were bad. Wallerstedt was the Special Teams coach and he is gone, which may be a good thing. This unit cost Akron dearly in many games this season.I think Montgomery and Hixon will be losses but since Brookhart is a guru at coaching receivers this should be a reloading situation.I think Alex Allen and Dennis Kennedy will do fine in replacing Biggs. It will not matter who is in the backfield if the offensive line cannot block any better for the backs. The OL is the biggest question mark on either the offensive or defensive side of the ball. Too many penalties and not enough power. Biggs had to lead the nation in yards after contact beacuse his heart got him over 1,000 yards, not the sloppy OL play. The o-line has been my biggest disappointment since Brookhart took over.Quarterback could be Akron U's deepest position with Getsy, Jackson, Ferguson and Jacquemain all returning. Add in some good recruits in the pocket and the Zip signal callers should be set for years to come.On defense Akron needs to find some bigger DB's who can stay with the jump-ball receivers like Memphis had. That unit is much better than they were three years ago but still needs major work. Our LBs were undersized this year but with the kids coming off redshirts and in from the academic sidelines we should be fine. The DL is the strength of this team and it is the best in the MAC.I see 7-8 wins minimum next year and another MAC East title.
  19. I must be the only who disagrees with this. To me this can be spun in a variety of different ways against BG.1. So the big schools will not come to your stadium and play... why not?2. Can't you draw a crowd at home?3. Why did you move a home game and get outdrawn by an out of state team?I could go on and on, but why would anyone in Cleveland really care that much about a BG/Wisconsin game that would have not gone to BG any way for the game? BG will miss a chance to showcase their campus to a potentially huge crowd. Perhaps they are wanting to play in an NFL stadium because they did not make it to the postseason this year.As for Akron buying a game with Ohio State, that would seem to be a good idea. I know that Akron is due to play the Bucks twice here in Columbus over the next 6 years for some pretty good payoffs. Doubt that OSU would move either of those games to Cleveland without taking the financial piece out of Akron's hands. Since that is OSU's home game Akron would then get little if anything from the move of site.Akron has some bigger schools coming to the Rubber Bowl in the upcoming years and playing in that stadium has got to be worth 7-10 points for Akron every time out.
  20. I talked to Mike on Tuesday and he seemed to be fine with the decision that was made to hire the new AD from outside. Mike said he looked forward to working with a guy who had just come from the same area that he worked in and that he could always learn new things and differnet ways of operating. Seems to have a great attitude for a guy who im my way of looking at it got the major shaft. I do not think I would be as congenial. Mike is a team player and I hope he stays and helps keep Akron Athletics going strong.
  21. Sounds like this guy is a money guy, which is more than our last AD. Thomas was a facilitiers guy and what we need is someone who can raise money. Rhodes sounds like he also has a personality which is more than I can say for Mike Thomas. That guy was a real stiff.
  22. Can't fans should cheer for Zips football since they do not have a team of their own to pull for. Division I tackle football adds a lot to a campus dynamic and it gives something for college sports fans to cheer for during the fall. Maybe the new President at Can't State will add the sport. It's a novel concept and many Ohio colleges have had success in recent years with the sport. Maybe we can help them out and donate some of the Motor City Bowl check to the cause. We could also start a web site, ADDFOOTBALLATKENTSTATE.COM If Can't State added football Akron could have a Division I rival just 15 miles away and that would be a great thing for the area. Akron fans would not have far to travel to see the team play a road game every other year and Can't State fans could follow their team to the Rubber Bowl or the new stadium on campus and see the flushes play !@#$%^& SMACK Whoops, fell into a dream and forgot that Can't State has a football team and that they are the worst team in Division I football AND that Akron is the MAC Champ. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Friday was the best day at work I have had in the last five years as my flush-loving boss had to walk past my office door and see that headline from the Akron Beacon Journal taped up for all to see. He tossed their basketball success around like you would not believe and always talks down the Zips and relives the days of Jack Lambert like it was only yesterday. 35-3 was great on Thanksgiving but a CHAMPIONSHIP puts a King Kong sized stone right up the boss man's rump. Suck on that title Flushfans - Zips rock the MAC
  23. WPIAL is a disgruntled former Akron employee who is obsessed with jealousy. Sad.
