MAC football schedule released
Captain Kangaroo replied to ZachTheZip's topic in Akron Zips Football
on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the highest, I'd give this schedule a 6.Dropping Kentucky had to happen. Sucks, but that's what you get when you have 3 athletic directors in 8 years, and you're scheduling several years in advance.@ Wisconsin is a nice "money" game. Although, like the OSU game, I'm sure is pays us a fraction of the going rate.@ Syracuse is a winnable game...if we are a decent team. 5 hour road trip is very manageable.Home - Ball State is great. Nate Davis is a lot of fun to watch. @ Army is a very winnable game. The weather in upstate New York in mid-September should be perfect for football. I'm really looking forward to that one.Home - Cincinnati -- Great home game. Zips need to take care of business and beat the Bearcats. It is a HUGE game to get a BCS school at home. We can't blow it.@ K.e.n.t -- October 4th should be great weather. 7 mile drive to the K.e.n.t. tailgate lot for me. Home BG -- Wow...four of our first seven games are within 10 miles of campus! Tough match up...BG's spread offense destroyed us last season.@ EMU - Everyone says how nice their stadium is. Maybe I'll finally check it out. Nice to have a "soft" MAC West opponent.2 bye weeks? Bizarre. Ridiculous. Home - Toledo -- Wednesday night game again wreaks havoc on tailgating. The schedule says "ESPN2 or ESPNU." Gee...let me guess which one it will end up being. Home - Buffalo - 100% definitely the final game at the Rubber Bowl. This is my "Zipmeister/Wisconsin Lock of the Year!" No way in hell the stadium is a week or two away from completion on opening day. If it is, what a total embarasment it would be for Mack Roades and UA. I don't see Mack letting that ostrich-sized egg drip down his face. IC Field opens on schedule, and I'm drinking IC Light in the parking lot.@ OU -- Man, we suck in Athens. Of course, no TV.@ Temple -- Not ditching the family for Thanksgiving weekend. The Zips will need to win that one without me. Why play a Friday game if there's no TV? Stupid.MAC Championship -- With no Miami on the schedule, JD should be expected to be there. -
What does it say about Akron Basketball if....
Captain Kangaroo replied to Big Zip's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
1.) Define "quite a few." If, over the couse of two decades, 5 is "quite a few," then I guess you are correct.2.) Huggins followed up the 20-win NCAA appearance with two NIT's. And, Dambrot has an NIT bid too. The only "snub" we've had in the past 20 years was last season (NIT). -
I wish it were because he scored 22ppg and hauled in 8.9 rebounds per night.

If J-Wood can go off for 23 again while they "key" on him, I'm all for it.Apparently 23 points from Wood is not enough for us to win. If the opponent keeps him under 30 they have a good chance to beat us.If Wood would make even 50% of his shots from 2-feet-and-in, he would score 30. He's been terrible from point-blank range since he's returned. He needs to pick it up if we're to have any chance in Cleveland.

1.) "Captain's Choice?" I'm suing Elton Alexander for copyright infringement2.) Interesting to see Nate Linhart listed as such a late-game threat3.) How can Politz be a tourney MVP when he won't get out of the second round. Switch him and Wood.4.) Shocker that no Akron women made the list...for the 99th straight year.

That's what I got out of it too. Seemed pretty clear? It is a smart move on UA's part. Wisconsin, Syracuse, Kentucky and Army road games to start the season would be grossly unfair to JD and the team. Sandwich a home game with Cincinnati in there...what was someone smoking when they came up with that schedule?

Reminds me of a story I once read...

K.e.n.t. Football Arrests
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Football
Just saw that K.e.n.t. alum and present day Steeler James Harrison got arrested yesterday too. Nice job. -
Found on the Rasor Blog: K.e.n.t. being K.e.n.t.

If the Zips lose to K.e.n.t., and you didn't eat any lasagna....well...I just hope you can live with yourself. Here you go, Z-P. No excuses! * 9 lasagna noodles * 1 tablespoon olive oil * 1 pound ground beef * 1 pound bulk Italian sausage * 1 (16 ounce) can sliced mushrooms, drained * 1 teaspoon garlic salt * 1 teaspoon dried oregano * 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme * 1/4 teaspoon dried basil * 4 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce * salt and pepper to taste * 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese * 3 eggs, beaten * 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese * 1 pound shredded mozzarella cheeseDIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 2. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the lasagna noodles and olive oil; cook until al dente, 8 to 10 minutes; drain. 3. Cook the ground beef and sausage in a large pot over medium heat; drain. Stir in the mushrooms, garlic salt, oregano, thyme, basil, and tomato sauce. Season with salt and pepper; simmer 30 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, mix together the ricotta cheese, eggs, and Parmesan cheese in a bowl. 5. Ladle enough of the meat sauce into a 9x13 inch baking dish to cover the bottom in a thin layer. Form a layer atop the sauce with 3 of the lasagna noodles. Spread about 1/4 of the ricotta cheese mixture over the noodles. Sprinkle about 1/3 of the mozzarella cheese over the ricotta cheese mixture and then ladle about 1/3 of the meat sauce over the mozzarella cheese. Repeat layering twice more, topping with the remaining 1/4 pound of mozzarella cheese. 6. Bake in preheated oven 90 minutes. Allow to sit 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

