  1. SHAME. obama was elected President of the United States. He is not a dictator or kingeven if he wants to be.Bow only to the risen Lord Jesus Christ. Never bow to an evil man. And, I assure you, obama is an evil man.To call obama "lord" is disgusting. There needs to be a sarcasm font here. I was just acting like the illiterate, non working class of America that voted this POS into office. Oh, I forgot, It's Bush's fault. Just wanted to get that in there first. BuckZip, I agree. A sarcasm font would go a long way toward clarification.I see enough on Military Channel to realize that if ordinary Germans had stood up to Hilterin the beginning he never would had the power to nearly destroy the world.I am honest in my views. I dislike Mr. obama not because of who he is, but because of whathe espouses. He is virulently anti-life and seems to hate America. And, frankly, that scares me.

  3. Actually, discussing politics is for adults. From what I read on this board, most of you have a ways to go before reaching adulthood.Being a combat veteran over the age of 25 I would like to see the vote ONLY in the hands ofadults. That means, no kids. When I was young the minimum voting age was 21. The Foundersset the voting age at 25. PLUS, you had to be property owner. I think they had it right.Remember this .... black males of age were given the vote many years before any female wasenfranchised.Voting is privilege, not a right. Many, many people in this nation have a rather twisted andconfused understanding of rights, duties, privileges and obligations. Shame on us.
  4. There will NEVER be an arena that can combo basketball and hockey at UA as long ascoach Dambrot is the head coach. Hockey arenas DESTROY the intimate contact so important for home court advantage.Perhaps you and willy washy mayor Piss-queak want hockey; the basketball program does NOT.Be a good Lib and squander a couple of hundred million on a civic arena. Meanwhile UA will builda basketball arena on campus.
  5. That's gotta be the best prepared interviewer in history! Some history I wasn't aware of -- for example Bob Rupert being KD's high school coach (did he play bb in HS?) at Firestone. I vaguely remember Rupert coaching in the area before getting the Baldwin Wallace job prior to being the worst coaching decision I can recall UA making. It's fascinating that without that coincidence, he may have never entered coaching. Can anyone remember Keith's baseball history? I thought he was a catcher, but the story says he played 3rd. I may have seen 3 or 4 games during our undergrad years together, but have no memory of him. I do remember that I went to the games to see the best pitcher in the OVC, Mike Birkbeck.I tried to do a little research for you, Island Man . But THIS is the 1st thing I managed to find! It's from well before my time at ZipsNation. Looks like this conversation has been had before? There's some pretty funny stuff in that old thread.I knew Rupert was at Canton McKinley prior to UA. But I couldn't remember if he came directly from there ????Personally I do not remember much about coach Rupert other than he managed to get a mediocre team put on probation for a grades scandal. Just kick Rupert to curb and move along.I see one huge, glaring hole in coach Dambrot's pre-evaluation of how he would run his teamAnd that is, where in the hell is the ninety-four foot defense he spoke of? In recent seasons KD has gradually extended the defense to almost, but not quite, foul line extended.Kevin Mackay ran a ninety-four defense that drove Cleveland State opponents nuts. CSU frequentlybeat and some times even destroyed teams they had no business whipping. The old "run 'n stun"worked well because coach Mackay recruited athletes over basketball players. I am hopeful that KD finally has the athletes to run down the opposition. And the depth to have adeep rotation. 2011-12 is going to be a fun season.p.s. That GoZips was me. I interviewed coach Dambrot right after the luncheon. I barely knewKD at the time. Like some one mentioned, KD is a natural born interview giver.
  6. While this may sound far fetched at this time ... mark my words ... these four players could allbe starters by MAC tournament time.
  7. This attitude stinks IMO. I hope the team proves you wrong. He would have been much better off saying he didn't want the QB to get hurt in a meaningless game, which the vast majority of BCS vs non-BCS games are (with the exception of the pile of cash that lands in the non-BCS teams' banks). When is the last time an Akron QB got hurt against a BCS team? Play to win. Think NC State. Now there there was one of the most fun games I ever attended on the road. Right up there with the last second win over NIU for the MAC Championship at Ford Field.
  8. I don't know where Zeke will be when the season gets here, but last week he said that he weighed in @ 235 lbs trying to get to 240 - 245.This is good news. Grow Zeke, grow.
