Interesting article in today's Plain Dealer...your thoughts?Merge Cleveland State and U of Akron? That's the buzzPosted by Janet Okoben September 20, 2007 23:42PMCategories: Education, ImpactAn idea to shake up the state's college system could combine Cleveland State University and the University of Akron and bring a medical school to downtown Cleveland. Some of the talk involves moving the Northeastern Ohio Universities Colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy, known as NEOUCOM, from Portage County or expanding its Rootstown-based campus.• Compare the three schools.Combining CSU and UA would eliminate overlapping programs and administrative jobs, and the two schools would then function under a single leader. The two people with the ability to make these ideas happen, Gov. Ted Strickland and his higher-education chancellor, Eric Fingerhut, would not comment Thursday on what others familiar with the discussions say has a real chance of happening.Fingerhut is in the midst of developing a master plan for the state's higher-education system, which was recently named the University System of Ohio.He did acknowledge that big changes are needed here. "There's pretty broad consensus that the status quo in Northeast Ohio is not acceptable," Fingerhut said."The optimal solution will involve some significant changes to what we're currently doing because we're not getting the maximum benefit of the state's investment in higher education in Northeast Ohio."Fingerhut said he's listening to all ideas, but wouldn't talk about specifics."I'm not there yet, and in any event it would be a shared vision, not my own vision, because the only way to be successful is for it to be a shared vision among civic leaders and higher education leaders and community leaders in Northeast Ohio, so I work on it every day," Fingerhut said. "We're a ways off from having any recommendations."A state-funded public medical school could share research dollars and talent with the medical school at Case Western Reserve University, a private institution. It could build on the region's already strong hospitals and medical services.CSU President Michael Schwartz and UA President Luis Proenza both said they had heard a number of ideas involving their schools, but nothing definite. Proenza has written extensively on what he calls higher education as an industry in transition.A group called the Northeast Ohio Universities Collaboration and Innovation Study Commission has been meeting monthly since March to pitch ideas on improving higher education. The group, made up of university and business leaders, has until December to submit ideas to Fingerhut. One member, Cleveland businessman Richard Pogue, proposed relocating NEOUCOM to a major city.Strickland also would not comment on specifics, but said much change is possible."I am encouraging Eric to be creative in his approach and to not leave anything off the table necessarily at this stage," he said.View Plain Dealer Article

I don't know where you've ever worked (nor do I care), but if the person I reported to didn't know my name on the first day, I would quit. This is an NFL organization. You forget that the Seahawks traded for him, he wasn't placed on their team by the Browns...I think they know who he is.And, by the way, the job of the quarterbacks coach is to coach the quarterbacks (not just the starter).True that Charlie will have to earn a starting job, but he has a much better chance of succeeding somewhere other than Cleveland. To say that he has no shot at ever being a starting QB in the league would be selling him short.
-
Comparing Charlie Frye to a guy who has 1 pass attempt in the 5 years that he's played in the league as a 3rd and even 4th stringer is just ridiculous.Frye's situation in Seattle couldn't be better...he now has a chance to learn from a veteran QB with playoff experience and one of the best QB coaches in the league (Jim Zorn). This is something he never had the chance to get in Cleveland. Even if he doesn't stay with the Seahawks past this year, my guess is that he learns more in a couple of weeks than he did in his tenure with the Clowns.
-
Agreed...all that's left is the CFL and the crappy Arena Football League (which has "minor league" systems AF2 and National Indoor Football League).

Everyone's probably heard this story a million times (esp. if you've ever listened to John Madden announce a GB game), but had to correct anyway...Brett Favre was traded to GB after one year in ATL for a #1 pick - he was not cut. His rookie campaign, he went 0-5 with 2 interceptions. He even failed the physical when the trade happened, but GB approved the trade anyway. For the record, I think Charlie is a good pick-up for the Seahawks. Seems like they were pushing for Wallace to become more involved as a WR. With Bobby Engram and Nate Burelson as his competition and a possible shift of focus by Wallace, he could rise up the WR depth chart in a hurry (esp with their #2 receiver (Hackett) getting hurt Week 1)! This is a no-lose situation for Seattle...they give up basically nothing for a young guy with potential and experience. Seems like a no-brainer to me!!!

Looks like their official team site has him listed as #5: Seahawks Roster

Updating Charlie's first practice...Frank Hughes, of the Tacoma News Tribune, reports Seattle Seahawks QB Charlie Frye threw two interceptions during 7-on-7 drills Wednesday, Sept. 12. Frye also threw a deep touchdown pass during the practice.

Abram Elam picked up by Jets yesterday...The Jets have built a reputation for seeking players with solid backgrounds, but they signed a player yesterday - former Cowboys S Abram Elam - who has considerable baggage. In 2002, Elam was one of four Notre Dame players charged with sexually assaulting a female student. He was the only one of the four convicted of any charges - sexual battery, a felony. He was acquitted on the more serious charges of conspiracy to commit rape and criminal deviate conduct. He received an 18-month suspended sentence, two years probation and 200 hours of community service. Elam was thrown out of Notre Dame, resurfacing at Can't State. The Jets' security conducted a background check on Elam and concluded it was an isolated incident, a team spokesman said. -- NY Daily News Source

Seattle Times reports Frye to be 3rd stringer...http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/seah...seahawks11.htmlSeahawks are busy today...made a trade with TEN as well.

