  1. Godwin's Law rendered obsolete by the NEOCONS.Now, what the heck is a neocon? A buzz word that attempts to render anothereffete so as to fortify one's one point of view. Not being a neocon I cannot relate. While I confess that I am a Conservative, that is many miles from a neocon. My point of view is that universities should compete with each other to offerthe broadest range of thought. Lest we are sucked into a vacuum created byKeynesian economics. The converse point of view has the credentials that it,not Keynes, works.
  2. Thanks for the heads up, ZW.
  3. Excellent observations. MSU will be the Zips toughest front court foe all season.
  4. Some good points here. In a thread some time ago I proposed and idea that would take some of these concepts even further, though it would likely damage or even destroy the "College Experience" as we know it today. Why stop with 2 schools close together? From the standpoint of saving money, I like the idea of linking all the schools and allowing the students to get their degree for any Ohio College. I took quite a few classes on-line and I think it is the way of the future. Common classes and degrees would be available at the schools as they are today and over the internet. Schools with weak/low demand programs would have those programs cancelled. Schools with strong programs would keep those programs. Undergraduate students could take any class from any school online with the exception of hands-on classes/labs. These would need to be available for those students within a reasonable driving distance. It is likely that a school with a strength in that discipline would be nearby. Rare or exceptional programs may exist at only one school. My thought process is that we drive out the inefficiencies due to redundant/low demand programs and leverage technology (the Internet) to expose more people to what the schools throughout Ohio have to offer. It is conceivable that students may not even need step foot on campus.Yada, yada, yada.Read what you two are writing. Neither of you are looking at the big picture. First off, sports has absolutely nothing to do with building a "mega" university. In truth, sportswould likely be the first casualty. You do not need sports as part of a "mega" university'sidentity. Its sheer size takes care of that.Socialists eschew sports. The only sports they are interested in are those that promotetheir agenda. For reference see the 1936 Olympics.Speaking of sheer size; the student identity can be discarded. You become a number. No need for inter-action with faculty. And, by all means take as many courses as possiblefrom your home computer in your underwear. The school needs the parking spaces. Did any one mention that we already have a "mega" online university? Its name is the University of Phoenix. Once you establish that its an all encompassing one the next step is to determine whereto locate this "mega" university. Why in Akron? Why not in scenic Can't? Any attemptto have satellite campuses would soon evolve into a central campus. You lose controlif you have satellite campuses. Bigger is better? Where is that written in stone? Why is sacrificing your personal identity so important to you? When has government ever run anything efficiently? Four hundreddollar toilet seats? And, you want a governing body to create a mega school that isperfect in every conceivable way. You are far more naive than you know.Fingerhut is a well known Socialist. His objective and former fuehrer Ted Strickland isto push their socialist ideas on the populace. Their world view is that they know betterthan you do what is good for you. Think this through without the blinders and rose colored glasses of socialism. Megauniversities are at best a hair-brained idea. At worst, a means to control thought. Why who needs two or more competing ideas to build an airplane, an Internet, awashing machine? Competition is the antisis of socialism. It scares them to death.Have we brain washed students to the point that they no longer think for themselves? What kind of university system turns out autotrons? Why, the kind you are advocating.notes: 1) The NAZI's were Socialists, not "right wingers". 2) You all love and admire the University of Phoenix. Right? 3) I recently purchased a toilet seat for my home. Cost: $9.87 at Home Depot. And, it was not the cheapest model available. 4) Winston Churchill is quoted as saying, "if you are not a Liberal at age twenty you have no heart. If you are not a Conservative by age forty, you have no brains." (both Fingerhut and Strickland are past age forty).
  5. With New Mexico at sixteen we can expect a tough match Friday.Time for the AK-Rowdies to shine.
  6. Dave, ahem, Fingerhut is all about politics. He is a socialist. Check his record.
  7. I, for one, think the Fingerhut plan is STUPID.He is a control freak socialist with zero comprehension of personality, competition and pride.Let Mr. Fingerhut sell his ideas and implement them in Chapel Hill NC. Show us how well thisworks by merging North Carolina, NC State, Duke, Wake Forest, and the several lesser knownuniversities in an area the size of north east Ohio. See if that works then come back here andsell this idiocy. The pennies saved by combining core courses, fields of study, etc. would be dwarfed bythe costs in time, energy and even lives. Stupid is as stupid does (a quote from aUniversity of Alabama graduate).