  9. That's amazing, as I attended both of those -- First game, I think was vs Philadelphia Textile, the second game in 1970 in Evansville, IN. The opponents were called the greatest small college basketball team ever, coming in, and left with one defeat. Amazingly, the NCAA Finals opponent, Roanoke lost their top scorer in the semis, for fighting, but used the emotion to play a great title game against a tired Akron team which played OT the night before. I have a great memory for having been a toddler at the time. cough, cough
  10. Morehead St. in 1986. Only title won in the building. It was Middle Tennessee. But I agree with you, with one exception. No better environment, or game.....ever....that can top the game against Cleveland State at the beginning of the following season. Both teams had just come off of an NCAA appearance. You had to be there an hour early just to get a seat in GA. People were sitting in the aisles and on the track before the game even started. We were on our feet the entire game, and it was an overtime contest. Zip37....Nice to see that others were instantly reminded of this game as well. Ah ... fond memories in the JAR .... I agree that the win over Cleveland State before the largest crowd ever let in the place was the greatest game. The "official" attendance is listed around 8,100. The actual attendance was over 10,000. And, yes, the aisles were packed with people. The upper chair backs were not yet installed, so many bodies were crammed in together. The police turned away over a 1,000 people; many holding pre-purchased reserved seats. In that game the coaches had determined via watching film (not tape in those days) that McFadden had trouble dribbling to his left (which later kept him out of the NBA). So, the player guarding McFadden (several were used) shaded to his right forcing him to go left. Eventually he fouled out of the game with his fifth foul being a frustration foul. It was a GREAT win for the Zips. I have two personal favorite moments. One involves the afore mentioned Kerry Hammonds. During the championship game between Akron and Middle Tennessee, Hammonds was guarded by Doug Shutz and Chris Kelly (a Zips football player). During the first half Hammonds took the liberty of laying a cheap shot on Doug Shutz sending "Shooter" to the hospital for stitches. Shutz returned during the second half. As soon as he got back in the game during a momentary lull in play Shutz hammered Hammonds a hard right to head. As Hammonds fell to the floor the entire arena could hear Shutz yell at Hammonds. "I'm NOT Chris Kelly, you son of a bitch". A technical foul was assessed and play continued. No one was ejected. My other favorite JAR moment was more personal to me. I attended a game with a dear friend of mine. Bill "Moon" Strickland, the well known owner of Moon's after hours bar on Rhodes Ave. Moon was about seventy at this time. As the national anthem was being played it was popular among the black students to sit with their hats on during the playing of the anthem. "Moon" being a black combat veteran of World War 2 took this personal. He walked down a couple of rows and grabbed two black students up out of their seats by their shirt collars. He then gave them "what for" on account of their lack of respect. He was visibly crying as he told them that many of his own black friends DIED in the war so they could have the privilege of attending a basketball game. People clapped and cheered Moon as he came back to his seat. Many of the black students in attendance that night came over to Moon and expressed their apology's INCLUDING the two kids he hoisted. Moon was a DAMNED good friend of mine. He died in 1985. I was a pall bearer for him. I'm white; not that it matters. That was the last time in my life that I cried as I helped honor Bill "Moon" Strickland by carrying his body.
  11. Priceless ... !!!!
  12. Can't guy? His resume' states that he played ball at Miami and graduated from Akron? What former Cant coach(es) ever came over to Zippyland and "pushed down" the Zips program? I count as one of my personal friends a long time former baseball coach at Akron. Pretty easy to figure out who if you are so inclined. His complaint about Akron was the "hind teat" syndrome. That is, the university did little or nothing to promote baseball during his tenure. Made recruiting impossible. Made winning impossible. Let us hope that coach Rembielak is provided with the tools to win. Pixy dust wont do the job. BTW, the last time I watched baseball at Akron was while sitting in aluminum bleachers. Grassy knoll? Were you in Dallas?
  13. Solid resume'. The kind of hire UA must have.
  14. +1. Let us set the record straight. Dr. Porenza has to rely on advisers. They fed him a bad lob. Wistrcill has been mediocre at best. His huge failing was to hire a "friend" (a safe route?) as opposed to doing research and finding the best available candidate. Wistrcill failed miserably to study the recent history of Akron football coaches. Most specifically the failure to see that J D Brookhart was hired with a blank resume and failed terribly. Wistrcill managed to repeat this blunder. Not when the great head coach at Grand Valley State and Luke Fickle of tOSU were available. Bad. A really bad decision. The University of Akron badly needs an Athletic Director that loves the university. That means an AD that can not be lured away for shekels. An AD who is in it for the long haul. Our AD position needs to stop being a stepping stone.
  15. Not me. Have never made such an outlandish claim. Zeke's physical maturation is lagging way, way too much at this point. Beside's, Zeke as a senior should be an Akron delight.
  16. It begins with coaching. Of which, there is none. The part that deeply saddens me is that several years ago Akron chose a man who had a blank resume'. They got battered for this blunder. Two years ago the brain trust made the same blunder. The definition of insanity is to repeat over and over the same actions and expect a different outcome. Which also sums up why our national economy is so bad.
  17. You're right, I've never seen him play in person. I always thought what happens on TV is an exact reflection of what goes on in person. Please tell me how my post was bashing. I didn't say he was a bad player. In fact, he is a very good player. All I said was I didn't think he would make the NBA. The NBA is EXTREMELY difficult to make a living in. Professional sports in general are extremely difficult to make a living in. Lots of really good players, like Zeke, never make it. Thank you and have a nice day. GP1, perhaps you are correct in your assessment of Zeke. After all, Zeke is a long drink of water through a thin straw. He is clumsy and still often exhibits growing pains. That said; look at his upside. Zeke works his tail off. He seems to get along with all of his team mates and exhibits leadership characteristics. Frankly, Zeke just needs a chance to grow into his full potential. When men like Billy Donavan of Florida and Bob Huggins, and Shaka Smart tell me that Zeke has all the tools and that coach Dambrot is doing a great job of nurturing and developing Zeke's skills I am left in a quandary. Do I accept the posts of casual fans or the face to face conversations of coaches who have been to the Final Four and one of them WON the NCAA tournament not once, but twice? I hate to name drop. But at this point I need some creds. And, I think these coaches substantiate my views. Thank you, and a grand day to you as well, Sir.