Now WTAM is saying that they’re “working on a trade.” They changed the story. Good work Trivisonno.

She's going to need that "Medical Alert Bracelet" when Chase gets done with her...

Frye traded according to WTAM. No further details. My guess would be Atlanta for a conditional pick. 6th or 7th round.

Don't bank on Miami as a possible place of employment. Coach Cameron LOVES both Green and Lemon (who he's coached in the past in Washington and San Diego). They also drafted John Beck in the second round this year and seem to like his his potential. No way they carry 4 QBs. ATL might be an option with their situation though. From all indications, looks like Zastudil will be healthy enough to punt this week and they will cut Ernster and carry 4 QBs (for now).

Domenik Hixon talked about the opening kickoff return of the second half, when Buffalo's Kevin Everett suffered a cervical spine injury while tackling Hixon. "Honestly, there was nothing out of the ordinary on the play," Hixon said. "I had no idea anything was wrong. He hit me, and then I was trying to get up myself. I didn't realize, see or hear anything. ... All I can do is pray for him now." -- Denver Post

Keeping this topic up-to-date...looks like Hixon grabbed the 4th WR spot and will start as the team's main kick returner. This article is from the Denver Post...I like the line, "Hixon took a reverse from Hackney and zipped 43 yards"Hixon, Clark catch key breaksDuo appear set for roster spotsBy Bill WilliamsonDenver Post Staff WriterArticle Last Updated: 08/31/2007 12:48:34 AM MDTThe final preseason game is all about the future. For Broncos receivers Domenik Hixon and Brian Clark, though, Thursday night was about showing that the future is now.Hixon and Clark appear set to be the Broncos' No. 4 and No. 5 receivers, and the team might not keep more than five receivers. The only chance for the team to keep six receivers appears to be if Quincy Morgan survives Saturday's final cut. But with Hixon emerging as the kick returner, the veteran Morgan could be in trouble. When the Broncos went to camp, there was concern about their depth at the lower part of the receiving rotation. However, Hixon and Clark had outstanding preseason performances. Worry appears to be decreasing.Cardinals vs. BroncosEarly in camp, it seemed certain Denver would scour the waiver wire for a veteran receiver. One name mentioned was Tampa Bay's Michael Clayton, a former first-round selection for the Buccaneers. But Hixon and Clark could keep Denver from adding to the corps, which is headlined by starters Javon Walker and Brandon Marshall (back in the team's good graces after performing well in practice and in games for the past three weeks) and No. 3 receiver Brandon Stokley.Even if veteran Rod Smith, who will spend at least the first six weeks of the regular season on the physically unable to perform list mending from surgery on his hip, doesn't come back, the team may be in good shape with the two second-year players. The emergence of Hixon and Clark led Denver to cut veterans David Kircus and David Terrell this week."We like our young receivers," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan recently said. "They have a lot of promise."Hixon and Clark did nothing to sway the team's good thoughts Thursday night in the preseason victory over Arizona.Hixon and Clark made their presence felt on the Broncos' final drive of the first quarter. On third-and-8, Clark caught a 16-yard pass from Darrell Hackney to the Denver 43. On the next play, Hixon took a reverse from Hackney and zipped 43 yards to the Cardinals' 14.The Broncos have had success with the receiver reverse with former receiver Ashley Lelie and Walker. Hixon gives the Broncos another option.Having Walker and Hixon on the field could give defenses headaches. Clark is proving to be a solid possession receiver."I'm just trying to do anything to make this team," Hixon said recently. "I'm very hungry."Both Clark and Hixon came out of Thursday's game with modest statistics. Clark had two receptions for 27 yards, and Hixon had a single reception for 7 yards.Hixon, a fifth-round pick in 2006, missed last season while recovering from a broken foot that he suffered before the draft. He was one of the stars of the offseason program, and he figures to be the kick returner.Clark, an undrafted player, finished last season on the 53-man roster. He was originally signed to the practice squad but was promoted because Green Bay was trying to sign him.It appears both aren't going anywhere else anytime soon. Looks like Marshall will start this week in Hixon's place...Marshall updateIn his third day of practice after missing the first 12 days of training camp, Brandon Marshall took his spot as the No. 2 receiver in the morning practice. Marshall also worked on punt returns. Veteran wide receiver Brandon Stokley did not practice. Domenik Hixon and Brian Clark were working with the second team while veterans Quincy Morgan and David Terrell were working with the third team. Source: http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_6634288Marshall runs with first teamBroncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall ran with the first-string offense on Wednesday and plans to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Cowboys. "I'll play this week," he tells the team's official web site. Marshall was out from the start of camp until August 10 due to a strained left thigh, but he claims to be fully healed at this point.