  8. Keener, good observations. This silence will continue until one of two things happen. The Zips start winning (not likely) or the coach and his staff are replaced by competent men. From what I can gather standing at a short distance it seems that the defense is decent. Thenon-existent offense eventually causes the defense to wear down. This should be correctable if the coaching staff actually recognizes and addresses the problem.I confess that I did not buy season tickets for a second year as Iprotest by staying away. Thiswas by all accounts a terrible hiring decision. An incompetent, ill prepared coach better learn fast. The damage done by this blunder will linger for years. Iprotest this so called great recruiter whohas thus far recruited no one of note. I contend it is the name recognizable school and not the so called talent of a single man to get the really good players to sign on. Let's see this great talentpromised to us. hint: it ain't gonna happen. At the MAC level you need decent talent (of which Akron had) and a lot of hard work to succeed. The best thing to do is fess up, replace the coaching staff with a proven winner, recruit MAC qualitytalent and then slog on.
  9. Going to your link I get a "sorry, that page does not exist" msg. So, what did the msg say?
  10. Care to explain what you mean?Gilliam is a guard, not a low post player. Chauncey does have excellent low post weak side help skills.Which translates as: unlike Brett McKnight, he can rebound the ball on weak side recovery.Since you must be watching "pick up" games, tell us how Tree is progressing. Is he pounding the boards?Or is he still getting muscled out? Would like to know. Tree could extend Akron's bench to nine men deep.
  11. It would seem to me that the emphasis for 2013 and 2014 is to recruit and sign several "bigs".While coaches are forever crying that you can never have too many guards, Akron will needto stock up on front court players in this time frame.I got a kick out of Cap'n's, tongue in cheek remark about looking for replacementsfor Walsh and Gilliam. Reality is that the coaching staff is always keeping an eye five, six even seven years down the road. Its all part of the operation.
  12. Not likely. NC State is playing in the Legends Classic in the same time frame.North Carolina Central?
  13. The John Carroll game is a true "exhibition" game. That is, it does not count win or lose. Most Div-1 teams tune up on one or two Div-2 or Div-3 teams in the preseason.Akron will play only one exhibition game as they will hold a closed scrimmage at homeagainst Eastern Kentucky a few days before the JCU game. The Hiram game is placed where it is to allow the coaching staff to correct any problemsfound during the Mississippi State game.Dave in Green has a good handle on what is happening with the 2K Sports Classic. All three of the games after the MSU game will be played at Valparaiso. I am racking my brainfor the name of the third opponent. I am not sure that I ever knew it in the first place. The kids just need to keep working and take all these games one at a time.Like most of you, I long to see quality opponents in the JAR. It is a tough sell. Coaches do notlike to go on the road and lose. Look at theeOSU. You can bet that any away game (and therewill only be a couple) will be against ranked opponents. Reason: no shame in losing to a Top 25team on the road.DistrictBaller is correct that VCU will not schedule us. KD is willing, Shaka is not. Go figure.
  14. I agree. Coach I does what he does in that he runs a pro style offense in an era when everyone who wants to get good runs some sort of spread with a quick footed QB. I'm sure he made no bones about what he wanted to do when he came to Akron. I have no personal animosity towards Coach I, and I really don't care what he looks like. When you hire the guy, you get the style. It is the fault of the AD who hires the guy who brings the style. TW has not been good for Akron football since the day he walked in the door and destroyed any hope for the first year of The Big Dialer. He hasn't gotten any better and at the end of this season, we MAY be in a position where the program is in worse shape than when TW took over. Everyone think about that..... Especially you Dr. Proenza....you build the stadium and give us this? Fix it!!!! GP1, writes the truth. TW is responsible. Looks like he took the coward's way out by hiring his buddy from the past. Any well grounded football coach could have told TW that Ianello is not head coach material. His resume is worse than Brookhart's was. Speaking of Brookhart we can recall that it took him four years to get his sea legs. Forget the 2005 run, that was done with Lee Owens kids. For the icoach wonks: he is no great recruiter. That blue satchel with the gold letters "ND" is. Can Akron afford four more years of disaster? Not likely. Firing Ianello needs to coupled with firing Uncle Tom. I for one, desperately want an Akron man as my AD. You know...I normally enjoy reading your posts...especially in basketball. But why call fellow Zips 'wonks" or "wanks"?? And calling a the AD a"coward" is over the top too. Wish you would refrain from the name calling and keep with your normally solid analysis. Doug, you are right. I changed my post to refer to icoach supporters. After all, it is refreshing to see that some folks still have faith in his abilities. Sadly, after years of frustration, I do not. As for calling TW a coward; I did not actually say that. I thought and still think that TW took an easy path by hiring his friend. Now, that might be okay if the friend was qualified. Ianello is not. GP1 hit it spot on when he stated "lazy". TW should have formed a search committee and actually sought out the best available candidate. He did no such thing. The decision to hire Ianello was not well thought out. It was more like patronage. The best interests of the University of Akron were not in play. I stand corrected.