I think the MAC should eschew all but one conference game per year, each team's "Rivalry" game, for three years. MAC schools should play BCS schools on the road for 11 games. Say you average $650,000 per game...that's 7.15million dollars per MAC school, plus the guaranteed sell out of the rivalry game. Three years of that and everyone's football budget is covered for the next decade. Lots of TV exposure....revenue...how can you go wrong? The MAC coaches would select which teams should play in the MAC championship. Probably 3-9 Western Michigan vs. 4-8 Akron?

If you need a ticket, just hang out in front of the JAR doors and ask "Anyone have an extra ticket?" I guarantee you'll have one...most likely for free...within 3 minutes.Note: The scalpers will try to get the tickets before you, so stay away from them. "Work" an area away from the scalpers. And DO NOT buy a ticket from a scalper at the JAR. Unless you just have a ton of money to burn...then it is your call.CK's "Get into any game for free" tip of the day.

I've been mulling over the Zips improbable road win against OU, searching for the key to how we pulled off an 80 point performance, shooting 60% from the field in a win against the MAC's best defensive team…a team with a 12-game home winning streak. I think I have found it.On the Zips journey south, they made a detour to the McKnight's house. There they all consumed Mrs. McKnight's famous lasagna.Note: Actress portrayal of Mrs. McKnight, in her kitchen, with a recently-baked lasagna.Carbing-out, the Zips team was able to withstand, and overcome what OU coach Tim O'Shea called the Bobcat's "best effort."Do you think it is coincidence that the Zips coaches luncheon is being held at The Spaghetti Warehouse? With lasagna featured at their Endless Pasta Bar? I THINK NOT!What is this mystical "Power of Pasta?" Hey, I flunked Calculus 1 twice, so don't ask me. All I know is the stuff is starch-laden dynamite. Would a spinach lasagna give the Zips the edge necessary to dominate K.e.n.t and sweep through the MAC tourney? I think…YES!I call on the entire ZipsNation to begin a lasagna binge prior to the Akron/K.e.n.t. game this Sunday! I got my ricotta, ground beef, noodles, onions, peppers and sauce last night. AND Mrs. McKnight's secret ingredient…pepperoni. If you aren't a cook, get some frozen stuff and 'nuke it. It's all good!Together we can eat our way to the MAC championship!! Who's with me?!

ARE YOU FEELIN' DA ZIPMAN??!!
-
Odd...bizarre...Tarver...

If you dish out the smack, you need to be able to take it too. Dials is subjected to some really harsh stuff stuff from opponent's student sections. Stuff WAY worse than making an "O" with your hands. To OU Fans' credit, no one bitched about Dials' post-game moves. It is all part of the game.To give you an idea regarding what the Zips are subjected to in Oxford, click on this thread from Bobcatattack.com. Scroll all the way to the bottom. When you see stuff like that in the stands, you sometimes feel the urge to make an "O" at game's end. If you dish out the smack, you need to be able to take it too.

Dambrot to Speak at the Coach's Luncheon
Captain Kangaroo replied to Captain Kangaroo's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Just bringing it to the top in case someone missed it. -
The Z-Fund is sponsoring an afternoon of food, fun and fellowship at the Coaches Luncheon this Thursday, March 6th from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Spaghetti Warehouse. The luncheon will feature Men’s Basketball Head Coach Keith Dambrot, New Women’s Soccer Head Coach Chris Pfau, and New Volleyball Head Coach Ron Arenz. Cost is $11 at the door and includes a pasta buffet and drink. To reserve your seat call the Z-Fund at 330-972-FUND. The Spaghetti Warehouse is located at 510 South Main Street in Akron. I hear the last luncheon was near sell-out, so I'd recommend making a reservation soon!

Zips skip McDonald's, and instead opt for Mc Knight's.
-
Per my original post on Nik's commitment the Zips were originally recruiting a VES kid named Brian Irwin (name spelling may be wrong) who ended up committing to Temple in 2007 (not this year). Jeff Boals mentioned Irwin's Temple commitment on one of Joe Dunn's radio shows a couple months ago.

Why get out of the MAC? We win the league and get an automatic bid every 4 out of 5 years. We can schedule a home/home series with just about any BCS school. Be to MAC soccer what Memphis is to C-USA basketball, and enjoy it.
