  1. Probably true. But since the "next job" is usually a BCS gig that triples their salary, who can blame them? That's also good incentive for them to do a good job while they're here. Do you think Syracuse likes being left out of the NCAA's in successive years? How about Rutgers, who hired one of the better college basketball coaches in the nation...and the guy was barely getting into the NIT? I can't imagine a lot of the BE hoops teams being happy with the meat grinder that is BE basketball. At some point the A-10 and some of the "western" BE teams are going to form another league. True...but Memphis football would LOVE to be in the BE. And that is a major reason they'd move tomorrow if they could. Memphis basketball could handle the BE. My question is "Why shouldn't UA strive to improve?" Why can Boise State...Gonzaga...Cincinnati (the school was athletically irrelevant for 25 years until Huggins arrived)...improve their lot, but UA should stand still?Believe me, after going 5-6 and 4-8 in the MAC I'm by no means saying we'd be immediately competitive in BE football. But with the right commitment, it would be a realistic 5-7 year goal. UConn was 1-AA only 8 or 9 years ago, playing in a band box. Now they're one of the better BE programs. You also sell Zips hoops short. There's no reason FSU should ever lose to a MAC team sheerly due to low motivation. They may not have been overly motivated...but the Zips were pretty good too. We backed it up with a solid run at NIT runner up UMass. Lack of a healthy PG was our "degree of separation" last season. Nothing else.No doubt the Zips have some work to do to prove their worthy of hoops recognition like the Butler's, upper-tier MVC schools and Gonzaga's of the world. But those schools didn't win overnight. Hey -- we lost to K.e.n.t. 3 times last year. We have work to do. But people was to plant a tree on Monday and begin eating fruit on Tuesday. It doesn't work that way.The hoops program is on the cusp of a "special" 5+ year run. Not the "nice," confetti-free, 20+ win seasons we've seen for the past 5 years, but real, confetti-dropping MAC tourneys with some NCAA tourney wins. Like everyone else, I wish it happened a few years sooner...but once the confetti hits the floor I'll forget all about it.
  2. Noon EST. If you're going to the game, get ready for an 11am CST kick off.
  3. I'm guessing they won't. At least, if they're smart, they won't. $30.00 to get into every Zips sporting even is a great deal, but we're going to need to pay off 30million dollars worth of stadium. You don't do that with $1.00 tickets. It will be interesting to see how UA walks the tightrope between getting a fair ticket price, and angering people who've gotten used to paying virtually nothing for football tickets for decades.I have some cheap-ass friends. They've rarely, if ever bought tickets to a Zips game. Why do it, if you can walk up to the gate and people are handing freebies out by the fist-full? The Family ticket plans they offer are pretty good. I think a lot of people will go that route. If I were AD? I'd make kids pay for the "big games" (ie. the season opener and K.e.n.t), and let the Kids Club apply only to the less-attractive, late-season games.
  4. It presently resides in the reception area of the coach's offices.Another squandered marketing opportunity I don't think so. There are hundreds of recruits who pass through those offices within the year between K.e.n.t. games (many on facility tours held during camps @ Stiles). Many of those kids are considering MAC schools...often UA and K.e.n.t. It is a nice first Zips impression when they walk into the room.Furthermore, the coaches and players actually won the thing*...and they should be able to enjoy it on a daily basis. It is also a good off-season incentive...you don't want to be responsible for a bare office wall come October 5th 2008.* Yes, it could also be argued that bumbling, hapless choke-riddled K.e.n.t. "gave" it to us in 2007
  5. My son will be the happiest kid in Summit County to hear this news!He just asked me the other day if I thought we'd still see him at some Zips' games this upcoming season.
  6. Sorry, its real paint on wood. But a C-USA logo could be painted on top of it easily!I think this has been discussed about a hundred times or more on this board, but I think the general opinion is that the only worthwhile conference for UA to join would be the Big East. CUSA is more of a lateral move with much higher travel costs for away events.I think C-USA would be a good move if the ultimate goal is to be in the BE. I don't see the BE accepting a MAC school, but I DO see the BE accepting a C-USA school.AD's get paid the big bucks to see 5-10 years into the future. Will the BE implode? Split? Will Memphis leave C-USA soon? That all would play into the Zips decision to leave the MAC.
