Captain, I not only noticed Pitt was struggling against Furman, but took it one leap further and wondered if JD was a big part of their past success.
-
BZ, that was not a joke. It wasn't even tongue in cheek. It was a direct, full-fledged, poor sportsmanship, after they kicked our butts slam. I can see why the posters on their board are embarrassed. Wow. What a brat. He better be a freshman or sophomore or else he's an idiot as well: Charlie lit up the field at Virginia just two short seasons ago....as a sophomore to boot. What a fine representative of the Virginia students. I don't care what his SAT was - they can have him.

You are a doofus. We should be 1-2 right now. Instead we are 0-3. At this time, we are off on our expected record by all of one game. I hope someone remembers several of us predicting - last fall - that our record wouldn't be too good this year. Let me remind you we were 7-5 last year WITH POSSIBLY THE EASIEST SCHEDULE IN THE ENTIRE DIVISION 1-A WORLD. We played TWO 1-AA teams. Our division crossover games were EMU and CMU - the two worst West Division teams, and remember, we had a little trouble at CMU at that. This year - Penn State and Virginia, and crossover games are NIU and Ball State and no patsy 1-AA teams. Please, Capital Z Zipper, promise me that when Brookhart makes good here at Akron you won't be around. You redefine the term "fair weather". As someone reminded me yesterday, Tressel was 2-9 in his first year at YSU. You probably would have fired him after one season. Brookhart gets three years. Not three games. Get a grip.

I can get on fine. Just was there this a.m. They were down for a day last week I think - but don't know if that can screw with your comp or not. This is the link - I think it's the same: http://www.ncaabbs.com/forums/mac/invision/

After two days to step away from the loss: It's three things: 1) the new schemes. I know if LO was still here and we'd kept things as they were, we probably would have beat MTSU. The players were very familiar with the systems. They worked. Sometimes. They were experts at them. That doesn't mean LO's schemes were better than JD's - especially in the long run. Learning new systems ain't rocket science but it's no cakewalk, either. And you can know it on paper and in practice and it looks and feels pretty different when you're not going against the scout team. The kids are learning the new applications. It's just not going to happen overnight. It is DEFINITELY better for Charlie and his future to be learning the West Coast Offense. And I can't believe I'm saying this about a Zips team, but I saw some flushes of light in the defense. And to the guy complaining about the new DC - I remember reading his bio somewhere and the guy was considered a defensive expert until he got to NC. As a Div 1-aa head coach he took a pretty sorry team and went 21-1 in his two years there. And we see how much NC has improved now that he's gone after last Saturday's drubbing by Virginia (tongue firmly planted in cheek). I have hope for this new defense. 2) Errors. Are the turnovers because we just aren't sure what we're doing out there yet? Probably. Got to tighten it up. More confidence = fewer turnovers. 3) Speed. I can see why JD wants to recruit speed over skill. You can't teach speed. On defense we are often just not able to stay with our opponents or get to them on time. We lag. Hang in there fellow Zip fans. We have to be in this for the long haul. This weekend most likely won't be pretty and I can easily see us starting 0-4 for the season. But to be fair, while I was hopeful for this year because I wanted it so bad, I remember saying about a year ago, probably on this board, that we weren't going to do well this season no matter what. Much tougher schedule and greatly diminished recruiting the last two years as LO basically flailed about waiting for the ax to fall. I am disappointed but have hope. Out.

Zips to Get Pitt Transfer QB?
zipper replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
zff, I agree with you. I think it reeks. We should bombard Pitt's board - not that it would do any good. If I were that kid's folks I'd be all over Harris. I can't believe he would exercise that much control over a kid's entire future. What a baby. Are we even scheduled to play Pitt anytime in this kid's career? I hope he bombs this year and gets canned. Anyone that small doesn't deserve to win big. -
So much to do, so little time. It's hard to guess what people are interested in, but the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame is right up the road in Cleveland. Pro Football Hall of Fame is always a good idea, too. Piscatelli's is a nice restaurant right by the Rubber Bowl. You can watch the planes land at our small airstrip there - and gawk at the blimp hanger. Ask for a view when you make the reservation. Jillians is casual fun atmosphere - pool, drinks, burgers etc. - sports bar feel. It's on Main street downtown not far from the University. There are a number of upscale clubs and restaurants downtown - the "feel" of downtown Akron has really changed in the last few years. Two Amigos in Highland Square (on W. Market) is about five minutes from downtown and excellent Mexican. If you love good reasonable Italian, Luigi's is an Akron landmark. There WILL be a wait at the door. Go ahead and wait. It moves very quickly. The bread is fresh - and get the salad with cheese on it. Spaghetti Warehouse is right downtown and good, too. I'm sure everyone else on here has other ideas. Sorry about your loss, but welcome to Akron!

I think she replaced the other guy coach - not Lanier. I agree this is a big time hire - read it on gozips.com and was pretty impressed. This is such a slow process but they really were in the dregs before KK got here. I get to a ladies game or two every year (last year hit three I think) and have been impressed with the improvement, even though it hasn't transferred into a huge W-L difference yet. If you guys haven't been to a women's bb game yet you ought to try it. It was included in the season tickets this year. Of course the crowd is smaller but the Zips play with great intensity. Fun to watch, easy parking, and I'd think easier to take kids to.