  18. This seems personal. Why do people on this board feel they should bash (since you like the word) those with differing viewpoints. In this case...you misinterpreted my viewpoint. But even if I did believe Zeke would not make it as a pro, I don't think I should be criticized by you. Make your case why you feel otherwise and keep the personal attacks out. Grow up and learn to see other viewpoints (what do you think...like being told to grow up??) I normally think you are a rational poster, So I am going to take this as a knee jerk reaction to something, and someone, you feel strongly about. But I believe you went to far. Doug, I was not refering to you or your posts. I was refering to the entire vein of the posts in general. People, perhaps you as well, tend to under value Zeke's contributions to the cause. I am well aware of other people's viewpoints. This is an Akron board and I, for one, do not think that trashing Zeke unfairly is appropriate. Zeke will deliver. At this stage of Zeke's development the glaring problem is foul trouble. A fair part of that is playing in a league where truly big men are uncommon. The game officials seem to have a quick whistle when it comes to Zeke. Perhaps I am wrong. It sure seems that way. Zeke faired far better in the MAC championship game and the game against Notre Dame when it came to fouls. Those two games were far more representative of what he and the team should expect from game officials. Enough of the ticky-tacky fouls. Zeke does not have to score like Wilt Chamberlain to be an effective post player. Zeke is there to shot block, alter attacks on the basket, intimidate and secondarily rebound and score. A few assists help as well. I believe that people will be pleasantly surprised by Zeke's play in 2011-12.
  19. Wow .... !!!!! Forget the LeBron bashers. We have Zeke Marshall bashers in our own midst. First we have GP1, who has never even seen Zeke play in the flesh declaring that Zeke is unfit for the NBA. And, others claiming this and that about the kid that he can not cut the NBA mustard. Get a life. Zeke will play in the NBA if he wants. He has all the tools. What's more, his maturation is kicking in and he will not be a 218# string bean. By the end of the 2011-12 season Zeke will be filled out and a literal beast on the court. Zeke showed his skill set and potential in the MAC Championship game. That was not a fluke. That was Zeke coming to play. You will see a lot more of the same in the 2011-12 season. A well known college basketball coach (not on the Akron staff) told me that Zeke will have a nice career in the NBA. I agree. Grow up and find something more positive to rattle your heads about.
  20. I suppose that this is an indictment as to how weak this draft is.
  21. There is some smoke here. That tournament seems to fit what I know. And, St. John's is a name I have heard mentioned. Stay tuned.
  22. He's actually a Lobo, but it's a funny story nonetheless How many people recall the old Zippers whipping BOTH the Aggies (in the Rubber Bowl) AND the Lobos (AT Albuquerque to boot!) in the Faustian days? Wow, this brings back memories. I attended both games. The Zips ripped the Aggies a new one in the Rubber Bowl. 55-8 if my memory serves me. It was a bit tougher out in Albuquerque. The Zips lead most of the game only to fall behind in the last minute. A Lobos fan sitting near us moaned that the Lobos would find a way to lose. And, lose they did. Akron drove the length of the field to kick a game winning field goal with bare seconds to play. We, my family, made the New Mex game part of our vacation that year spending two weeks driving all around the four corners region. Great scenery. New Mexico literally did not believe in road signs so navigating was a challenge.
  23. Preseason NIT? Would be awesome if the men's team was invited, as the women's team already has been to the Preseason WNIT. Sorry, Dave in Green, not once have I heard or seen anything remotely connsected to a pre-season NIT invite. The game at Mississippi State is part of the early season exempt tournament the Zips are playing in.. And depending upon the brackets, we might not even meet Mississippi State (a la Alaska a couple seasons ago). CK, the game with Mississippi State is set. It will be Akron's first game of the season. caveat: things change.

  25. lilroodude has the best understanding of what the next season portents. Nearly all of you would agree that Quincy Diggs was Akron's best athlete last season. Hold on to your hats. Q will be the third best athlete in 2011-2012. And considering that he is gettiing better over the summer, that should give you a clue as to what is coming. Next season's team has the clear potential to be the very best team in the history of UA. What a lot of you are missing the point on is that this team is chuck full of athletes. They will be capable of running most opponents right off the court. Surprise, surprise old GoZips is right. LOL I like your optimism and agree with a lot you say. But PLEASE... don't pull a CK and start giving yourself credit for prognostication before the deed is done. ;-) It is a little tough to procastinate after the deed is done. I take no credit for the expected future team performance. I can only report what I learn and observe. And, not even all of that.