  7. Wonder if the Beacon will ever get around to writing a story like this?
  8. It presently resides in the reception area of the coach's offices.
  9. I doubt Scout.com people would like it if ZipsNation moderators went on the Scout message board and tried to direct traffic to our site. Likewise, ZipsNation is not designed a a free advertising venue for Scout.com, or any other "pay" site for that matter. Please -- No advertising on our site. Direct, or "indirect." No linking to "pay" information. Likewise -- I hope no one here would copy such information from a pay site and post it here.I think that's fair.
  10. I saw that, like the MAC, the Plasma Center recently changed their logo in anticipation of an eminent domain action?
  11. how?i see stuff like this all the time whenever they come out with a new label and wonder how they come up with such good sounding bs. i mean how does that mark reference anything to community or academics or whatever?I agree. Wouldn't it be refreshing to hear Mack say "Jesus H...that stupid logo search was about the biggest waste of time ever. I'm overseeing a Division 1 athletics department at a 24,000 student university and Rick Chryst wants me to help select a freaking LOGO? COME ON! Don't we have bigger things to worry about in the MAC? How good will that logo look on TV? Who knows...no one watches ESPNU. Nice TV contract, Rick. And don't even get me started with the hell my life's become trying to schedule football games in a 13 team conference. The new mark is a simple shield. It is a rip-off of a Euro soccer logo...but since the UA soccer program is one of the few MAC programs that competes on a high, national level, maybe it is appropriate? Anyone who reads into this logo re-hash any deeper than face value is REALLY grasping for straws. No outta my way, I gotta write a 3 million dollar check for a flea bag hotel and a parking lot. No further questions."
  12. Fixed. Sorry about that.
  13. Zips Offer 1st, but Others Follow
  14. Back in South Bend
  15. As a fan, the most frustrating thing about Jarvis is we wouldn't offer him a scholarship up front...but did give scholarships to about 13 kids in that Zips recruiting class that couldn't even last 2 semesters in college.Water under the bridge...we're 2-1 against Jarvis, right?
  16. Hey...I thought this was a "profanity free" blog.... Vacation...vacation...what the heck is that. Oh.wait..once, while at "band camp"...(in my best American Pie voice)..ooppss...my bad wrong kid. Uhm..well...last year I went to Myrtle Beach (watched 8 games, sat at the beach 2x--does that count) Geez..is this a "trick question"????That's kinda what I thought.
  17. Just out of curiosity -- Does it ever get old logging all these hours in AAU tourneys and far-away camps? Do you ever get a summer week free to hit the beach or unwind? Or are the hoops trips your "vacations?"
  18. I'm always a sucker for a good "separated at birth." I think ZW scores an 8.9 on a scale of 1-10 with that one! :bow:Try this one on for size:If anyone is concerned about Zeke gaining weight, they're crazy. With these Food Network stars, we'll be lucky to keep him under 350 bills by the time he graduates.
  19. Hopefully he can make OU an NIT-caliber team, like he did w/OSU last year?
  20. Click for Entire InterviewChalk Board Quotation:PP: Last season started well with a win at Iowa State and then the wheels fell off. What needs to change in 2008 for this team to be successful?EJ: “We’ve gotta’ win our rivalry game against Akron. I think that game will set the tone for the season. We should have won the game last year and we didn’t. We bounced back and beat a good Ohio team, and showed glimpses of the team that we could be but we didn’t carry that through the whole season. I think starting the season off we need to stay strong, stay together, and not make the same mistakes that we did last year. We can build off of last season, and try not to make the same mistakes twice.”
  21. Zips recruit Marvase Byrd shows f.lashes of brilliance before Mother Nature prematurely ends the East-West All Star game (WPa).
  22. 6' 9" former UA center Marco Morgan is apparently playing some level of professional basketball in the Great White North?