  16. If the Zips are playing at Middle Tennessee that would complete the 2011-12 OOC schedule. Expect the schedule to be released this week. This had better be a home-n-home series. MTSU is a pretty fair Sun Belt opponent. The December 4th date fits the Dec 3 time frame I previously wrote about.
  17. Any player who has the surname of Wood is bound to excel in a Zips uniform. Welcome aboard, Jasmine Wood.
  18. Now, all you Ianello wanks ... learn anything?
  19. You're an old fart, right? Remember when Hiram almost took down Bob Huggins' Zips at the JAR? It was something like 56-55? Terriers were led by the Fabry brothers from Windham, who stroked a bunch of 3's against the listless Zips. Yes, I remember that near disaster. Sniff, sniff. Old, yes; fart, no. That's Ben-Gay you smell.
  20. trimmy, The Hiram game is part of the regular season. It is scheduled as the second game of the season right after the team gets home from Mississippi. The preseason exhibition game is against John Carroll. When I asked "why Hiram"? I was told to look up Marion (Ind.) College. Last year or recently they nearly beat Butler. Butler is playing them again this year. Remember Findlay taking down the mighty Suckeyes? Thad Matta does. Coaches lose jobs losing these filler games. The Hiram game will allow the coaches to fix problems discovered at Mississippi State.
  21. Charlie Frye leading the Zips to an upset of then #25 Marshall. The game that only Hurd players carrying Leftwich to the line so he could throw a key inception got any TV play. Darron Alcorn kicking a 56 yard NCAA record tying field goal to defeat Toledo. The incredible fourth quarter at NC State. Any win of Cant State. My personal favorite being the infamous Thanksgiving day Snow Bowl. Okay, that's four. So shoot me, I'm old and have more memories.
  22. The schedule should be released any day now. The hold up has been trying to get a game for December 3rd. Other than that, the schedule is completed. By the way, the non-Division one opponent is ..... Hiram. (gag) Cleveland State, Duquense, Valpo, Mississippi State, Arkansas-Pine Bluff are a few more of the OOC games.
  23. They did just to make the NY Times look bad. You know how those Texans operate! I think you're on to something! I frequent an online football chat room operated by SEC fans. The buzz there for the past couple of weeks is that it is a done deal that Texas A&M is leaving the Big (sic) 12 for the SEC. A couple of room regulars are fans of teams still in the Big 10/12 remnants. They are fearful that the whole conference will collapse. A couple of wags have been suggesting to one popular Kansas State lady fan that K-State bail for the Mid-American. The chat room is on PalTalk in the adult section and is titled "Talking College Football". Its free to join. Warning: you need a thick skin to survive the many lame barbs cast at any non-SEC school fan. Akron has some creds as I have been there since before we upset North Carolina State and Syracuse. I get teased a lot about soccer. But, they do respect our National Championship.
  24. Walsh and Gilliam have yet to play even a minute of basketball for the Zips, and you're already thinking about their replacements? That's hard-core. Did we find out for sure how many years Walsh has to play yet? He said he was a junior, but web said 3 yrs remaining. According to a recent discussion with KD, Walsh is playing as a sophomore. That means he has three years eligibility at Akron. Walsh is currently penciled in as the "sixth" man
  25. Of the above 3 mentioned schools, Michigan is the only one we're not rivals with. Remember, anytime you see a Columbus State shirt around the Akron area, with a healthier Akron, that would/could/should be a Zips t-shirt. Most from the Akron area identify themselves more with either Cleveland or Columbus. This is a reality which is "off-the-charts" unhealthy & detrimental for an area's psyche & self-image. It's an uphill battle, but we've gotta make people from the Akron area proud to be from the Akron area. OSU would squash us like a cockroach if they could. So would Cleveland. Akronites unite! Fight the power. Blue & Gold, I am standing with you. What spectrum are you speaking of. Pilgrim? If you are referring to I-A football the Zips scared the crap out of our friends the Suckeyes on several occasions. The wrong end of the spectrum Zips enjoy football victories over the likes of North Carolina State (who three weeks later beat Florida State) and the hapless big Orange of Syracuse. These wins coming in recent years; not 1927. Men's basketball? Balless Thad does it madda wont even play the Zips. See if you can get your pal to man up and strap on the wrong end of the spectrum Zips. Soccer? Last season the sucks packed their soccer stadium with the largest crowd in the history of their program when they played Akron. Thanks to fumble brained Zips goalie (who shall remain nameless because I have a low opinion of his skill set) the Sucks squeaked out a two-two tie. The Sucks fans reacted like they had just won the national championship. Oh, by the way, the Zips did win the National Championship later in the season. So much for the wrong end of the spectrum. As for rooting for the Sucks and the Zips, on this board you'd find more friends if you were a maize and blue fan.