Old Zip, here's a question I thought of. Hipsher was fired last year, too, he has said he was told by MT -- IN PERSON. Why would MT fire LO any different? And there's a comparision: Lee Owens versus Dan Hipsher. Dan had trouble controlling himself on the court a little, but you'd never meet a more upright guy. He continues to conduct himself with class, even though he was also "reassigned". I'm sure he wasn't too happy to be let go or be replaced by his assistant, but you just don't see him stoop to this level. It's called character, and apparently he's secure enough to know he doesn't have to make up stories to save face. What a contrast. I'm a Hipsher fan and hope he lands on his feet. It seems likely MT has a great working relationship with Dr. P. and the board of trustees, or they'd never be getting all this stuff done for athletics. My only criticism of him was that the firing didn't happen a year earlier. I didn't think LO deserved another chance. As far as the schedule, MT handed LO at least a 9-3 season on a platter and he couldn't get the job done. What do you think he would have done with a tougher schedule??? You say you're "concerned" for the program. I'll tell you what should have been your concern -- it was unfair to those kids to have to go out there with LO and bust their asses every day and never get a real chance to win big. Okay, that's it, I'm off this ridiculous thread. In JD I trust!
-
Our former football coach not only hung himself, but he made the noose and threw it over the tree. The only people who don't appreciate what MT has brought to Akron are the die hard friends of the two head coaches he's had to fire. Which leads me to think you're LO's wife or son hanging around here again, or maybe LO himself. Let it go man! Move on.

Another Buchtel Kid Gone to Pitt...
zipper replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football Recruiting
A. And I hate to say it, but Pitt may not be what it was in years past when Brookhart was the OC there. He personally led two Belitnikoff winners. He is the reason Pitt was recently tagged as "Wide Receiver U". Time will tell. And this is probably more a kid exercising their option to go BCS. -
Roger Winters, or is it Roger Owens?
zipper replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
That's not AO. That's a former coach - or possibly the son of a former coach. Go away. Unless, of course, you promise to come back to this board in two years and eat your proverbial crow, which I'm sure you WON'T do. So I'll just say see ya and have fun down at Division II. -
Don[t forget Rifle. While not as well known as some of the other sports, Rifle continues to excel year in and year out.
-
I am inclined to give the admin the benefit of the doubt. I would assume there is more to this "resignation" (if that's not what it really was) than we will probably ever know. Has anyone talked to any of the players?
-
It's just the time of year. Everything's pretty dead. Hang in there - things will get better in, oh, about eight weeks. I personally like the new board and the format.
-
Don't know the why or the how, but in checking out the boards of some of our opponents I noticed thesabre.com still lists zipsnation.com - the old board - as our site. Just an fyi.

There is no way the pink jerseys would ever happen. Yes, we'd get publicity, but it'd be like an award for severe stupidity. UA and Can't State would be laughingstocks. We don't need that kind of press, much as we might wish it on Can't. I could be wrong but I think since the new logos were introduced Akron actually has a different gold. You'd think Akron U student writers might actually KNOW that. Can't State and Toledo have the same colors. I heard our gold change was by design - Akron wanted to be set apart from the other two or something like that. Maybe it was to help sales - trust UAM to think of every angle. Imho, the new gold on the unis is much more current, anyway, and very sharp.

To compare apples to apples, the question you'd have to ask is what would JD and Co. have done with last year's talent and last year's schedule. We can obviously never know the answer to that question, much as we might all speculate. But from what I've heard, the PLAYERS believe this coaching staff is much better, from Charlie on down. There is no way around next fall's tougher schedule. If there's one position we could stand to be "down" in at the beginning of this season, it's WR, just because JD obviously knows how to develop raw talent into great receivers. I'll say one thing - I've been introduced to JD and heard him speak a couple of times. He is all business. After LO I find this refreshing, but I always bought into Lee's hype and thought every year was going to be "the" year. I guess I'm glad to be going into a football season with no expectations, for once. I support the new staff, and I have to say it feels kind of good to not have a fear of a letdown, yet again. I won't be surprised if we win several more than we lose, but at least I'm not set up for a fall, either.
-
But then why was I warned but not the originator of the post, Z-P?
-
Hey! Why do I have a warning next to my "tag"? And I'm going back to MACbbs when the season starts to see what they're saying about us, and to possibly defend the Zips' honor, if necessary And have you ever been to JJHuddle? I'm debating whether or not to pay the ten bucks to register, but the faculty athletic rep from Ashland (he admits this- goes by Haammy or something like that) posts on JJHuddle college sections and he dogged our new basketball coach big time on the college basketball page. I'm sure he'll have a lot to say during football season, as well, since he's all goosed up to have LO as their coach.

I'm scared too. The only difference, and it is a very big one, between Britain's war with Turkey and this one is Turkey wasn't killing thousands of people in Britain in terrorist strikes. It is a little more difficult to apply the lessons of the past to the situation today. This is different, much as we'd like to forget 9/11 and just ignore the future threat. Sometimes I think GW should just say, okay we'll pull out. And then, in a few months or years, when there is ANOTHER massive terrorist strike, maybe this time in LA or Chicago, everyone might agree we need to fight terrorism. I don't know how many US civilian deaths it would take for maybe 80% of the country to get together on this. I do know this war is being politicized by both sides because of the election year. I do believe the only way to fight terrorism is for the middle east to be settled and probably democracized. The only real question is if it is even possible. And if it's not possible, well God help us all, because terrorist groups are not going to leave the US alone, I can promise you that.
-
Z-P, I'm not going to give you flack, but if you'd hung around awhile you'd have heard JD come to the mic, in the dark, to thank the crowd for coming. My guess is that due to the lights blowing with two minutes left in the game - it threw him off a little. Just an FYI.
-
Rat you must have either a crystal ball or an inside track, because I heard that they WERE going to feature C. Frye and J. Heisman in their promo pieces. Not sure if that's true, my source knows a source, etc. etc. but that was something I heard. Love the idea about promoting UA as the hometown team. Sometimes people just need to be reminded.
-
Not sure but I think he meant 13 to 14 PLAYERS, not next season's record.
-
As I understand it, the kid can shoot the lights out. Dru's not too big, either, but get him open and....
